What will be the policy discussions of the next federal election?

I think the following will probably figure highly on the list of policy debates in the next federal election:

1. The federal debt.

2. Trade.

3. The position of the Attorney General (for example, whether we should separate it from the position of the Minister of Justice).

4. Immigration policy.

I'm sure there will be others, but I think the above will certainly rank at least among the top ten let's say.

Agree on the debt and trade.

For AG that's not as high a concern for me (though I do agree that perhaps it should be separate from MoJ) as Immigration.

Climate change is serious and getting more so (whether you believe it or not).

Jobs is always an issue.

Personally I'd love to see a Government that'll take Canadian oil and develop it here, for our own use, THEN sell it off.

I'd also like to see more push into better/cleaner energy practices though.

They already do, Just not as much by you do to the Energy East project being rejected by Quebec. There is an international agreement against shipping finished product over the border signed since before NAFTA 1.0, special circumstances for bulkers to carry finished product over the border.

And yet most of our oil apparently goes to the US?

The oil meant for here would go to SA?

Why should oil be shipped all the way to Saint John, why not build out west more to refine, and make it less likely to be a disastrous spill of something happens? Considering the explosion and recent fire at the refinery, IMO I sometimes wonder if Irving isn't falling behind in tech to keep things safe. Last we need is oil spilled into the eastern ocean.

We already refine our oil for 100% of our fuel needs from Central and Northern BC to Northern Ont. and available up to Montreal, Selling the excess to the US. Southern Ont. and Quebec I believe refine 40-60% of Western oil for fuel, East coast (out by you) imports all the Oil that Hibernia can't produce. The pipeline would make Canadian oil available for 100% refined fuels and sell the excess to the European market.

If TCPL is able to convert Line 2 to Oil (Energy East) refined products (which runs through Northern Ont.) might be sent out through it connecting West to East. As of right now all Enbridge line cross the US border to connect to Southern Ont. refined product cannot cross the border even if it is coming back to Canada.

I don't think she realizes we have more than enough upgraders and refineries in Canada to handle all our needs, same as the US. Canada and the US can't sell bulk fuel across the border unless it is a special type not available in one of the countries.

POOR SERRYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

She wants Cdn govt interference in the Cdn oil industry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

By making that statement she demonstrates HOW LITTLE KNOWLEDGE she has of either Cdn history or economics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly she KNOWS NOTHING of the ugly history of govt owned Petro Canada or the Pierre Trudeau National Energy Policy!!!!!!!!!!

AS for Our idiot Boy Justin -he has all pipelines right where he wants them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IN LEGAL LIMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

There will be NO ACTION on pipelines or oil industry problems TILL AFTER the 2019 election!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

If LIE-berals win then Our idiot Boy will use his new mandate to KILL THE CDN OIL PATCH COMPLETELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As he has told us he wants to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

If Our idiot Boy and his loser LIE-berals are defeated in October -then the new govt will push aside LIE-beral STALLING TACTICS and proceed with construction of oil pipelines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for govt getting involved in any way with oil production - Petro Canada has shown us how it is done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The UGLY DETAILS are set out below::::::::

Recently a Lie-beral claimed that Harper and Conservatives sold off Petro Canada-as if the crown corporation was actually USEFUL in some fashion to Cdns and this is a truly spectacular re-writing of history! Petro Canada was created in 1975 by Lie-beral prime minister (and closet communist) Pierre Trudeau. Petro Canada was a TYPICAL Lie-beral creation-a crown corporation sucking up massive amounts of tax money and consistently failing to show a profit in spite of preferential treatment by govt. The special govt aid included FREE access to assorted oil fields on crown land around the country-access which any private oil company would have to bid on and PAY for-and yet private companies out performed the crown corporation civil service Hogs at every turn in spite of govt aid to Petro Canada RIPOFF!

