LNG...

Would the entirety of Howe Sound need to be evacuated if an oil tanker leaked like if an LNG tanker leaked?

Potash...

How about a potash bulker and their daily trips in and out? What would happen to Barnet and Burrard inlets if one of those puppies sank?

The hypocrisy is mind blowing.

Hunh. . . Indun wisdom say white man need oil. Indun need too, to run pickup truck. . . of my people!

Indun also love spirit of buffalo, spirit of deer, spirit of grass, spirit of tree.

Safest way to transport oil is pipeline. Saves buffalo, deer, grass, trees.

Hunh. We will smoke the pipe and think on this, while wannabes smoke crack pipe and squeal.

Think mebbeso problem is with pipes, not pipelines.

That's not a question. That's a fact. Pipelines have the lowest spill per liter transported rate of any of the transportation methods.

I too would like to see B.C. shut off and denied oil for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was getting at BC opening up a 2nd shipping port with inroads to the interior as the southern route is about maxed out so any growth means less goods make it to the interior.

The resulting dose of reality might sober them up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plastic pellets should not be classified as a 'dangerous good' as a spill is easy to clean up. Pipelines probably have fewer accidents per year than airlines.

But that shut off will NEVER HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are putting a bottleneck in their own revenue stream. The PM could declare it to be a national emergency and then the army puts it's through. They are not known for their environmental concerns.

For one thing Our idiot Boy Justin is such a dedicated SOVIET style socialist that he is prepared to seriously compromise our economy just so he can help the socialist economic basket case Venezuela by making sure we keep buying from them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is your first blatant piece of false information. The business with them is through subsidiaries of the sane oil companies that do business in Canada. We buy from other places to prop up those companies, the US does the same thing. The 'special coal' they import and burn is the same thing rather than they need that coal to burn cleanly. That ash is just as toxic. Bag it up in plastic and drop it in a trench in the ocean.

In addition Our idiot Boy HATES YANKEES so badly that he is willing to risk destroying our economy by screwing up NAFTA negotiations with his anti Yankee bigotry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PM Martin and PM Harper were big on the Canadian Government doing what is right as it fits the plans of big biz. What it did or didn't do to the Canadian economy was not on the list of 'important things'. You are cluing in that we are getting screwed, you are under the illusion there is a direction we can turn where that doesn't happen.

Our idiot Boy is so anti Yankee that he would rather destroy our economy than allow Yankee oil companies to profit from the Cdn oil patch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canada is a backwater subsidiary of the US. Too poor without the natural resources to be worth long term development. People within a few hundred miles of the border go south when given the chance, Canada is to the north.

It is for the above reasons that Our idiot Boy WILL NEVER ALLOW Kinder Morgan pipeline to be built!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some interesting thoughts that should be considered as we watch our LIE-beral overlords flounder around trying to create an electric Toy car business:

Here is an article that LIE-berals will find awkward. With some comments of my own in brackets):

GUEST COLUMN: It's capitalism, not big government, that improves environment

By Matthew Lau

The common refrain of climate-concerned Liberals, to justify massive government interference of commerce and wasteful environment subsidies and spending, is that “the environment and the economy go together.” Carbon taxes, stricter fuel regulations, restrictions on international trade – all these things, we are told, will bring both economic and environmental benefit.

(WE now have more than enough evidence to state emphatically that LIE-beral carbon crap only benefits LIE-berals and their allies; and their carbon crap only cleans cash from wallets and leaves the dirt in the air!)

The federal government recently announced its “Low Carbon Economy Challenge.” More than $500-million in corporate welfare and other spending was justified as part of a plan to ensure “a safe climate, healthy environment, and prosperous future.” When Liberals announce millions of dollars in unnecessary costs for taxpayers, consumers, and private industry, the country becomes richer and the environment becomes cleaner. Amazing!

(Is it not ODD that Wynne-bag Ontari-owe LIE-berals began their implementation of carbon credits by EXEMPTING the 150 biggest companies in Ontari-owe? Just as in Europe- a carbon tax is a job killer and the LIE-beral version which is so closely modelled on the European version- will result in the new tax being paid
ONLY by small biz and ordinary people! While tax revenue from carbon crap will be used to maintain the LIE-beral gravy train for their pals!)

