However, automakers in Canada face higher costs of labour and other expenses than at factories in parts of the United States and Mexico.

Pffft, Klobal warmink...nothing but hot hier.

General Motors is shuttering its plant in Oshawa as part of a restructuring of its global operations to focus on autonomous and zero-emission vehicles, sources say

Like the world needs more zero emission vehicles...

Maybe if they were self pedaling.

The Gm Oshawa plant had consistently the highest quality production values of any North American plant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet they are being shut down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is proof of the influence of politics meddling in our business world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well......GM made rotten vehicles anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What with slipping transmissions and the micro lubrication problems of vortec engines that cause problems with head gaskets- GM just is not good value!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So good riddance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It all means one less union gang for LIE-berals to BRIBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Though it will be HARD FOR OSHAWA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or not- if GM sells off its properties quickly- just think of all the new housing land that would be opened up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And all those new homes will need masses of new public transit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So there is a BIG election issue for Ford to support in 2022!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GM also closing plants in Ohio and Michigan .

Like Ford they have been hit hrd by the switch in consumer spending away from cars and towards SUVS and trucks, and by the Trump tariffs, which have cost them a billion dollars.

MAGA

They are planning to confine themselves to electric and self driving cars, which will be shared rather than owned.

A little late, as is normal for massive corporations.

Like in 'electric'??

https://sputniknews.com/business/201...losure-oshawa/
GM’s operations are a significant part of economic growth and jobs in the city, long considered to be Canada’s motor city.

General Motors Canada will be announcing the closure of all operations in Oshawa, Canada on 26 November, multiple anonymous sources told CTV News Toronto. If the report is true, the move will affect at least some 2,500 workers, plus others in related spheres, such as auto parts productions.

https://sputniknews.com/business/201...ring-decrease/
US vehicle company General Motors has decided to cut US$5.5 billion in manufacturing, purchasing and administrative costs over the next three years, the company has announced. However, could this impact Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" vision?

General Motors (GM) told Wall Street analysts that the savings made in manufacturing, logistics and IT will help them in the development of new technology such as driverless cars.
GM, a US company, decided to offset funding used for other areas into investments in brand development and new technology. The company says it wants to start testing a fleet of self-driving Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid cars in 2018 at its headquarters in Detroit.

OH HOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You POOR SAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your horse sh+t is not enough to buy you any true friends in the LIE-beral party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a neighbour who has owned 4 Gm trucks in 15 years and had TWO of the engines self destruct!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem with GM vortec engines is the result of rather uneven oil circulation- some areas of cylinder head and valves dont get quite enough oil- which results in LOCALIZED OVERHEATING!

The engine warning lights do not come on because the engine generally is running within heat tolerances- but those nasty little LOCALIZED oil dry spots promote premature stress on cylinder head gaskets which leads to engine oil contaminated with engine coolant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oil watered down with engine coolant promotes engine DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A minor case- such as if the vehicle is driven locally- simply creates loss of compression and power......but a major case- such as a vehicle hauling a heavy load on high way- promotes pistons blowing through oil pan and etc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This Gm problem compares badly to older Fords which used to need a new engine computer every 100,000 Km!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the older Fords- if you were quick- you could run for home if the engine started coughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then it was simply a new plug in of a Ford computer part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But replacing an entire GM vortec engine is a MUCH MESSIER BUSINESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then add in the GM slipping transmission club and Gm is in trouble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Hoid- as for your idiot idea that Cdns will go for shared ownership of your beloved electric TOY CARS- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go stand at the side of highway 400 on any Friday evening and watch the avalanche of OWNED MACHINES heading north to cottage country and personal play time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your electric Toys do not haven either the range OR the cargo capacity to suit most Cdns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the general public has already SCORNED YOU AND YOUR LIE-beral electric car subsidy SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BY whom? That last part kills me. Windsor had 8 plants between the three automakers. GM's, transmission and trim plants. Chrysler's min-van and full size van and truck plants. And Ford's foundry, aluminum casting plant, engine plant and experimental facility.

Late? Seriously bud, even the most optimistic projections claim that 2040 will be the earliest we see that happen. And how exactly, does an automaker expect to make money selling cars if all the cars are going to be autonomous and shared? Shared being the operative word there. Someone has to purchase them. The automaker isn't just going to release them to the public out of the goodness of their hearts.

The only option would be the Govt buys them all and just gives the money to the corporations and the taxpayer can fork over the cash for the next 100 years or so.

I know new business models confuse people, but seriously?

