Uber Self-Driving Vehicle Hits, Kills Pedestrian 0:57
TEMPE, Ariz. — Uber says it has suspended all of its self-driving vehicle testing, including operations in Toronto, following a fatal pedestrian collision involving a vehicle in Arizona.
In addition to Toronto, self-driving vehicle testing has been taking place in Phoenix, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

Police in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe said Monday the vehicle was in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel when a woman walking outside of a crosswalk was hit.
Sgt. Ronald Elcock says in an email that the accident happened overnight but did not say whether it occurred Sunday night or Monday morning.
Uber says on Twitter that it is “fully co-operating” with the investigation and expressed condolences to the family of the victim.
The company started testing its vehicles on Toronto streets last year. The vehicles do not operate on Uber’s ride-hailing service.

Have yet to find out what the insurance requirements are for these self drivers.

Can I get one for my teen age kid and avoid paying the huge premiums for new drivers?

TEMPE, Ariz. — Authorities investigating a deadly self-driving vehicle crash in suburban Phoenix have released video of the Uber SUV striking a pedestrian as she walked her bicycle across a darkened street.
The video released Wednesday by Tempe police shows 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg walking onto the roadway from a darkened area and stopping the moment before she was struck.
The SUV’s lights didn’t illuminate the woman until a second or two before impact, raising questions about whether the vehicle could have stopped in time.
The footage also shows the backup driver in the SUV looking downward for several seconds before the crash. The driver looked up and appeared startled during the last moment of the clip.
The crash Sunday night in Tempe was the first death involving a fully autonomous test vehicle.

I can see why the driver was not paying attention, after all the vehicle is supposed to drive itself. Which brings up the question of impaired driving. If you sit behind the wheel of an automous(sp?) vehicle drunk can you be charged with impaired driving? Or how about crawling into the back seat and let the car take you home?