There is, however, a major problem with the Liberal narrative. It’s that in the past few centuries, mankind (or peoplekind, according to the Prime Minister) has become spectacularly richer while the environment has become far cleaner. This happened even before Justin Trudeau, Rachel Notley, and Kathleen Wynne arrived on the scene to carbon-tax-and-spend humanity into prosperity and cleanliness.

What is the source of the material prosperity and environmental cleanliness we enjoy today? The answer is capitalism, trade, and fossil fuels – not government control, taxes, and subsidized solar power. For example, cities were cleaned by the invention and widespread use of automobiles, which rid the streets of horses and manure that attracted flies and disease. The invention of refrigerators improved cleanliness by curtailing bacteria growth in food. The window screen – another product of private industry – keeps homes clean from insects.

And then there’s soap. A couple centuries ago, soap was homemade, and involved boiling water mixed with ashes mixed with fat over an open fire for hours. Most people bathed only once monthly and rarely washed their hair. When they did wash, the soap left residue after being used. Today, thanks to profit-driven businesses, the quality of soap is much better and is affordable even for the poor – though not in socialist Venezuela, where people are dying because even some hospitals have no soap.

On a larger scale, the story is the same – capitalism cleans. In the 1980s, the Communist world suffered far worse pollution than the free world. The United Nations declared East Germany the most polluted country in Europe and Greenpeace said it was the most polluted in the world. According to a Fraser Institute study from 2014 examining more than 100 countries over the span of a decade, the most economically free countries “experience much cleaner air quality” than the countries with the least economic freedom.

Of course, government does have some responsibility to constrain pollution. Property rights and a justice system that protects people from damage to their person and property are important both for environmental protection and economic growth. But when government oversteps these boundaries with arbitrary and wasteful subsidies and regulation, the economy and environment both suffer.

Some people might point to global warming as a failure of free markets. However, as economics professor Don Boudreaux has explained, the alleged consequences of global warming – filth, starvation, and shorter life expectancy – “are not the recent consequences of climate change. They are the ages-old consequences of persistent and widespread poverty.”

(LIE-berals are right to be concerned about climate change! The problem is that NO LIE-beral policy or program ADDRESSES climate change in any effective way! LIE-berals REFUSE to take REAL action on climate change because it might cost them VOTES from Hogs)

(LIE-berals want to blame climate change on the waitress who drives her car home after finishing her late shift because she does not feel safe on the streets late at night thanks to LIE-beral judges and their “catch and release” handling of career criminals!)

(LIE-berals want to punish people who regularly drive because they live in places not well served by public transit! LIE-berals do not care that you cannot find a decent place to live near your work because the available options either cost too much since you cannot afford to bid against civil service union Hogs or because you do not wish to live in or near TCHC slum landlords with their collection of tenant pimps, criminals, prostitutes and drug addicts!)

(LIE-berals blame the waitress while IGNORING the masses of gravy train riding civil service union Hogs ripping through the countryside on atv`s and snowmobiles and Sea-doos! And LIE-berals blame car drivers for pollution while ignoring the electrically powered compressed air bubble systems that run 6 months per year and prevent ice from forming around the valuable cedar docks of Hog cottagers!)

(LIE-berals IGNORE the evidence that CONDEMNS airplanes for providing the MAJOR CONTRIBUTION to global warming- while also ignoring the reality that it is overpaid Hogs who do most of the flying!)

(LIE-berals do not to discuss the fact that air quality across the planet IMPROVED in the year after the 9/11 terror attack when 25 percent of the world airline fleet was grounded! LIE-berals also ignore the compelling evidence that “contrails” those white lines of water vapour produced by high flying jets are the LEADING CAUSE of global warming!)

(Yes- LIE-berals refuse to discuss the truth- that the quickest way to reverse global warming is to cut back on gravy for Hogs! WE know that those with the biggest carbon foot print are also those with the highest wages and Hogs consistently get at least ONE THIRD HIGHER PAY than other Cdns! And of course Hog pension are so lavish that it is ILLEGAL for citizens in private companies to get such a rate of return on pension investment as Hogs are entitled to!)

