Premier Doug Ford’s former chief of staff has abandoned a defamation lawsuit against MPP Randy Hillier.
“Mr. French is grateful that Mr. Hillier has taken down the defamatory tweets,” said a statement supplied Monday by Gavin Tighe, French’s attorney. “Given that Mr. French is no longer involved with government and there were never any monetary damages sought by Mr. French personally (as all damages would have been donated to charity as set out in the statement of claim), there was little point in carrying on with expensive and time consuming litigation.”
French, who left Ford’s office after it came to light that some friends and family members obtained key government postings, had alleged that Hillier defamed him in a series of tweets that followed the maverick MPP’s boot from the PC caucus.
Hillier argued the information was already in the public domain.
The lawsuit had sought damages of $100,000 to be donated to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Lanark County, in Hillier’s riding.
Hillier, now the Independent MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, said the libel claim was withdrawn without costs.
“I had a high degree of confidence that I would be successful, but I’m pleased that it doesn’t have to go any further,” Hillier said Monday. “I think that speaks volumes.
The MPP was suspended and then removed from the PC caucus in March after he was overheard saying, “yada, yada, yada” while an NDP MPP questioned the government about autism services.
Hillier said he directed the comment at NDP MPP Monique Taylor, not the protesting parents in the public gallery.
The PCs said it was disrespectful, and accused the MPP of not showing up for caucus meetings and retreats.

French is now gone from the premier’s office, but Hillier still isn’t showing any enthusiasm for a return to the PC fold.
“There were a series of negotiations when I was suspended from caucus,” Hillier said. “Those conditions and terms were not acceptable to me. I rejected them.”

That would ahave been bigly in the news during our federal election and the Ford Pinto government has already become a major (perhaps fatal) liability for Scheer. French would have been "politely" asked to amscray.

I wonder how big a cheque was cut in the Premier's office?
