The only hope Canad has is if the US annexes the lowest 300 miles of Canad as a 'buffer zone' between them and somebody that would have the nerve to suggest free trade with Cuba

Since you brought up Chinese re-education camps

China says internment camps are 'free vocational training'

Quote:

BEIJING - China is saving ethnic minority Muslims from the lure of religious extremism by teaching them to speak Mandarin and accept modern science, a senior Chinese official said in a report Tuesday, Beijing's latest effort to defend its internment of Muslims against mounting criticism.
Shohrat Zakir, governor of the far west Xinjiang region, described the mass internment of Uighur and Kazakh Muslims as "free vocational training" that also gave people skills to work in factories, according to remarks carried in a report by the official Xinhua News Agency.
Xinjiang, the tense northwestern region where most Uighurs live, has been enveloped in recent years in a vast dragnet of police surveillance that authorities insist is needed to root out separatism and Islamic extremism.
Tuesday's report was a rare public move by a senior Chinese official to detail the ruling Communist Party's vision of what the country's extrajudicial detention of an estimated 1 million ethnic minority Muslims is setting out to achieve.
Key to the party's vision, the Xinhua report showed, was the need for the region's Central Asian ethnic groups to undergo an intensive assimilation in Chinese language, culture and history, and push them to adopt what the party considered a modern, civilized way of life. The region's Turkic-speaking Uighurs (pronounced WEE-gurs) have long resented restrictions placed on their religious practices and complained of meeting widespread discrimination in jobs and access to passports.
Some details in Zakir's depiction of the centres were at odds with accounts provided to The Associated Press by former detainees. They have described being held in camps where they were forced to recite party slogans and renounce their faith.
Omir Bekali, a Xinjiang-born Kazakh citizen, said he was kept in a cell with 40 people inside a heavily guarded facility. Before meals, they were told to chant "Thank the Party! Thank the Motherland!" During daily mandatory classes, they were told that their people were backward before being "liberated" by the party in the 1950s.
Zakir painted a far different picture, saying that "trainees" were immersed in athletic and cultural activities. While they were previously mired in poverty, Zakir said, the training put them on the path toward a "modern life" and made them "confident about the future."
The report comes as China has ramped up propaganda efforts to defend its measures in Xinjiang following growing criticism from Western countries and international human rights groups. The new U.N. human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, said last month that monitors should be allowed into the region, and calls have been made in the U.S. Congress for sanctions on some Chinese officials.

We shouldn't be making deals with our dysfunctional neighbour until they have given the current whacko President the heave-ho and have returned to some semblance of normalcy.

We had a chance at making an amicable deal, but this Gov. chose to make a mockery of it, and waiting for Governors and Senators to step in. Mexico stepped in and made a fair deal for themselves and we had no choice but to accept tweaked crumbs, Should have been the other way around.

If you do your fact-checking before you post you will look less like the idiot you seem to be. The American system used the birth/death database to get voters that are more reliable than some drunk Canadians who come down for a day in which they alone save the US from itself.

Legally, Canada could still give 6 months' notice even after ratifying it. Add to that that we've not even ratified it yet.

Personally, I think Canada should adopt unilateral global free trade.

The Congress ratifies trade treaties in the US, not loud-mouth lunatics. That won't happen for months yet, if at all as the next Congress will likely be of a different composition in a couple of weeks. (They might even lift the aluminum and steel tariffs as their legality is quite dodgy, at best).

Just remember though that the US is not as free-trading as some might like to think. Traditionally, the Democrats have been even more protectionist than the Republicans, Trump being an anomaly in that respect. In short, we can't trust the US to embrace free trade in any reliable manner when one of its two main parties is quite protectionist and the other divided on the subject.

Of course Canadian protectionist sentiments (which are even stronger than in the US, unfortunately), can only throw fuel onto the fire. In that sense, while I certainly don't excuse Trump's insanity, I can't deny that Canada has provoked US protectionism by being so protectionist ourselves. Canada isn't all innocent in this either.

Traditionally, the Republicans have been the free traders but they seem willing to forget that to garner favour from President Whackjob.

Exactly! How reliable can the US be as a trading partner when its more free-trading party flips to protectionism. Again, I'm not excusing Canadian protectionism here and in some respects, Canadian protectionism itself has provoked it to a high degree; but that still doesn't excuse Trump's behaviour and still raises legitimate questions on the US' reliability as a trading partner. That's why I think Canada should turn to unilateral free trade and then engage in trade agreements only to supplement what we can't achieve through unilateral free trade.

In fact, Maxime Bernier's more free-trading stance is what attracts me to him as a politician more so than any other party leader at present. Even Scheer comes across as a hard-core protectionist compared to Bernie.

Rubbish. A good deal for the Americans (and for you, it seems) is one that will rip us off. No "sweetheart" deal was ever offered to Canada. BTW. Trump clearly hates our country.

He doesn't even love his own country, so how was he supposed to love ours?

And no, it wasn't a good deal for the Americans either. It really was a bad deal for all sides involved. In a sense, the US and Canada both got what they wanted: a mostly protectionist trade deal. we get what we deserve I guess.

If that were true, he would have left his tax cuts for the rich out and applied those monies to reducing their masdive and ballooning deficit. He has created a bonanza for an incredibly rich 1.5% of the population and no one else benefits. They are not going to dust off 50 year old steel Mills. Ain't going to happen. Why have American steel and aluminum mills closed by the dozen? The Ameticns are too sloppy and slow to compete and Americans have failed to invest in modern operations.

They're all short-term or busy-work policies. Debt-financed growth is unsustainable in the long run, and tariffs create work by introducing inefficiencies (like a trucker shipping a product from a factory in NYC to Seattle when a business in Vancouver produces the same product, or when a factory in the US must produce a product on a small scale due to retaliatory tariffs when it could otherwise have shipped abroad too, or a factory that buys a less ideal machine domestically to avoid the tariffs on what would have been a more ideal machine, etc.).

All of that does create work, but it's busy work, not actual wealth-generating work.
