Child pornography charges have been laid against former Alberta Party leadership candidate Troy Millington.
Court records show Millington, 45, was arrested by Calgary police last month and charged with distributing, or making available child pornography to others, as well as possessing and accessing such material.
The allegations stem from incidents between Sept. 21, 2015, and Feb. 16.
Millington was released on bail following his arrest.
Among the conditions of his no-deposit, $3,000 bail is that he report to probation once a week in person.
He is also to remain in Alberta until his case is resolved, but was granted a five-day exemption last week to travel to B.C.
Millington is prohibited from possessing any device “that is designed for or capable of making or capturing visual recordings.”
Among his other release conditions are that he is to have no Internet access at his residence, or attend any cyber cafes, and is not to have communication with any children unless supervised by another adult.
All three charges, if the prosecution proceeds by indictment, carry mandatory minimum one-year jail terms, but those can run concurrently.
The allegation of distributing or making available child pornography has a maximum punishment of 14 years in a federal penitentiary.
Millington was the sole opponent to Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark when members voted in September 2013 for the new face of the party.
He also unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the legislature in October 2014, losing a byelection in Calgary-West.
He was a member of the party’s board of directors, but is not included in a list of 16 directors on the party’s web page.
In brief statement released Thursday, party leader Clark said: “I am sickened any time I hear about allegations such as these. I have faith in our justice system and until this matter is resolved by the courts I will not make further comment.”
Defence counsel Mike Kiss said his client will fight the charges.
“My client categorically denies the allegations before the courts and looks forward to proving his innocence at trial,” Kiss said in a statement.
Millington returns to court March 21.
