heya henry! I am always out of place henry...ehm except in them there hills and rivers :P for your pleasure henry...since lip smack has turned this thread into troll patrol.

A man walks into an office.

Man: Good morning, I'd like to have an argument, please.
Receptionist: Certainly, sir. Have you been here before?
Man: No, this is my first time.
Receptionist: I see, well we'll see who's free at the moment.
Mr. Bakely's free, but he's a little bit concilliatory. No.
Try Mr. Barnhart, room 12.
Man: Thank you.

He enters room 12.

Angry man: WHADDAYOU WANT?
Man: Well, Well, I was told outside that...
Angry man: DON'T GIVE ME THAT, YOU SNOTTY-FACED HEAP OF PARROT DROPPINGS!
Man: What?
A: SHUT YOUR FESTERING GOB, YOU TIT! YOUR TYPE MAKES ME PUKE! YOU VACUOUS
STUFFY-NOSED MALODOROUS PERVERT!!!
M: Yes, but I came here for an argument!!
A: OH! Oh! I'm sorry! This is abuse!
M: Oh! Oh I see!
A: Aha! No, you want room 12A, next door.
M: Oh...Sorry...
A: Not at all!
A: (under his breath) stupid git.

The man goes into room 12A. Another man is sitting behind a desk.

Man: Is this the right room for an argument?
Other Manpause) I've told you once.
Man: No you haven't!
Other Man: Yes I have.
M: When?
O: Just now.
M: No you didn't!
O: Yes I did!
M: You didn't!
O: I did!
M: You didn't!
O: I'm telling you, I did!
M: You didn't!
O: (breaking into the developing argument) Oh I'm sorry, is this a five minute
argument, or the full half hour?
M: Ah! (taking out his wallet and paying) Just the five minutes.
O: Just the five minutes. Thank you.
Anyway, I did.
M: You most certainly did not!
O: Now let's get one thing perfectly clear: I most definitely told you!
M: Oh no you didn't!
O: Oh yes I did! ___
M: Oh no you didn't! \
O: Oh yes I did! \
M: Oh no you didn't! \
O: Oh yes I did! \
M: Oh no you didn't! \
O: Oh yes I did! \
M: Oh no you didn't! \
O: Oh yes I did! > very fast
M: Oh no you didn't! /
O: Oh yes I did! /
M: No you DIDN'T! /
O: Oh yes I did! /
M: No you DIDN'T! /
O: Oh yes I did! /
M: No you DIDN'T! /
O: Oh yes I did! ___/
M: Oh look, this isn't an argument!

(pause)

O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!

(pause)

M: It's just contradiction!
O: No it isn't!
M: It IS!
O: It is NOT!
M: You just contradicted me!
O: No I didn't!
M: You DID!
O: No no no!
M: You did just then!
O: Nonsense!
M: (exasperated) Oh, this is futile!!

(pause)

O: No it isn't!
M: Yes it is!
(pause)
I came here for a good argument!
O: AH, no you didn't, you came here for an *argument*!
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
O: Well! it CAN be!
M: No it can't!
An argument is a connected series of statement intended to establish a
proposition.
O: No it isn't!
M: Yes it is! 'tisn't just contradiction.
O: Look, if I *argue* with you, I must take up a contrary position!
M: Yes but it isn't just saying "no it isn't".
O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
O: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!
O: Yes it is!
M: No it ISN'T! Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just
the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says.
O: It is NOT!
M: It is!
O: Not at all!
M: It is!

>DING!< The Arguer hits a bell on his desk and stops.

O: Thank you, that's it.
M: (stunned) What?

O: That's it. Good morning.
M: But I was just getting interested!
O: I'm sorry, the five minutes is up.
M: That was never five minutes!!
O: I'm afraid it was.
M: (leading on) No it wasn't.....

(pause)
O: (dirty look) I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue any more.
M: WHAT??
O: If you want me to go on arguing, you'll have to pay for another five
minutes.
M: But that was never five minutes just now!
(pause... the Other Man raises his eyebrows)
Oh Come on!
Oh this is...
This is ridiculous!
O: I told you...
I told you, I'm not allowed to argue unless you PAY!
M: Oh all right. (takes out his wallet and pays again.) There you are.
O: Thank you.
M: (clears throat) Well...
O: Well WHAT?
M: That was never five minutes just now.
O: I told you, I'm not allowed to argue unless you've paid!
M: Well I just paid!
O: No you didn't!
M: I DID!!!
O: YOU didn't!
M: I DID!!!
O: YOU didn't!
M: I DID!!!
O: YOU didn't!
M: I DID!!!
O: YOU didn't!
M: (unable to talk straight he's so mad) I don't want to argue about it!
O: Well I'm very sorry but you didn't pay!
M: Ah HAH!! Well if I didn't pay, why are you arguing??? Ah HAAAAAAHHH!
Gotcha!

O: (pause) No you haven't!
M: Yes I have!
If you're arguing, I must have paid.
O: Not necessarily.
I *could* be arguing in my spare time.

...and I also think that you still do not get it...

...your assertions that not regulating media monopolies preserves free-speech and expression is just plain wrong-headed...

...it would do quite the opposite, as there would be only one version of the news being presented...which would be alright for you if it was a pro-conservative news source, but what if it was pro-liberal, or pro-NDP??

