personal baggage

I've read that posters are not allowed to post stuff that is of a personal nature.

Below are the forum rules.... where does it say that? Seems pretty arbitrary and petty. Yes, I am breaking Rule #5 but if it ain't actually written in the rules that we all abide by, then how are we to know what is allowed. The arbitrariness is bothersome. If arbitrariness isn't a word, well too bad. It is now.

Forum Rules

Revised 26.04.07
General Overview
This document lays out the rules users of the discussion forums at www.canadiancontent.net are expected to abide by. References to “we,” “us,” and “our” in what follows refers to moderators and/or administrators of this site. The rules laid out on this page compliment our disclaimer of warranties and terms of service. Under no circumstances should these user guidelines void any clauses in the terms of service.

By using this service you agree:

1. To maintain only one account. Secondary accounts are prohibited unless prior approval is granted by an administrator;

2. Not to post any material that you know, or in our judgement ought to know, is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, threatening, invasive of personal privacy, or in violation of Canadian law;

3. Not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you, except for brief credited excerpts to illustrate a point;

4. To abide by our wishes in interpreting and enforcing these rules;

5. Not to debate moderator decisions on the board. Public posts debating these rules and/or moderators' enforcement of such, will be removed without comment. We encourage feedback however and invite you to pm a moderator or administrator if you have any questions or concerns.;

6. You will not post what is commonly called spam, which includes but is not limited to such things as advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, solicitations, or promoting a particular cause or organization. Exceptions may be granted for worthy (in our sole opinion) causes if you obtain prior permission from us;

7. Not to use our medium as a manner to promote personal forums, personal websites and/or any personal commercial interests without prior approval from an administrator. This includes promoting through links in areas such as profiles, signatures, forums, reputation system and through private messaging.

8. Links to personal websites such as personal blogs, articles and biographies are allowed at anytime (providing they are suitable) if they are not of a commercial nature and/or do not promote/host a forum. If they don't conform as such, you must have at least 500 posts at CanadianContent and you must receive prior approval from an administrator. Such promotion is limited to the Website forum area and profiles. Advertising in signatures is not acceptable regardless of the number of posts;

9. We reserve the right to ban any user temporarily or permanently, refuse posting from screen names we find offensive, edit or delete any post, limit postings on any topic, and shut down any topic altogether, for any reason, or no reason, without explanation or warning.

10. Not to post on behalf of any banned member in any public manner. This includes all forums, private messages, and signatures;

11. You are solely responsible for the content of your messages. We cannot verify content and thus accept no responsibility for it, nor do we vouch for the accuracy, completeness, or utility, of any message or the qualifications of any user;

12. Not to post links to pornography. We will be the sole judge of what constitutes pornography. Links to potentially shocking or offensive material are acceptable in the context of a mature discussion, but do not link directly to the item. Issue a warning in your message and link to an intermediate page that links to the item you wish to bring to other users attention. If you are in doubt about the appropriateness of a link, contact us before posting;

13. Not to evade disciplinary measures. If you have been suspended or banned and insist on coming back under a different user name or different ISP, you will be banned again. If this behaviour is repeated, Canadian Content may contact your service provider;
14. Not to post private messages at Canadian Content or elsewhere without the express permission of the sender of the Private Message;

15. Not to engage in internet stalking. This includes, but is not limited to, following a Canadian Content member from site to site, or from thread to thread within this site; taking posts from Canadian Content in order to attack a poster at another site; and attempting to defame or discredit Canadian Content members or staff on other sites for views they may have expressed at Canadian Content.

16. Not to start multiple threads on the same topic. At the discretion of the moderators new threads on the same or similar topic, particularly those appearing concurrently in the recent topic list, may be moved, merged, deleted or locked.

17. Revisions or additions to the rules may occur only at administration discretion.
Conclusion

This site is intended to be a medium for public discussion. You are free to express your views forcefully but we require you to remain civil. Insults, hate speech, and deliberately inflammatory statements, commonly known as trolling, are not acceptable. Do not threaten anyone or any group or suggest they are deserving of harm.