Across countries and over time, the consequences of widespread poverty were conquered only when and where societies embraced capitalism and trade. Boudreaux therefore concluded that “the worst environmental calamity is the absence of capitalism.” The evidence shows this to apply to climate calamity, too.

According to environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg, the death risk from climate-related disaster has plummeted 99% in the past century. Surely these happy results cannot be attributed to the climate-driven economic interventions enacted by modern politicians.

Matthew Lau is an economics writer in Toronto and a contributor to Canadians for Affordable Energy.

(LIE-berals are clearly NOT driven by climate change issue! Rather, LIE-berals use climate change issues as a false front for their selfish and irresponsible mouldy green SCAMS!)

(The LIE-beral implementation of mouldy green renewable energy projects in Ontari-owe DID NOT lead to cleaner air here- for the simple reason that mouldy green energy is so unreliable that natural gas fired electrical generators MUST be kept fully fired up- 24/7- and ready to take over the very instant the sun stops shining or the wind fails to blow as expected!)

(LIE-berals claim they are helping the environment by converting 2 coal fired plants to burn natural gas instead- and one must agree that it is a help- though it is A DROP IN THE ATMOSPHERIC BUCKET since natural gas is still a fossil fuel- though cleaner than coal!!!!!!)

(If LIE-berals were animated by climate concern rather than the pursuit of gravy- then WHY did they buy into a Yankee electrical generating company that USES COAL generators?)

(If LIE-berals were truly the environmentalists and spound money managers they CLAIM to be, then why are they DUMPING water- meaning diverting water AWAY from hydro dams im order to make room for their mouldy green and very costly wind and solar power?)

(LIE-beral environmental policy is a TOTAL FAILURE- that only cleans cash from wallets and leaves the dirt in the air!)

Liberals and Conservatives bicker over who’s the bigger pipeline champion

Quote:

OTTAWA—Who’s better at building pipelines?
That question has become a major point of contention for federal Liberals and Conservatives, as the expansion of the government-owned Trans Mountain pipeline is stalled and the political parties enter prolonged campaign mode ahead of next year’s general election.
Team Trudeau points to the record of pipeline construction when Stephen Harper was prime minister. They say the Conservatives failed to pave the way for new pipelines to all-important markets overseas, where higher prices are available for Canadian oil. The Tories fire back that the Liberals are botching the approval of new resource projects and contend the climate for construction was better when they were in charge.
Witness this statement from the office of Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi this week: “The previous government cut corners at every turn. They disregarded environmental concerns and they ignored Indigenous peoples. The result — not a single kilometre of pipeline built to overseas markets.”
Now listen to Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, who spoke to reporters that very same day: “The facts speak for themselves,” he said. “Our previous government completed four major pipeline projects during our nine years in office, including two that included access to tidewater.”
OK, then. What should we make of that?
Martin King is an analyst in Calgary with the firm GMP FirstEnergy. He brushed both claims off as arguably correct, though ultimately misguided.
“Both right, both wrong — and they’re arguing about the wrong thing,” King said.
First off, it’s true that four pipelines were built when Harper was prime minister. The two with “access to tidewater” are the Trans Canada Keystone line and Anchor Loop expansion.
King said it’s technically true that oil flowing through the Keystone line may ultimately end up at an ocean. That pipeline, which began pumping oil in 2010, runs from Hardisty, Alta. to Steele City in Nebraska. From there, oil can be shipped through a connecting line to Oklahoma, and then into a third pipeline to the Gulf Coast.
“In the truest sense, there is access to tidewater,” King said, although it is by no means a direct connection.
A similar case can be made for the Anchor Loop. That line was built in 2008 as a way to pump more Alberta oil through the Trans Mountain pipeline, the decades-old transmitter that runs from outside Edmonton to Burnaby, B.C. The Anchor Loop is a second pipeline installed next to the old one, which runs 158 kilometres from Hinton, Alta. to just west of Mount Robson in the Rockies.
So, while the Anchor Loop itself doesn’t go to the coast, it allows the broader Trans Mountain system to carry more oil to tidewater, bumping its capacity from 260,000 barrels of oil per day to the current 300,000.
But King said the Liberal case — that no pipelines were built to overseas markets — is buttressed by the fact that no major direct link from the oilsands to the ocean was constructed when Harper was in office.
“A direct Canadian link of large capacity to tidewater? No that is not the case,” he said.
That said, King and others dismiss this discussion as little more than a partisan squabble.
They say the real issue is that Canada doesn’t have enough pipeline capacity for the amount of oil it produces. That forces companies that dredge oil in Alberta to sell it to receivers on the other end of pipelines at a discount. They essentially have to bid on limited transit space by lowering their prices, King said.
Todd Crawford, associate director of industrial economic trends at the Conference Board of Canada, said Canadian crude is currently sold at roughly $40 per barrel cheaper than in U.S. jurisdictions that don’t have the same capacity problems.
He said the new pipelines that Scheer boasts about had a “positive impact” on this problem, but the progress was marginal considering that major Canadian pipeline proposals in recent years — Energy East, Northern Gateway and the Trans Mountain expansion project — have been abandoned or stalled.
“There’s no other honest way to characterize it: both major parties wear this,” he said.
Canadian Chamber of Commerce president Perrin Beatty said companies in Canada increasingly feel the system used to assess proposed projects like pipelines is “badly broken.” Projects languish under a cloud of uncertainty, and successive governments have been found by courts to have failed in their environmental assessments and consultations with Indigenous peoples, he said — most recently on Aug. 30, when a federal court quashed the Trans Mountain expansion approval.
The big question for Beatty is how can the government give businesses clarity on which projects are acceptable and which are not, especially in light of opposition to industries that contribute to climate change. It may be time to openly debate whether Canada wants new oil pipelines at all, he said.
“Lots of blame to go around,” he said, referring to stalled pipelines under Conservative and Liberal watch. “We seem incapable of getting it done.”
So who’s better at building pipelines?
It seems neither party’s record is very good — at least on the major pipeline projects.
But they sure want you to think their opponent is worse.

