Yep to all nationalities, why is it that First Canadian's are turning it into a business plan?

Because the timing is right. I mean hell, I can trace my DNA back to the Iberian Celts. So who do I sue for the destruction of my people and its culture?

Oh believe me, it is taught in public school!! I have several kids in grade school and can confirm that a disproportionately large portion of the curriculum of the social studies class from grade 5 up is devoted to residential schools, ensuring that "colonial" guilt is firmly instilled in the kids, and beating the mantra ad-nauseum into their heads that reparation sand compensation must be made.

Every morning before classes start, the announcements over the PA include the school principal and students declaring their thanks and respect to the Treaty Land in which the school sits. The Residential School theme is everywhere in the school, in the class assignments, in posters hanging on the hallway walls, in the homework...everywhere. The local elementary school just spent 40 grand to bulldoze a portion of the school parking lot and created a "Sacred Heart garden" to commemorate the victims of residential schools.

Believe me, the kids are completely immersed the Residential School issue, it saturates virtually everything they do in school.

Kids are better able to understand the issue.

Once they become adults they have been programmed to reject it.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, please allow me to play the Devil's advocate by re-wording your above text:

'The founding of Canada is a part of our history as a nation. What happened should be taught in public school to educate the next generation. Understanding the mistakes of our ancestors will better equip us not to repeat them. A national holiday like Canada Day is a stupid idea and really a cop out. A band aid from the Pander Bear. It's like throwing money at an issue without trying to understand or correct it. We have been doing that for far too long.'

Or this:

'The end of WWI is a part of our history as a nation. What happened should be taught in public school to educate the next generation. Understanding the mistakes of our ancestors will better equip us not to repeat them. remembrance Day is a stupid idea and really a cop out. A band aid from the Pander Bear. It's like throwing money at an issue without trying to understand or correct it. We have been doing that for far too long.'

I'm sure we could say the same about Christmas, Easter, or any other holiday, no?

How about we include a wider array of facts.

We've all heard of the use of small pox infested blankets, but have you ever heard about HBC innoculating FNs to prevent their demise?

So is it right to punish today's society for sins of the past? By the way I'm Ukrainian a descendent of a true genocide in the Holdomor to be persecuted in the new world for being of Eastern European descent, to top it off forced adopted from my unwed mother of 15 in the 60's so who should I sue? There are multiple avenues open to me

I believe some of your countrymen were also interred during the first Great War and used as labor for the development of Jasper .

Kids are much more malleable and moldable, for sure. Much easier to brainwash, especially when parents aren't watching what's going on. I certainly wouldn't call that understanding the issue, in fact it's their lack of understanding that makes them malleable.

Most adults have the ability to analyze facts and accept or reject what they choose to feel guilt and remorse over...although this inherent ability seems to be getting increasingly rare with successive generations, perhaps because of what's happening when they're kids.

We do need to teach kids logical reasoning skills for sure.

As for me, no, I don't feel guilty for things I'm personally not responsible for. That said, I can recognize how the Official Languages Act benefits me unfairly and so support reducing the official statuses of English and French at least somewhat to reduce that unfair advantage. I feel similarly about statutory holidays. Why not let a person choose from a wide list of stat holidays? Same with the separate school system. Why not scrap it or apply it to all religious schools.

None of that has to do with the past but rather with present-day policy. I don't feel guilty because I don't defend these privileges.

Calling someone racist because they disagree with you is the nuclear option. Basically, your ideas have been overrun, you don't have an argument left in your arsenal, but you have the coveted R Bomb.

The nature of Canada in the late 1800s was such that our primary ruling class was predominantly British and most institutions were set up copying the English model . Now in the early 2000s all Canadianís are held captive to British mistakes . My Irish ancestors didnít steal any land , they worked under horrible conditions for the stealers. My Japanese wifeís ancestors had their property confiscated and got interred inland . All the displaced Europeans that immigrated to Canada after the second Great War , all of us our being made to apologize and compensate for something in which we had no part .

The Holdomor was the first then Hitler came along with attempt number two only 10 years later.

Had the Soviets not disarmed Ukrainians, Hitler would have never made it to Lviv.

My Jacobite ancestors were "cleared" from Blair Atholl (right beside Balmoral Castle). I want the Queen to pay us rent.

My Welsh and Cornish ancestors were enslaved by the Romans for four hundred years. I DEMAND compensation from the Italian government.

To some degree, that's why I oppose group compensation, only individual compensation on a case by case basis to be determined by a judge.

That said, there are cost-effective ways to commemorate the residential school system. For example, make a reconciliation day a state holiday that closes government offices for a day but does not touch the private sector.

Like the Canada flag act, encourage property managers to allow tenants to fly indigenous flags if they want to.

Reduce the official statuses of English and French so as to make it easier for an indigenous Canadian to access at least lower and middle level positions in the Federal government. This would not cost anything and might even save money by eliminating the need for English services in Quebec and French elsewhere except in the highest-level positions.

There are plenty of cost-effective ways to honour them that do not need to cost the bank.

Allow private for-profit hospitals to operate on reserves. That way a person could get treatment there rather than in Cuba.

Maybe exempt on-reserve business from tariff restrictions. We just need to think outside the box.

Or maybe the Vikings for raiding and setting Kiev for trading after killing and raping the locals, or Turkey for Genghis Khan and later the Golden Horde for murdering and slaving the country for decades, Maybe the Swiss, Poland, Austria, Hungary for invading and killing, enslaving the populace, etc. many options

But nothing as a bad as the socialists in the Bolshevic revolution, maybe sue Antifa for the sins of the past

So instead of suing the Government, maybe they should sue the political parties and their successor parties.

Nailed it. There is one very important skill we learned as kids because we interacted with our environment and were allowed to do so without being bubble-wrapped and helicoptered and it's called 'risk assessment'. This is a basic skill which cannot simply be "taught". Risk assessment skills are also one of the building blocks for critical thinking skills. Something that doesn't seem to be encouraged in school anymore. And it's no surprise. People who are both educated and have critical thinking skills aren't easily manipulated as adults. And that's the LAST thing the ALT-left wants, educated people who can think for themselves.

I think you have that backwards, it is the 'adults' who swallow the news 'hook, line and sinker' without asking any questions let alone asking many and demanding they be answered.
Now we are going to blame the kids for not 'resisting', while the parents stand by and watch? About the right speed for adults these days. More truthfully, they own little micro worlds has no room for teaching kids anything (besides being too stupid), that is why schools were invented Right?

How about Tecumseh Day? Not as an obligatory stat mind you. Maybe add it to a list of national state holidays from which a person could choose a maximum number of personal stats in consultation with his employer, but Tecumseh day could be added to that list of options to choose from.

We could have him push some manikins dressed up in First Nations garb off a cliff and then sip champagne while speaking in some foreign tongue.

Walnut seems to come from a history that is used to slaughtering anybody deemed to be inferior to 'them', no hope until God squeezes him like a pimple and all the evil comes shooting out. Stand back, far back.

How about "think about stuff day"?

You get to choose who and what you personally feel like celebrating or memorializing.

Why not? But again, make it an optional one to pick from among the allotted personal days allowed.
