Gold or bust.
Itís been Team Canadaís mantra at pretty much every single world junior hockey championship. But itís apparently not just a Canadian thing.
Shortly after losing 3-1 in the championship final, Sweden captain Lias Andersson tossed his silver medal into crowd, where a fan caught it and put it around his own neck. There were initial reports that the medal was retrieved, but Andersson denied he got it back. Not that he wanted it.
ďI have a silver medal from the U-18 and I havenít checked it in two years since I lost the last time,Ē said Andersson, when asked if he might regret his decision in the future.
It just showed the level of frustration from the losing side.
Andersson, who led Sweden with six goals, had been one of the teamís best players. But the first-round pick of the New York Rangers and the rest of the team could not get it done, as Sweden gave up the winning goal in the final two minutes of Friday nightís game.
For a team that had gone undefeated heading in the final, it has now been six straight years that Sweden last won gold.
To make matters worse, this yearís loss was the fourth straight time that Sweden had been defeated in the championship final to Canada. No wonder Andersson was upset.

He'll regret it because Swede hockey players come here to earn the big bucks and, perhaps, no one will want to touch him after that behaviour. He may end up playing for the Bugtussle, Alabama Cockroaches for the not-so-big bucks. Would you hire a guy who behaves like that? ... to do anything?

He sure will.

The emotions during that game will subside and he'll be rethinking that move

He's already the first round draft pick for the Rangers. There's no way that anyone will have wasted that pick

I'm sure the Rangers are looking into this with careful eyes.

Yep. Silver medals are just a nice way of saying, "You lost."

And I can sure understand his frustration. The Swedes are something like 44-0 in the preliminary rounds over the years but have only managed to win one gold and that was in 2012.

So, when your team doesn't win, you all get together and deny reality?

There was nobody in the crowd, the hockey was so dull. Did the evening Janitor catch the medal in the stands?

Yeah...it's called 'papering'...giving away tickets to crap nobody in their right mind would pay to watch.

Silver medals for elites are nothing more than participation medals.

Clearly some folks like participation medals
