Immigration officials want to prosecute parents who illegally cross border with children, a change that would divide more families
In a memo outlining the proposal that was obtained by The Washington Post, officials say threatening adults with criminal charges and prison time would be the most effective way to reverse the steadily rising number of attempted crossings.
If approved, the zero-tolerance measures could split up thousands of families, although officials say they would not prosecute those who turn themselves in at legal ports of entry and claim asylum. Federal officials say 67 percent of migrants who claimed asylum in the first quarter of this fiscal year crossed the border illegally.