...of course that would never happen, because the Liberal party, and more so the NDP recognize the dangers of allowing one media outlet to own all of the news in a given area...

...but if this scenario were to happen, that all of the news in your area was pro-NDP, would you be so vigilant in denouncing regulations to prevent those monopolies?

...somehow I don't think so...

Of coarse you don't think so. I've already explained to you that I don't look at things that way nor act that way, but youíre being a little on the thickheaded side about this, so you
"don't think so".

I donít give a ratís ass if all the private media in my area is pro NDP and worships Stalin and believe the Communist Manifesto is divinely inspired. I wouldnít complain about it to the government, I would do something about it, like start up my own media outlet etc.

It would seem to me that paranoia has set in deeply like a rigor mortise that does not allow for the left to see what a splendid occasion it would be that this horrible monopoly has taken hold, and only opened up doors of opportunity for an entrepreneur to take advantage and start a different media outlet saying something different than what the other guy says. Free enterprise works.

The jack-booted Nazis in this country are going to control how the media works and keep lists of ppl with guns. Good going guys. The left is always looking out for freedom!!

We're talking about preserving rights, not taking them away. Press monopolies demonstrably limit freedom of information and expression.

Its also run by the Feds Blair, its not part of the "free press". We have been over that a few thousand times. The CBC is fair game. If it was private and did exactly the same thing it does now, I wouldn't say a bloody thing about it, unlike you who complains about free press and loves the Fed's press.

And for that matter, if the lovely Peapod is correct and all of Canada loves the CBC, you would think it would survive just fine with out taxpayers money. I dunno would it?

Free enterprise works.

Quote:

And it is limited enough already. No need to bring in laws to limit it further. I'm not suggesting the left hasn't done anything good, they have. I'm just not willing to discuss it with you, as you would misinterpreted it or construe it to mean I agree with the left in the way you would like. Free enterprise works, its simple.

Your actually avoiding the point by limiting your response to what you did on that point. I maintain that if you are not happy with your media in your area, and you have the gumption, start your own. Don't go run and draft laws we don't need. If any laws need to be written, I would suggest something that would help make opening up your own media outlet easier, if that can be done.
So you have the right to open up your own media outlet and you have the CBC. You have no problem.

He does, its his opponents who favour jack-boots.

Quote:

Screw that...I'm not trying to get out of it. I admit I don't have a huge problem with private monopolies creeping up, like Microsoft and its monopoly on OPSs. I believe this sort of thing is bound to happen, and if the competition can not come up with a better product it is going to remain that way, unless the government busts it up. You have no problem with the Government having monopolies, and that is communism, you believe in the collective, I believe in the private, That would make you the ( Jay uses his discretion and doesn't call Rev a BLANK because he knows Rev doesn't like to be called BLANK even if Rev is a BLANK) BLANK.
I understand that from time to time the government has to bust up a monopoly, like Standard Oil. In reality we can't have monopolies on oil in the USA, we need competition or the price of oil will be set by one person and that isn't how we set oil prices in a free market. This doesn't imply however that it is OK to legislate who can own what media where and when, because the government should not be guessing what the ppl want to hear, that is up to public to decide and get involved in, not the government.

Quote:

We're talking about preserving rights, not taking them away. Press monopolies demonstrably limit freedom of information and expression.

I know you mean well Rev, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. You will be restricting my right to own press in the fashion I wish to own it in. And that isn't acceptable. As I've already stated, if you do not like the press where you live start another. Sounds like there is good money to be made in BC and Saskatchewan and a need to be filled. Feel like starting up a news paper with me?

Quote:

You forgot to mention that Ontario votes Liberal, Jay.

Federally we do, provincially we don't. We would vote conservative if we had a leader from Ontario at the conservative helm. I think John Tory is one to watch, but I can't say that definitely. We don't vote NDP mind you because they would shut down all our industry and we are the driving force in this nation, in other words we pay the bills around here.

Not without ads. That's one of the things that Canadians love about CBC radio. Are even perpherally aware that the United States is the only developed country without a state-owned broadcaster, BTW? Another area where your heros lag sadly behind the rest of the world.

Quote:

I'll bet you don't even know what jack-boots look like. You're reference to Nazis clearly falls closer to the Harper camp, who would do away with any opposition to their insane ideas, than to anybody else.

Quote:

You did exactly that, JJ. You took my statement completely out of context. Did you think nobody reads posts around here? Did you think I wasn't going to remember? You got caught lying and cheating, buddy.

Have you not been paying attention? Is your reading comprhension so low that you can't understand what I've said. Let me repeat it for you. Nobody is saying that you can't own a press outlet. We are saying that you cannot own all of the press outlets in an area.

Quote:

Federally we do, provincially we don't.

Hmmm....I'm forty. It seems to me that there have been a few non-conservative governments in Ontario in my life. It's also strong union territory...not very conservative there. So what's the deal, JJ...are you experiencing some sort of amnesia?

Quote:

You will have to wait along time my friend. Besides Dear you don't want to back ppl like me into corners...

All it ever was to them was a political tool though...they didn't care if it made money as long as it promoted their interests. Because of the way they used it to promote those interests the National Post became a joke though, so it was no longer an effective political tool.
