Animal activists everywhere are horrified.
Researchers in China angered animal rights activists after it was discovered they were using live pigs as crash test dummies, Daily Mail reports.
The experiments conducted by the researchers involved strapping the pigs into crash test seats with different seat belt configurations and then crashing them into a wall at speeds between 30 and 50 km/h.
Of the 15 pigs used in the experiment, seven were killed with the remaining pigs suffering grotesque injuries ranging from broken bones, severe lacerations, and internal bleeding.
Using pigs in high-speed crash test simulations is not new, they were used in the United States until a ban ended the practice in the ’90s.
Animal activists have come out against the “cruel” practice utilized by the researchers.
“Letting intelligent and sensitive animals like pigs crash into walls in high-speed tests in China is simply cruel,” PETA spokeswoman Anne Meinert told the German newspaper Bild.
Meinert said the pigs who were killed would have experienced “horrible deaths.”
The study claims the immature pigs, just 70 to 80 days old, were chosen because they correspond “to children aged six years old.”
However, Renate Kunast of Germany’s Green party told Bild that advanced crash test dummies can act as a viable alternative to using pigs. The advanced crash test dummies can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars but they record data that measures the crash’s impact.

Researchers claim the experiments were approved by an ethics committee and adhered to U.S. guidelines for the use of laboratory animals.
The pigs were not fed for 24 hours before the test, denied water for six hours, and given an anesthetic before the simulation to reduce “excitement and stress.”

NOTE- the pigs were given an anesthetic BEFORE being strapped in for that last ride!

Anybody who knows much about pigs will know they had to be UNCONSCIOUS

in order to get them strapped in properly!

Unconscious definitely LIMITS the suffering!

If you aint awake and feel nothing - how bad is it?

PETA LOONS simply object to animals being used in ANY TEST PROCEDURE!

Yes- just rather more "TENDERIZED" than usual!

I have no particular concern with animals being used for testing

JUST SO LONG AS THEY ARE GIVEN PAIN KILLERS FIRST!

Ideally the test creature should be TOTALLY UNCONSCIOUS and never feel a thing!
