The fingerprints of U.S. imperialism can be found all over the manufactured insurrection in Syria, in keeping with the ultimate goal of destabilization and eventual “regime change” through fomenting a sectarian civil war. Former NATO commander Wesley Clark has gone on record as stating that Syria was on a list of targeted nations to be toppled by the U.S. as early as 2001. In 2002, former Secretary of State John Bolton gave a speech titled “Beyond the Axis of Evil” that listed Syria as a handful of nations that could expect to be targeted.
Fast forward to 2011, when an uprising was manufactured in the Syrian city of Dara’a, and Syrians desperate for economic change joined the calls for “freedom.” Mainstream media outlets have largely described the uprisings as being part of a “protest movement” made up of demonstrators who demand the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
But in reality, the main organizers and leaders of this so-called protest movement have been revealed to be U.S.-backed insurgents and foreign militants who have been armed, trained and funded by U.S. and NATO proxies for the purpose of destabilizing Syria though sectarianism.
CIA-backed Muslim Brotherhood assets were already in place to snipe at both police and protesters the day the first demonstrations broke out. Since then, the CIA has funneled hundreds of billions of dollars, as well as staggering amounts of arms, to jihadist recruits, many of whom have poured into Syria from surrounding countries.
The narrative most commonly put forth in mainstream media portrays the Syrian conflict as a popular uprising. However, a closer examination of the events that occurred in Dara’a in March 2011 – commonly described as the beginning of the conflict – reveals substantial and compelling evidence that not only contradicts the mainstream media’s portrayal but also strongly suggests the involvement, both financially and militarily, of outside influences and actuators.

VANCOUVER — A British Columbia man who went to Syria seeking adventure has been detained in the war-ravaged country, and Canada’s foreign ministry says there is little it can do to help him.
The mother of the man from Nanaimo, B.C., said he has not been in touch for more than a month and is pleading for help getting him home.
Andrea Leclair told The Canadian Press that her 44-year-old son Kristian Lee Baxter messaged her daily because she was worried after he arrived in Syria on Nov. 26, but he went silent after his last message on Dec. 1.
Asked about Baxter, Global Affairs Canada confirmed it is aware of a Canadian who has been detained in Syria.
But the department offered no other details and would not confirm his identity, citing the Privacy Act.
The government has been warning Canadians to avoid travelling to Syria since 2011 after the outbreak of a civil war that has attracted foreign powers and spawned a multitude of militias, including a new Islamist terror group, while leaving an estimated 500,000 people dead.
Canada severed diplomatic relations with Syria in 2012, expelling its diplomats and shuttering its embassy.
“Consular services are being provided to the family and to the individual, to the limited extent possible. Given the security situation on the ground, the Government of Canada’s ability to provide consular assistance in any part of Syria is extremely limited,” said Global Affairs spokesman Stefano Maron.
The Global Affairs travel advisory warns all Canadians to avoid travelling to the country because of the ongoing war.
“Syria is not safe for personal travel,” says the department’s online advisory. “Attempting any form of travel in this very hazardous security environment would place you at grave risk. Criminals, terrorists and armed groups target foreigners for terrorist attacks, assassination and kidnapping for ransom or political gain.”
The advisory says the country is plagued by fighting that involves small arms, tanks, artillery, aircraft fire and chemical weapons.
Leclair described her son as a “world traveller and adventurer” and said he visited a village near the border of Lebanon at the invitation of his girlfriend’s brother-in-law, who now lives in Pennsylvania but regularly visits the village.
“I just want him home,” Leclair said.
One of Baxter’s flights was delayed on his way to Beirut so his luggage arrived after him, she said.
The brother-in-law arranged for a driver to pick him up from the airport in Beirut and drive him to the village, and Baxter said the driver assured him that he would collect his luggage for him, Leclair said.
“The driver said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to pick up your suitcase, don’t worry, you just stay and visit.’ So he did. And the driver never came back,” Leclair said.
Baxter went back to the border and was told the driver had been detained because a metal detector, which is a prohibited item, was in his suitcase, she said.
Baxter is a “history buff” and uses his metal detector as a hobby, but didn’t realize it was not permitted across the border, Leclair said.
“He loves to find things, he’ll find silly things like bottle tops but they might be old bottle tops, that kind of thing. He never finds anything of any value,” she said. “Kristian is a world traveller, he’s been all over the place, he’s an adventurer.”
Baxter told the border officials that the suitcase belonged to him, but they did not detain him or release the driver, she said. After four or five days, the driver’s family was getting worried, so Baxter returned once again on Dec. 2 to claim responsibility, she said, even though his girlfriend’s brother-in-law was urging him to leave the country at this point because the situation was worrying him.
He has not been heard from since, she said.
During their final video chat, Baxter said he introduced her to the cousin of the brother-in-law and several other people in the room.
“He introduced me to all these people, he says, ‘They’re such nice people, everywhere I go they’re feeding me and giving me tea and coffee.’ He was just having a really nice time,” she said.
Leclair said she has been frustrated by the lack of information she has been able to get about Baxter. Global Affairs Canada initially told her it could do nothing because there is no functioning Canadian embassy in Syria, then said it might be able to work through the Romanian embassy, she said.
Baxter was supposed to be home Dec. 13 and his travel visa to Syria expired on Dec. 12 or 13, she said.
“It’s so complicated because we just don’t know anything,” Leclair said.