Petro Canada also bought out the small privately owned experimental tar sands project in west Alberta and expanded it massively. As the price of oil soared, other companies joined Petro Canada in exploiting the tar sands. So when our current prime minister the Boy with nice hair-for Brains speaks of shutting down the tar sands he is telling us he wants to DESTROY the energy policy CREATED BY his father the odious Pierre Trudope-our vicious PET!

By 1990, with Petro Canada STILL sucking up masses of tax dollars to keep afloat-and no real hope of ever making the govt employed Petro Hogs actually PAY their way; and with many private companies producing good profits in Alberta oil fields and making Petro Canada look STUPID; and with the Conservative govt of Brian Mulroney facing a recession, it was decided to cut the MANY losses of govt and sell off Petro Canada-it was NOTHING to do with Harper!! Lie-berals miss no opportunity to lie about Harper and like good socialists, they are quite willing to re-write history-just look at the crap they spout about Harper! Socialists believe their `good will` makes them infallible and any socialist plan that goes wrong must therefore have been sabotaged by their enemies and so Socialists believe they are ENTITLED to re-write history as they please!

Some Lie-berals may jump on this information and ask what is the difference between selling Petro Canada and selling Ontari-owe Hydro? The difference is this: There were and are many companies producing oil and oil prices do fluctuate up and down from time to time-competition between oil companies is not high...but there IS Some. Compare that to your electric bill-and I ASK-when was the last time the price of electricity EVER FELL? In your LIFETIME????

Further, oil is NOT something we need every day. We can walk or bicycle to work-in fact Lie-berals would like to ORDER us to do this! Loonie leftists and Lie-berals are behind the `war on cars` in Toronto. Or we can take a bus or subway. We can control oil consumption costs by car pooling or trading in the SUV on a smaller more fuel efficient car etc. We HAVE some choices about gas consumption-not many, but SOME!

With electricity we HAVE NO CHOICE-it is produced ONLY by one entity-GOVERNMENT! And we need electricity every day. We need it to run subways. Need it for street lights and stop lights. Need it for the heart monitor Granny is hooked up to. Need it for our furnace-the main fuel may be natural gas or even oil but the thermostat won’t run without electricity! Need it for our computers and machines at work.

Oil is something we can often do without if we are careful. Electricity is something we MUST have EVERY DAY!

All democratic govts long ago adopted the notion that a monopoly is a BAD THING and ought to be regulated heavily. Petro Canada was NOT a monopoly-just a very costly business failure and good riddance . Ontari-owe Hydro is a powerful monopoly that WE ALL need and Ontari-owe Lie-berals are selling it off for short term gain and long term pain-a quick one time infusion of cash in exchange for long term LOST PROFITS!

AND Lie-berals have ended the ability of provincial auditors to even look at the books of the electrical MONOPOLY in future and we ought to be asking what they are planning to hide in those now closed off books! Ontari-owe premier McWynnty-the Great Whore who sold herself, her party and our future to the Hogs has now sold 15 percent of Ontari-owe Hydro and has used that small sale as an excuse to completely shut the Hydro books IN SPITE of Hydro STILL being a publicly owned entity! Petro Canada was an easily replaced money pit. Ontari-owe Hydro is an essential service being stolen from Cdns!

There was NO CHANGE in the price or supply of oil after Petro Canada was sold but there WILL BE big changes in the cost of electricity in future in Ontari-owe! Lie-berals are scamming the public with this one and sneering as if Conservatives were the problem!

Lie-berals blame Conservatives for ruining the economy during the Harper years....yet after the 2008 recession (engineered by U.S. bankers) Lie-berals screamed at Harper for not spending enough borrowed money to save the economy! And now that Trudope-Our foolish Boy with hair for brains-is in charge and the economy is PLUMMETING FURTHER, Lie-berals are blaming Harper for spending TO MUCH! Such absurd hypocrisy from Lie-berals!

