WOODSTOCK, Ont. -- A Bright, Ont., turkey farm and five of its employees have been charged following allegations of animal abuse in a video released in March.
The video, released by an animal rights group Mercy for Animals Canada, allegedly shows employees of Hybrid Turkeys kicking, throwing and beating turkeys, prompting a joint investigation by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (OSPCA) and the Ontario Provincial Police.
The OSPCA laid charges against Hybrid Turkeys, one of the largest turkey breeding companies in the world, and five of its employees under the Ontario SPCA Act.
The charges include one count of failing to provide care necessary for general animal welfare, one count of failing to provide adequate medical attention, three counts of permitting distress, two counts of failing to kill an animal by a method that is humane and minimizes pain and distress, and four counts of causing distress by killing an animal in a manner that causes suffering.
Hybrid Turkeys issued a press release Thursday saying the company is reviewing the charges and, since the release of the video, has completed an independent audit of its facilities and introduced a pilot project of video monitoring the killing of its animals.
"Our third party audits have been completed with overall strong results, reconfirming our longstanding commitment to animal welfare," said Dr. Helen Wojcinski, manager of science and sustainability for Hybrid Turkeys, in a press release. "We continue to explore and implement new steps to improve the welfare of animals in our care."
The case is set to be heard in a Woodstock court Aug. 13.
