US, Canadian fighter planes scramble to escort Russian jets

I wonder how much the F-22's had to throttle back to let the Canadian's keep up

Speed is passe in fighter jet capability.

IN fact fighter jets are passe in terms of aviation capability.

They are only effective against inferior force - like dropping bombs on Libya etc etc.

So still good for controlling the 2nd and 3rd world, but useless against modern weaponry.

It's not about "balls"! Some people are lovers and some are fighters. I for one am NOT a fighter unless as an absolute last resort. I don't want to kill any strangers and I don't want them killing me! It takes more "balls" to walk away from a fight than to engage in one...……………….. more brains too!

You don't want to kill anyone you just want other people to kill for you.

Yes, we all get it.

Someone else can do the hauling, driving, fighting and dying for you, eh?

Well, thanks for that.

If you get rid of NORAD, the USAF then patrols ALL of our air space without our knowledge, permission and possibly against our strategic interests, from time-to-time.

You'll be the first whiner in line when some future American fruit-loop ding-dong President starts disallowing tourist flights returning from Cuba and turning them back to land in Mexico or the Carribean.

Don't think for a second that they aren't capable of electing someone like that or doing something like that because of the gigantic security threat that Cuba represents to that undereducated 1/3rd.

Sorry, son, but since the middle 1800s there has been exactly one conflict that was an existential threat to Canada and the U.S. And no, it wasn't WWII. Neither Germany nor Japan possessed the necessary technology nor industrial power to destroy or conquer North America.

It was the Cold War. And you and I had the ability and opportunity to sign up and do our part. Curious Cdn did. EagleSmack did. gopher did. Blackleaf did. I did.

It was a rough war. No medals, no adoring crowds. We maintained the pressure, and the readiness. The unofficial motto of SOCIII in western Germany was "Anytime, baby!" We held the line until the internal contradictions of the Soviet Union brought it crashing down.

Not everybody participated. It wasn't an "all hands on deck" situation like the World Wars were. I don't fault any man for not getting stuck in. And I don't fault any man for questioning whether this or that military decision, then or now, was the right one.

But all y'all fellas that didn't sign up owe those of us who did "pride of place" in discussions of military policies and politics. Not that you don't have a voice and a choice, just that the sort of common decency that you seem so concerned about means you let the ones who served have their say before you stick your oar in.

I don't mean this to be hostile or aggravating. I hope I didn't come off that way. But the choices we made give us the right to jump to the head of the queue.

It cost trillions of dollars and four and a half decades to win. Millions died in fringe proxy wars gererated by the Cold War but, most importantly, humanity (and vertebrate life itself) survived. Better millions than billions.

And you did your bit. As did EagleSmack. I'm truly sorry the two of you bring that into your other arguments.

I got one thing to say to all the good people who served in the Cold War. . .

What does this attack have to do with my comment? I would have no problem joining to defend our country.

Right now I have been advocating support for our military by wanting them to upgrade their equipment with some of my tax dollars, and my donations.

Yeah, I'll give you a lift down to the recruiting office, and buy you a coffee and 10 Timbits on the way. Just say when and where.

Sure meet you in Regina and I'll buy you a beer, I'm pretty sure you have the wrong impression of me.

And you have the wrong one of me.

How 'bout a reset? I'm game.

Gotta say, even with the acrimony, my "debates" with you have been the best I've had on this board in quite a while.

Promise, we go forward with no pulling up things from before this moment.

You in?

We have some White Helmets that we could sent to that trouble spot to the south.

Fighting wars is just one means of serving the planet and the people on it. There are hundreds of different ways to serve, some care for infirm and elderly, some raise money to improve things in their community, some drive sick and elderly to their appointments, some walk people's dogs, some council disturbed children, so the people who destroy people with guns don't need to get overly proud of themselves. There's an old saying "it takes a bigger man to walk away from a fight than to engage in one".

POOR STUPID HOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

His military prognostications are the political equivalent of passing gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its noisy and nasty but essentially IRRELEVANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If manned fighters were so useless then WHY is BOTH CHINA and Russia building new aircraft carriers???????????????????

And WHY are both China and Russia designing new STEALTH AIRCRAFT????????????????????????

And the typical Hoid response to these questions will be some BULLSH+T about how fast electric cars can go- till they reach the end of the extension cord!!!!!!!!!!

Or - as he does not like seeing his arguments EFFECTIVELY MOCKED - it is likely there will be ONLY SILENCE from Hoid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He will just switch to some other page and thread for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, he looked down on me and I didn't demean anyone because they served in the military. I've known all kinds of people in the military, most are fine people and like in all walks of life a few are Assholes.

You spelled 'Russian jets' wrong. BTW, an F-18 is not a slouch
