MONTREAL — A small community in Quebec has entered the Guinness World Records — with not one but two exclamation points.
The municipality of Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha!, located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, finds itself on page 161 of the 2018 edition of the book of records.
It is being recognized as the only community in the world with two exclamation points in its name.
Mayor Sonia Larrivee said she found out about the distinction for the town, which is located about 250 kilometres northeast of Quebec City, when she checked social media on Tuesday.
She said she has no idea who would have advocated on behalf of the 1,400-person community, which was named in 1874.
According to the province’s toponymy commission, the haha part of the name is an archaic French word for an unexpected obstacle or abruptly ending path and may refer to nearby Lake Temiscouata.
“It’s great visibility for the municipality and by extension, for the Temiscouata region,” Larrivee said. “It’s certain that it sparks the interest of people coming through here — the two exclamation points are rare.”
She said she often sees tourists stop to snap a photo in front of the signs for the town.
“I often see licence plates from abroad stopping along the highway,” she said.
Elizabeth Montoya, a spokeswoman for Guinness, said in an email that it’s the first time the Quebec town has appeared in the book, under the record “most exclamation marks in a town name.”
She said the record category was flagged by an independent consultant.
The paragraph describing the record mentions a handful of place names with a single exclamation mark: the seaside village of Westward Ho! in Great Britain and briefly, a town in Ohio.
“But the only town with two exclamation marks in its name is the Canadian municipality of Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha!,” the entry reads.

Britain's got Westward Ho! in Dorset, which is named after Charles Kingsley's 1855 novel.
