Police conduct pre-dawn gang raids throughout GTA

Toronto police take a suspect into custody during one of 30 home searches conducted by police, Thursday morning, June 19, 2008.

Police conducted numerous early morning raids throughout the GTA on Thursday, rounding up dozens of suspects in what is being called a blitz on drugs, guns and gangs.

About 30 search warrants were executed throughout the city and elsewhere in Ontario, the Toronto Police Service said in a release Thursday morning.

Between 40 and 50 people have been arrested, said CTV's Chris Eby, who was on location at the Rexdale police station being used as a command post.

The raids began before 5 a.m. and wrapped up around 7 a.m. They were conducted by officers from Durham, York and the Toronto police services, the Toronto Star reported.

A man arrested at a trendy condo in Yorkdale has been described as a significant player in the operation under investigation. Another suspect was arrested at a high-end condo building near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue.

Many of those arrested were taken to a 23 Division police station near Finch and Kipling Avenues for processing. Cruisers lined the parking lot outside the station for hours this morning while arresting officers waited their turn to process the suspects.