But against the backdrop of growing military and political tensions in the world … statements about the desire to increase its military presence in third countries are counterproductive, destabilizing and possibly provocative in nature,” she said.
“In the case of any measures that pose a threat to the security of Russia or its allies, our country reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures ,” he added.
Russia has military bases in several countries of the former Soviet Union and operates military installations in Syria and Vietnam.
According to the British official, the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU will allow the country to occupy again key positions in the international arena.
At the same time, the politician noted that the United Kingdom will abandon the strategy “East of Suez”, adopted in 1968, because the country had to withdraw its contingent of military bases in Malaysia, Singapore, Persian Gulf and Maldives.

Russia has rejected a US demand for Moscow to destroy a new cruise missile system, a weapon Washington alleges is in violation of the landmark Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Monday it was unacceptable for Washington to demand Moscow destroy its SSC-8/9M729 cruise missile, denying the missile system is in breach of INF.
INF was a Cold-War era treaty signed in 1987 that eliminated all nuclear and conventional missiles with ranges of 1,000–5,500 km (620–3,420 mi).
Ryabkov also said Russia has proposed putting on a demonstration of the missile for the United States, the Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.
"We are ready to show unprecedented transparency on the 9M729 missile, which alarms the Americans so much. We offered them a presentation and a briefing on the missile, which absolutely does not follow from the content of the treaty itself,” he said.
“But at the same time, we insist that the Americans take practical steps to alleviate our concerns on the Aegis Ashore systems, deployed in Romania, whose deployment is also scheduled in Poland soon."
The statement comes after earlier in the day US disarmament ambassador Robert Wood called on Russia to "verifiably destroy” the missiles in order to save the INF treaty and accused Moscow of destabilizing global security.
Wood said the system was capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads and represented a "potent and direct threat to Europe and Asia" as it had a range of 500 to 1,500 kilometers (310-620 miles).
"Unfortunately, the United States increasingly finds that Russia cannot be trusted to comply with its arms control obligations and that its coercive and malign actions around the globe have increased tensions," Wood told the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has decided to file bribery charges against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Case 4000, the Bezeq-Walla Affair, says a senior legal official, according to Israel’s Ulpan Shlishi news program on Friday night.
According to the report, senior officials involved in advanced discussions say the decision has already been made to charge Netanyahu. Mandelblit has accepted the recommendation of the State Attorney’s Office, specifically that of the Tel-Aviv Financial and Tax District Office, to indict Netanyahu in Case 4000.
The Bezek-Walla Affair is a case in which Netanyahu allegedly received positive news coverage from website Walla!, which is owned by telecommunications giant Bezek in exchange for preferential regulatory treatment granted to the telecom giant.
Channel 12’s Mako news site reported that the prime minister’s attorneys responded to the news, saying: “On the eve of a meeting between us and the attorney general, there is no room for leaks aimed at sabotaging the meeting and damaging our right to be fairly heard.”
On Thursday, Mandelblit had invited Netanyahu’s attorneys on the matter of delaying a decision on whether to charge the prime minister until after the elections, according to the Mako website. The site reported that the letter sent from the attorney general’s office said that even elections were no reason to delay cases against public officials or candidates.
On December 3, the Israeli police recommended that Netanyahu be charged with bribery and fraud in Case 4000, together with his wife Sarah, and the controlling shareholder of Bezek at the time, Shaul Elovitch, along with others.

French jihadists detained in Syria by Kurdish-led forces could be allowed to return home, France said Tuesday in a possible change of policy brought about by the planned withdrawal of U.S. forces.
France is worried that French prisoners held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) could be released or escape after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans last month to pull American forces out of Syria.
"Given the development of the military situation in north-east Syria, the American decisions, and to ensure the security of the French, we are examining all options to avoid the escape and scattering of these potentially dangerous individuals," the French foreign ministry said in a statement.
"If the forces who are guarding the French fighters took the decision to expel them to France they would be immediately placed in the hands of the law," it added.
Making clear that the jihadists -- many of whom enlisted with Islamic State -- would face the full weight of the law, the ministry added: "These people voluntarily joined a terrorist organization which is fighting in the Levant, carried out attacks in France and continues to threaten us."
Speaking to BFM news channel earlier Tuesday, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner linked the decision to the U.S. withdrawal.
"The Americans are pulling out of Syria. There are currently people in prison (in a Kurdish-controlled part of Syria) and who are being held because the Americans are there and who will be freed," he said.

The US announced its withdrawal from Syria in 2018 with President Donald Trump suggesting that other states in the region will clear out the remains of the terrorist organisation.

Daesh* could reclaim some of its territories within 6 to 12 months after the US concludes its presence in Syria, NBC News reported, citing an obtained draft Pentagon paper. The paper, which is scheduled to be released next week, reportedly says that without the US military pressure on the terrorist organisation, it will soon start working to reinstating the caliphate in a "physical" form. The terror group is mainly resorting to guerrilla warfare tactics at present.

Tehran unveiled its new Hoveyzeh heavy medium-range cruise missile over the weekend at a defence exhibition dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The missile has a reported range of over 1,350 km, covering much of the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Pointing to three Iranian missile tests carried out in rapid succession between 29 December and 2 February, the website noted that "by test number three, the Hoveyzeh, which belongs to the Soumar family of cruise missiles, demonstrated that, while the Israel's Defence Ministry Research Administration and the US Missile Defence Agency were intent on developing missiles capable of striking targets outside the earth's atmosphere, the Islamic Republic had succeeded in producing low-flying cruise missiles that fly to target under the radar."

Iraqi lawmakers are mulling legislation to terminate the security agreement with the United States, according to the First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi parliament, Hassan Karim.

"During the next session, the parliament will work on the bill that would include the end of the security agreement with the United States, as well as the end of the presence of the US and other foreign military trainers and advisers in Iraq", Kaabi said in a statement released on the parliament website.
The statement comes amid US President Donald Trump's recent comment on the situation in the country.