And how ironic is it that Justin, the Boy with nice hair for Brains campaigned in the recent election promising to CLOSE DOWN the Alberta tar sands projects-the COSTLY creation of Pierre Trudeau and his Lie-berals! Lie-berals are so muddled they cannot even keep their own policy straight much less figure out what others are doing or why!

Although the truth is that Our Boy is so selfish and pig headed that he will hurt anybody who disagrees with him-if he can. So oil from Lie-beral loathing Alberta stays in the ground while natural gas from more liberal friendly provinces is put in a new pipeline and shipped off to the west coast and environmentalists be damned-there are LIE-beral votes at stake!

And why has the Cdn dollar sunk so far and so fast recently? Money managers and economists are a LOT smarter than poor Justin and they can see (even if he cannot) that his economic `plan` is nothing more than a retread of the crap thrown at us by NDP Bob Rae!

The international money managers that Our hair-brained Boy wants to borrow from have seen this loonie leftist Lie-beral trick before-does anybody other than disgusted bankers remember Bob Rae and his Rae days? BoB the BOOB was going to spend us rich with borrowed money! Or look at the recent example of stupid debt and how best to piss off your creditors perpetrated in Greece! Money managers don’t like what they see of Our Boy! The Boy with hair for brains has been on the job for only a few months and the economic world has cast its vote: a 74 cent Cdn dollar is our reward for “letting the deficit take care of itself”!

Civil service Working Family Hogs LOVE the Boy because he is going to BUY their support and their love....but the real world of sensible economists think the Boy has hair for brains and Cdns ought to be economically punished for being stupid enough to elect the dolt!

But Lie-berals will tell you its all Harpers fault! Even when its LIE-beral promises being broken its STILL somehow all Harpers fault! LIE-berals want the Harper regime buried and forgotten so nobody will look back and compare foolish LIE-berals to previous more responsible govts! Its why Our Boy admires the Chinese-because THE PARTY writes the history! And Our Boy wonders why some people call his party LIE-berals?

Another debate I can see growing in the next electon is the debate between growth vs. stability. In other words, is it the government's job to grow the economy at all cost even if on credit, or is it its job to maintain stability and sustainability while seeing growth as an added bonus when it happens?

i did not blame Harper for the last recession, so I won't hold Trudeau accoundable to the slowed growth recently either. Some things are beyond their control.

However, I will hold Trudeau accountable for inflation, interest rates, and debt. Those are three things over which government does have control to a reasonable degree.

POOR SERRYAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Apparently she is UNAWARE of the oil fields off the coast of Newfoundland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

And Serryah is UNAWARE of the integrated nature of oil production in the world generally and North America specifically!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The entire continent is ONE BIG MARKET with oil dispatched to where it is needed as it is needed by multi national companies that make VERY FEW distinctions between various passports carried by their customers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALL OIL SALES ARE PRICED IN Yankee dollars so it does not matter who sells what within the North American market!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Serryah asks: "why not build more refineries out west"????????????

Two reasons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First oil is safer and less volatile to handle and ship than gasoline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One has only to read up on the number of gruesome fires that ignite regularly in Nigeria and sometimes in Mexico where gas is put into pipelines!!

It is quite common for thieves to crack open a line and steal gas and always sooner or later somebody gets careless and sparks a HUGE INFERNO that kills many people scavenging for free fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly- economies of scale- the bigger the refinery - the lower the operating costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oil companies long ago decided that a few HUGE REFINERIES were cheaper to operate than multiple small refineries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hands of Cdn govt are TIED on this issue- anybody familiar with the history of Petro Canada will KNOW that it is best for tax payers that govt NOT MEDDLE in the oil biz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most oil for eastern North America comes from either Venezuela or Mexico...............with added shipments from other sources for specialty products- such as modest shipments of oil from Saudi Arabia that is easier to refine into certain lubricating greases and specialty products ...........for reasons that would require a chemist to explain in any detail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE Cdns HAVE A CHOICE HERE-------we can continue buying oil from Mexico and Venezuela.............OR we can ship oil east from Alberta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As media has repeatedly TOLD US..............Alberta oil is being sold AT A HUGE DISCOUNT because there are no pipelines to ship that oil off to new markets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alberta NEEDS NEW oil markets because some of its old markets have been RECENTLY CLOSED OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New technology now in use in United States has enabled Yankees to substantially INCREASE the flow of oil from existing oil fields!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thus the Alberta oil is suddenly shut out of some Yankee markets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By continuing to buy oil from South American members of OPEC and shunning Alberta oil- LIE-berals are DOOMING Alberta to slow financial strangulation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

