Prince Harry today paid tribute to those who were killed trying to cross the Berlin Wall into West Germany from East Germany.

The third in line to the Throne laid a wreath in Berlin's Bernauer Strasse - which contains one of the few remaining sections of the barrier.

Between 1961 and 1989, 136 people were killed trying to cross the Berlin Wall into West Germany.

The Prince travelled the 577 miles from London to Berlin after attending a pre-Christmas lunch with his grandmother, the Queen, and 50 members of his extended family at Buckingham Palace.

Also at the dinner was Kate Middleton, who will become the newest member of the Royal Family when she marries Prince William in April, becoming Princess Catherine and eventually, at an unknown date, Queen.

She was with her fiance at the dinner.

Harry, 26, told a German newapaper that he was 'enormously pleased' about William's engagement to Kate, adding that she was a welcome addition to the Royal Family and praised her as the "sister I always wished for."

Tribute ... Prince Harry

PRINCE Harry has paid tribute to the people killed trying to escape communist East Germany across the Berlin Wall.

The 26-year-old prince on Sunday laid a wreath at a memorial in the German capital's Bernauer Strasse - which contains one of the few remaining sections of the barrier.

It was accompanied by a message that read: "For all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of freedom. Harry."

Researchers estimate that 136 people were killed while trying to cross the Berlin Wall between its building in 1961 and 1989, when East Germany opened its border.

Harry earlier Sunday visited the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of Germany's Cold War division and its reunification.

He was honoured for his charity work at a television gala Saturday night.