The 40 year time you mention is simply your own estimation of when something you do not understand could possibly occur.

It is in fact here and now. Those jobs that are getting cut are real, and GMs restructure is necessary.

GM to close Canadian plant, but that's just the beginning

Quote:

But moving that car, the Chevrolet Cruze, south of the border brings the risk of provoking a backlash from President Donald Trump. And GM also isn't sure whether he'll make good on threats to impose 25 percent tariffs on vehicles imported from Canada and Mexico.
What's more, the Cruze plant just outside Youngtown is in a Democratic and labor stronghold, where Trump won over a surprising number of voters two years ago by reaching out to what he called America's "forgotten men and women."
At a rally near the plant last summer, Trump talked about passing by big factories whose jobs "have left Ohio," then told people not to sell their homes because the jobs are "coming back. They're all coming back."
Altogether, GM has five car factories with plenty of unused capacity in Kansas City, Kansas; Lordstown; and Detroit-Hamtramck, Lansing, and Orion Township, Michigan.
GM opened its factory in Oshawa, near Toronto, in 1953. The plant is used to make the Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala sedans as well as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.
A GM spokesman declined to comment. GM had been expected to close plants because of struggling sales.
Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, said in a prepared statement that it does not have complete details of Monday's announcement, but it has been informed that there is no product allocated to the Oshawa plant past December 2019.

The 4 or 5 plant closures in the US and the 10k plus lost jobs there are certainly proof the the tax cuts have worked and that Trump has delivered on his promise to bring all those high paying manufacturing jobs back to the rust belt.

Now lets have those 4 rate hikes

2040 is when electric vehicles are expected to become dominant; not when they are introduced. You should start seeing models in the 2020s and there will be millions by the 2030s. Given the speed at which technology is changing I suspect it could happen even faster than that, especially with a number of mainstream automakers now on board and with continual improvements in electric car range and battery charging times.

Oh HOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You DO LIKE TO SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT DONT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You say people are switching away from cars in favour of SUV`s and trucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what you are telling us is that the public is growing EVEN LESS TOLERANT of your beloved electric toy cars then they were a few years back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your electric Toy vehicles with their modest range even in ideal weather- and we know how the range is drastically curtailed in cold

below 10 C - coupled with their awkward refueling and their limited cargo capacity and non existent towing capacity will ensure strong public RELUCTANCE to embrace your electric Toy machines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And of course our bankrupt govt will not be in a position to bribe us into accepting the costly vehicles either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well...........just another FAILED LIE-beral policy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trudeau vows to help get GM workers 'back on their feet' as automaker stands firm on Oshawa closure

Quote:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today the federal government will do what it can to help laid-off GM workers in Oshawa "get back on their feet," while federal Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains said Ottawa stands ready to assist those workers any way it can.
But both federal and provincial governments are signalling there's little they can do now to save a key component of the company's Canadian operations as executives pursue a global shakeup in response to slumping auto sales.
"I talked to the president of GM last night. The first thing I said is, 'What can we do? What do we have to do?'" Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters this morning. "And he said, 'The ship has already left the dock.'"
Both Bains and Premier Ford seemed resigned to the plant's closure Monday. When asked if there was anything the federal government could do to convince the Detroit-based automaker to shift production of another vehicle to the factory, Bains said the closure is part of a larger "global restructuring plan" that will see similar facilities in Michigan and Ohio close.
"We're willing to engage and work with them but they've been clear about their position," Bains, the government's lead on the automotive file, told reporters in the foyer of the House of Commons this morning. "We're very, very disappointed with the news ... Personally, I'm very, very hurt by this. To see this plant close is devastating."
GM confirmed Monday it would close its Oshawa plant in 2019, throwing about 3,000 unionized people out of work.
The plant makes the Chevrolet Impala, a once-popular vehicle that has seen its sales crater in recent years as consumer tastes shifted away from small and midsize sedans toward bigger vehicles like pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles.
While Premier Ford said it seems GM can't be convinced at this point to save the plant, federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said the House of Commons should immediately call an emergency debate to flush out possible options for rescuing the plant.
"This announcement is only a few hours old and I don't want to give up the fight today. I don't want to say, on day one of this announcement, 'OK. That's it,'" Scheer told reporters in Toronto. "Surely to goodness we can find something to point to protect these jobs."
Scheer did not offer any concrete suggestions of his own to help workers now facing unemployment in a year's time.

Don worry about it- Oshawa is a relatively small place with some big advertising!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But the unhappy truth for Durham Region is that it has so little other industry to fall back on!

