A woman’s eye was a hive of activity after doctors found four tiny sweat bees living inside of it.
A 29-year-old woman from Taiwan had recently admitted herself to hospital after one of her eyes swelled up.
The woman — simply identified as Ms. He — expected treatment for a simple infection, but doctors who examined her found four bees living under her eyelid. The insects had apparently been living off of her tears.
According to The Guardian, medical officials at Fooyin University Hospital in Donggang Township, managed to remove the four bees from He’s tear duct.
“I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging their bodies,” said Dr. Hung Chi-Ting, the head of the hospital’s ophthalmology department.

Chinese media outlet Kansas Entomological Society, sweat bees are attracted to sweat and will sometimes land on people to drink the liquid due to the high protein content.
The doctor added that He could have gone blind if she had decided to rub her eye while the bees were still inside.
“She was wearing contact lenses so she didn’t dare to rub her eyes in case she broke the lens. If she did she could have induced the bees to produce venom … she could have gone blind,” Hong said, as reported by BBC.
“They were still alive,” Hung said of the bees, noting the insects have been sent away for further inspection.
