“He smoked him.”
That's what a frantic woman told an emergency dispatcher last Thursday after watching her friend get run down by a vehicle.
Gene Williams, 69, of Saint John, N.B. pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon, dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an incident after using his sport utility vehicle to intentionally hit the man.
In a video that has garnered more than 190,000 views on YouTube, a black Audi SUV is seen plowing into a man, sending him airborne.
“Oh my God, he just hit my friend,” said a woman who shot the video. “Yes, he can’t move his arm. I need an ambulance.”
WARNING: Video is graphic in nature
According to police, Williams and the pedestrian, identified as Timothy Tyler, first met in Grand Bay, located outside of Saint John.
Sgt. Charles Breen said Williams got into an argument with several men at a parking lot. He took exception and proceeded to follow Tyler.
Police said Tyler and a female friend drove towards Saint John when they noticed Williams following them. After a 30-minute trip, Tyler and his friend parked their vehicle and exited. That's when Williams swerved towards the two, striking Tyler and fleeing the scene.
“It’s been classified as a road rage — this type of an incident is pretty rare, actually,” said Breen said. “We don’t get a lot of calls concerning incidents like that, not where it’s taken to the extreme that this one was.”
Tyler, 23, was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
“(He was) very lucky,” Breen said. “If you watch the video, he was struck pretty hard by the vehicle.”
Police later located Williams and arrested him. He remains in custody until an April 10 sentencing hearing.