In most regions around the GTA- about one third of the population leaves their district each day for work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is in stark contrast to Durham Region where TWO THIRDS of the population leaves the Region for work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Residential Property taxes in Durham Region are some of the highest in Ontari-owe- thanks to that general lack of industry to pay extra taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or to provide jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one good reason why LIE-beral electric TOY car will not catch on in Durham Region- they do not have suitable range!!!!!!!!!!

MPAC- the property assessment weasels were supposed to rectify that property tax disparity but somehow all they did is create excuses for high Durham taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While Toronto still has the lowest residential property taxes going- and still gets ten bucks in transfer payments from the province per citizen compared to one dollar per citizen in Durham Region!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the plus side- people living in north west Oshawa will be sleeping better at night since Gm will not continue to be "breaking airport curfew" by flying in "essential parts" in the middle of the night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is that fat tub of shit Doug Ford doing?

"They told me straight up there's nothing we can do," Ford said on Monday, after GM confirmed that the company will stop producing cars and trucks at the major plant east of Toronto.

Yes- I am sure Our idiot Boy will be just as helpful this time around as LIE-beral Dalton McGinty was in 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McGinty offered up $100 million dollars for retraining of laid off auto workers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then McGinty hung so many strings and conditions on his "help" that only 5 percent of the money was ever used!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-beral "bait and switch" is the order of the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO HOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did you ask the question if you had an answer available??????????????????????????

And considering the BILLIONS of dollars that McGinty LIE-berals either loaned at ultra low rates- and sometimes out right GIFTED to General Motors in 2008 - is it not worth asking if we can afford to BRIBE GM any further??????????????

And shall we recall that Harper Conservatives were slammed by LIE-berals for not offering up MORE BRIBES to auto companies in 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And then later- LIE-berals WHINED that Conservatives had given away too MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you were honest and knew how little property or corporate tax Gm or Ford or any of them really paid us - even a shameless LIE-beral supporter like you might be blushing with shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The LIE-beral fix is IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Auto worker jobs are certainly useful- but the LIE-beral business model might as well cut out the middle man and just pay CAW workers to stay home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think of the greenhouse gas emissions that would be curtailed if auto workers stayed home- and we know LIE-berals WANT to kill modern industries with their carbon tax anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not like there is any shortage of motor vehicles in Canada!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And hey- Wynne-bag LIE-berals just GAVE Honda one hundred million dollars last spring to expand their Alliston plant- you would not want that money to go to waste would you????????????????????????

And what does a one billion dollar govt gift buy in these troubling times???????????????

Bombardier was given a BILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR by Our idiot Boy Justin- and yet Bombardier STILL HAS NOT delivered all the Toronto street cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But then we should note that Bombardier has been busy TAKING BACK 69 of the new cars FOR REPAIRS to the crap welding job they did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is the problem with those dirty LIE-beral deals- they dont last thansk to being suckered by fast buck artists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And just look at the LIE-beral green energy mess -those "great" contracts signed and then Samsung did not honour the deal- and instead of killing the mess- LIE-berals re-negotiated it and left billions on the table for Samsung to pick up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But the Conservative method - of keeping taxes low and attracting long term investment is more fiscally sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But LIE-berals do not approve of the Conservative low tax route because it makes it hard to BUY VOTES -inless there are dirty back room deals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me remind you yet again Hoid- that ALL LIE-beral policy is FAILING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-beral policy is spinning in circles like nasty turds in a flushed toilet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GM is getting subsidies and tax breaks and is closing plants.

Giving them nothing is going to entice them to keep them open?

Today General Motors announced they are restructuring their global business. As part of that restructuring, they plan to shut down production at five facilities in North America and reduce their salaried workforce by 15%. This will include a quarter of their executives.
GM believes that new technology is the future:
“GM’s (GM) new motto is “Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion,” signaling a shift to self-driving, electric vehicles. But the restructuring is also about making cars people want now. Customers are increasingly shunning sedans in favor of SUVs and hatchbacks.
The company said the plan would make it more efficient, saving $6 billion a year by the end of 2020. GM said its slimmed down production plan would allow it to share technology across all of its vehicles and reduce the amount of time and workers it takes to build cars.”1
The following plants, who made the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Cruze, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Cadillac CT6 and XTS, are set to close:
  • Hamtramck, Detroit
  • Oshawa, Ontario;
  • Warren, Ohio;
  • White Marsh, Maryland;
  • and Warren, Michigan.
They also plan to close three plants outside North America by the end of 2019.