Alberta is just like other Cdn provinces- wrestling with massive debts .............but in the case of Alberta- it cannot pay those debts without OIL REVENUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The province of Alberta will face ECONOMIC CHAOS UNLESS it can sell its oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE - that in this commentary- THERE IS NO NEED FOR DISCUSSION OF INCREASED POLLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

NOR WILL THERE BE INCREASED USE OF FOSSIL FUEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We face ONLY a discussion of where we will buy the product we CDNS will CONTINUE to use as before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For political reasons that are UTTERLY DIVORCED FROM ECONOMIC REALITY.............LIE-berals want to kill the Alberta oil patch and force us to continue buying oil from Corrupt Socialist South American govt producers who operate with LOWER pollution regulations than Cdn oil patch does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And there is an additional issue that LIE-berals DO NOT want to discuss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BOTH Russia and Iran use their oil revenue to buy weapons with which to BULLY their neighbours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Given a fair choice between buying oil from HOSTILE Russians and Iranians..................OR to buy oil from harmless Cdns........... MANY people in many places would prefer to buy from Cdns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By refusing to allow the export of Alberta oil Our idiot Boy and his loser LIE-berals are actually CONTRIBUTING to military and economic INSTABILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canadian Coast Guard's Fleet At Risk Of 'Unrecoverable Failure': Documents

OTTAWA — Reduced search-and-rescue coverage, ferry-service disruptions, cancelled resupply runs to Arctic and coastal communities and nearly $2 million in lost navigational buoys.

Those are among the real safety, social and commercial impacts that communities across the country are starting to feel as the Canadian Coast Guard's fleet gets older, according to new documents obtained by The Canadian Press.

And the problems are expected to get worse: the documents warn that more than a third of the coast guard's 26 large vessels have exceeded their expected lifespans and many won't survive until replacements arrive.

Coverage of search-and-rescue areas reduced

"Vessels are at increasing risk of unrecoverable failure," reads one PowerPoint presentation prepared by coast guard officials last summer and marked "secret." "Many ships will not remain operational until their replacements arrive." Obtained through the access-to-information law, the documents underline the stakes facing the federal government and various communities if Canada does not have a capable coast-guard fleet.

They come amid questions about how and when the government will replace the coast guard's existing vessels. Only five new coast-guard ships are currently included in the government's multibillion-dollar national shipbuilding plan. The PowerPoint presentation is particularly frank in its assessment of what it describes as the "early impacts of an older fleet coupled with increasing demand" that are already visible.

"Over the past four years, lengthening repair periods and unplanned outages have temporarily reduced coverage in all four offshore search-and-rescue areas in Atlantic Canada," reads one section.

The coast guard has also lost nearly $2 million in navigational buoys in recent years "because they could not be removed due to ship availability and ice conditions," the presentation adds.

Ferry services have been interrupted, specifically Marine Atlantic's operations serving Newfoundland and commercial ships have been left waiting for days for icebreakers "at significant costs to industry." Canada has also failed to meet its obligations under the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization in recent years for fisheries conservation and protection "due to repair and maintenance issues," the presentation says.

