The Western churches are observing the Epiphany, today ... You know, when the Three Wise-guys turned up with Goldberg, Frankenstein and Myrna.

Children as young as five are encouraged to SMOKE in centuries-old Portuguese tradition as Epiphany celebrations kick off around the world

Epiphany celebrations were in full swing around the world as people came out in their droves to mark the Christian festival. There were events held to mark the day all over the globe, with traditional celebrations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The most striking tradition was in the village of Vale de Salgueiro in Portugal, which allows children as young as five to smoke cigarettes during Epiphany celebrations (top left). There were also Epiphany celebrations in Australia (bottom left) and Christmas celebrations in Ethiopia (top right) and Russia (bottom right) by Orthodox Christian groups who follow the Julian calendar.

The Canadian military used to use julian dates for inspection cycles and so on. Every year starts at day one and simply counts up, therefore if you want a filter changed every 180 days you use the julian dates and change it at 180, instead of trying to figure out what day of they year might be 180 by on our calendar.