Basic common sense rule: Act civilised. If a disagreement arises, we will be the sole judge of what constitutes being a civilised person or a headache to the forum staff.

Personal stuff is fine. Encouraged even. We are a community here. But mature adults know the difference between self disclosure and details that are overly intimate.

I'd also like to point out that no posts were deleted from the thread that started the issue. A suggestion was merely made for future posting.

Having a difference of opinion on what one chooses to post on an internet forum does not make one side (your's) "mature" and the other side (by inference) "immature". I don't think there is any need for insults.... especially since it breaks your Rule #2.

... was what prompted a concerned PM. The whole situation has been blown very much out of proportion Joe.

Are you calling Triedit an immature adult here?
Seems to me that something that should be a quiet pm that could result in a slight edit of the postings is blown up in public confrontations and pissing contest.

Only if you cook us up some hamburgers and play some poker with us, Twila.

A little beer wouldn't hurt either.

It was Thursday, so it was my day off. However, I am free this evening.

I can't believe I said that! Crap, hope I don't find myself "red-ified".

I can't adequately explain things without posting what was sent to me via PM. The short version is that I was told that posting personal stuff to the "degree" that I did was inappropriate. That word was used. I was also told that members had contacted mods via pm and email and expressed discomfort. I was told that soliciting personal advice is inappropriate at CC.

I do understand that my safety and that of my family was the primary concern. I appreciate that but feel that I should have the right to choose my own level of safety.

I was told that discussing this on the board was inappropriate. A thread was deleted. While I respect that I was probably seen as challenging a mod decision that was not really my intent. My intent was to give voice to the rest of the members regarding the censorship issue. I feel things should be dealt with openly and when it potentially affects all members it should not be hidden from members.

I was put on "moderation que"--or more correctly told that If I didnt stop posting about this issue I would be put in the que--meaning mods had to approve my post before it went to the board. I have an issue with this because I feel strongly that this is an issue we need to deal with as a group, not hide it in pm's. I don't like talking behind people's backs. I have never stated which mod this discussion was with, so felt that I had appropriately addressed it as a group issue, not a personal one.

I appreciate that speaking of my frustrations and reactions as a parent (and a GOOD parent I might add) might be uncomfortable for some. But I do not feel that it was inappropriate. Nor do I feel that posting about the issue with my husband's friend was inappropriate. Supposedly this is a friendly place. When faced with enormous issues I think it is completely appropriate to vent these things to friends, regardless of it being on the web. If I am not uncomforable with the public view, that should be my issue, not that of a moderator.

All of this has been discussed with the mod. Our opinions are not in harmony and since I am just a member, my opinion loses. I accept that.

So I asked for help finding a forum that was more appropriate for someone comfortable with sharing intimate things with friends. I specifically asked that such referrals be done via PM.

That thread was removed.

Now Im at a loss over what to do. I want the freedom to express my thoughts and feelings in a way I see fit so long as it harms none. I can't have that here. I'm not permitted to ask my friends for recommendations. Im not permitted to openly discuss this issue with people who might someday be faced with the same. People I care about and trust.

And in the process have been labelled immature and needing attention.

It would seem to me that if a mod had an issue they would simply just talk to me, person to person, and resolve it. If it truly was a legal issue (I was told that Andem could have to provide assistance to the police because I admitted to doing something criminal) then that could have been discussed, but it wouldn't have gone over well with me given that having sex with animals, suicide, and smoking illegal drugs is talked openly about. Those are also illegal but the mods don't have an issue with that.

So yes, Im trying hard to calm down and be rational, but I think I have been treated inappropriately and that the members here have a right to know what has transpired. I expect to be treated fairly. I expect to find out that every post about animal sex and illegal drugs will illicit warnings via pm from mods.

Im willing to bet that isn't happening.

Im through with this now. Ive said my piece. I don't know if I will stay, to be honest. I like so many of the folks here. But I won't be party to double standards and I won't withhold posts I feel necessary just because it might make someone uncomfortable. Ive still got some more thinking to do on the subject.