And the resupply of Arctic and coast communities have been delayed or cancelled — a problem that continued even after the presentation was prepared, as residents of three communities in the Northwest Territories can attest from last fall. "I don't know why they couldn't have arranged an icebreaker," John Holland, senior administrative officer for the hamlet of Paulatuk, told The Canadian Press in October after one scheduled sea lift was cancelled.

Fleet still 'reliable,' minister says

The coast guard has a long history of being overlooked and ignored in political Ottawa, which is one of the key factors in the age of the agency's fleet, said Rob Huebert, an expert on the Arctic at the University of Calgary.

The presentation underscores the impact of such neglect, he said, namely real safety concerns, in the case of search-and-rescue servicesand lost navigational buoys, and northern communities cut off from supplies. "We have talked in the past about an older coast-guard fleet and that there are problems (but) we can't get into details because the details are never presented," Huebert said. "This is the actual reality. This is what is happening."

Asked about the documents this week, Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson insisted in a statement the fleet "remains reliable" and the federal government "takes the renewal of the coast-guard fleet seriously."

Ottawa recently bought three second-hand icebreakers to pick up some of the slack, he noted, while the multibillion-dollar national shipbuilding plan includes money for one icebreaker and four science ships for the coast guard.

"We will continue to look at solutions so that Canadians can continue to receive the services they need," Wilkinson added.

Yet exactly when Seaspan Shipyards in Vancouver will deliver the fiveships included in the national shipbuilding plan remains uncertain, let alone when the government will decide how and when to replace the rest of the fleet. Seaspan was supposed to deliver the first of three fisheries-science vessels in early 2017 before problems were found with the ship's welding. It then crashed into a breakwater last month while returning from its first test run at sea.

A behind-the-scenes battle over contracts

Government officials say they still anticipate receiving that science ship this summer and that the other two will follow over the next year or so. Even if that happens, there is no firm schedule for the new heavy icebreaker and other science vessel to arrive.

Seaspan has also been tapped to build two new supply ships for the navy, the first of which won't be delivered until at least 2023.

Meanwhile, Seaspan and its Quebec-based rival Davie have been engaged in a fierce behind-the-scenes battle over the contracts for 10 other coast-guard ships that were promised to the Vancouver yard in 2013.

Seaspan has all but warned that its survival is contingent on building those ships, which were initially estimated to cost $3.3 billion.

Davie, however, has pointed out that Seaspan won't be able to start work on the ships for years and wants the government to shift the business to Davie.

Party’s Over: Why We Need to Abolish Political Parties

As Simone Weil observed decades ago, they’re self-serving entities that elevate power and control above justice and the truth.

In 1943 Simone Weil, a French philosopher and mystic, concluded that political parties had become organizations dedicated to one purpose: “killing in all souls the sense of truth and justice.”
Although her radical essay calling for the abolition of political parties wasn’t published until 1950, it remains the only polished political stone on a beach now smothered in plastic.
The rightness of Weil’s argument is about as obvious as the opioid crisis, the existential threat of climate change or the demise of global economic growth.
In the United States two political parties have now divided the nation with the kind of violent partisan rhetoric that erupted just before the Civil War. Across the Western world, political parties have turned parliaments into digital circuses, provoking waves of contempt among ordinary people.
As a consequence, social research and the daily news suggest that people are losing faith in democracies and looking for caudillos (dictators) to set things right.
Declining voter turnout also indicates that people no longer regard political parties as legitimate instruments of democratic representation.
Canada reflects this dark reality too: every party here seems dedicated to breaking promises or thwarting the public interest with equanimity. It’s difficult to tell any difference between Liberals, Tories and New Democrats because all serve power, or the elites that employ that power in a technological society.
Now to truly appreciate the brilliance of Weil’s short essay, you need to know one or two things about her. Born in 1909 Weil lived among ordinary working people and donated most of her money earned by teaching Greek and philosophy to labour movements.
In 1938 God captured her, but Weil (pronounced “while”) rejected organized religion or any form of mass conformism. She wrote with the honesty of an unwashed prophet.