Very good article

With regard to pipelines- LIE-berals are behaving in exactly the fashion that EARNED them the nickname LIE-beral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did the Harper govt NOT buil;d any pipelines??????????????????????

BECAUSE building pipelines is the business OF OIL COMPANIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And WHY is the LIE-beral govt of Our idiot Boy the proud new owner of a partly built pipeline bought from Yankee owners at Kinder Morgan?????????????????????????????

Because Our idiot Boy is up to his neck in trouble over NAFTA and does NOT want more trouble and DOES NOT want to be seen deliberately SCREWING Yankee investors and Cdn oil workers by simply killing the Kinder Morgan project that had been approved by Harper govt!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would BE VERY HARD for Our idiot Boy to tell the world "Canada is open for business" -right after screwing the Asia Pacific trade deal and right after letting a pack of rabid bigots shut down Kinder Morgan while LIE-beals shrugged and watched in idle amusement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KInder Morgan investors had already spent $4.7 billion dollars on their pipeline and you cannot whine about fair NAFTA deals for Canada and then screw Yankee pipeline investors by shutting down their projects.........

WITHOUT being publicly exposed as a MORON over his deliberate anti Yankee stance on national security issues that are the REAL REASON for the stalled NAFTA TALKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And anybody who has listened to the speeches of Our bigoted idiot Boy Justin KNOWS he is quite prepared to ruin the Cdn economy just so long as he gets to thumb his nose at Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And anybody who has examined LIE-beral policy KNOWS that if Our idiot Boy wins the election in 2019 - he will take it a carte blanche to DESTROY the Kinder Morgan pipeline!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kinder Morgan WILL BE BUILT - RIGHT AFTER Our idiot Boy and his moronic minions hit the unemployment line!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not TMPL this could take down the NDP Gov. in BC

2 of 5 investors grant final approval for $40B LNG Canada project

Quote:

Two of the five primary investors in a proposed liquefied natural gas project in northern B.C. granted their final approval Friday for the development, bringing Canada's first major LNG project one step closer to becoming a reality.
PetroChina and Kogas, of South Korea, have both announced their readiness to move forward with the $40-billion investment led by the joint venture LNG Canada.
If approved, the project would see the construction of a 640-kilometre pipeline to transport natural gas from Dawson Creek in northeastern B.C. to a brand new processing terminal on the coast in Kitimat, where the gas would be processed into liquid for export to overseas markets.
Kitimat Mayor Phillip Germuth said in an interview he was surprised but happy after hearing about the decision.
"There's more smiles in the community, and everyone is looking forward to what the future might bring," said Germuth.
"We're really looking forward … to being the LNG capital of Canada."
Germuth believes the project will bring economic benefits to Kitimat similar to the construction of the Alcan aluminum smelter built there in the 1950s. Indeed, housing prices in Kitimat are already rising in anticipation of the project's approval.
Signs look positive
Patti Schom-Moffatt, a spokesperson for LNG Canada told CBC News the other three investors in the venture — Malaysia's Petronas, Royal Dutch Shell, and Japan's Mitsubishi Corp. — still need to give their approval for the project to move forward.
But there are signals pointing toward the project being built.
Last week, Houston-based Civeo Corp. was awarded contracts to supply temporary work camps at four locations along the Coastal GasLink pipeline route on the condition that the LNG Canada export terminal is built.
Analysts saw this as a sign that the project is headed toward a positive investment decision.
The CEO of Shell called the project "promising" in the company's second-quarter conference call in July, but said Shell is still studying the project to ensure it is financially competitive and, longer term, carbon competitive, particularly in comparison with opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico.
The chief executive of LNG Canada has previously said the company was committed to starting construction this year.
Meanwhile, Germuth is hoping for a positive decision from the remaining investors soon.
"We're hoping that in the next week or two all of that comes into fruition," Germuth said.

LNG struggling in Canada

There is widespread support from Canada's energy sector for the project.
The LNG industry has struggled to take off in British Columbia, but is booming in the United States, where billions of dollars are being pumped into natural gas pipelines and LNG facilities.
Canadian producers say a positive final investment decision for the Kitimat-based LNG Canada project could eventually encourage others to follow suit, creating the demand needed to soak up Western Canada's glut of natural gas.
But even if investors decide to move forward, the project is not guaranteed.
B.C. Green Party Leader pledged in January to bring down the NDP government if Premier John Horgan pursues the development of the province's LNG industry. A spokesperson for the party said at the time Weaver is concerned about keeping the province within emissions targets.
Since then, Weaver has said he won't vote against it if the government's overall climate plan is satisfactory.

If the protests get out of control and precedent being set, does JT buy this out as well to get it done Lol

It doesn't matter to me if it stays in the ground. AB has enough lines that staying warm won't be an issue no matter how cold it gets. Canad give more to the oil companies than anybody, showing we are the stupidest people on the planet is not something I am cheering on. It's like claiming the title for how wide you spread your own ass while being raped.

Feds won't appeal pipeline decision

Quote:

OTTAWA - The federal government will not appeal the court decision that tore up cabinet approval for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and is appointing former Supreme Court justice Frank Iacobucci to oversee a new round of consultations with Indigenous communities.
Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi says the government does not intend to start the phase-three Indigenous consultations from the beginning, but will use them to address the weaknesses that led to the Federal Court of Appeal decision in August.
The court found that while the government did spend several months in 2016 meeting with Indigenous communities concerned about the pipeline, those consultations were largely note-taking exercises and the government did not do anything to address the concerns that were raised.
The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion plan to triple capacity of the existing pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby, B.C., is in limbo while Ottawa attempts to fulfil requirements to consult Indigenous communities and consider the environmental impact the pipeline will have from additional oil tankers off the coast of British Columbia.
Last month, Sohi ordered the National Energy Board to go back and do a better environmental review of the risk of oil spills and the impact on marine life when the number of oil tankers in the Burrard Inlet rises to 35 a month from about five.
Sohi gave the NEB until the end of February to report back on the environmental review, but is not putting a deadline on the Indigenous consultations.
"We believe that meaningful consultation can be undertaken in a focused and efficient manner," he told a news conference today.
"We are not going to put a timeline on these consultations because we feel that it is our duty to faithfully engage with the Indigenous communities to get this right."

Stupid if you ask me should appeal to get rid of this precedent setting decision

It set no precedent - it merely said that the proper process was not followed.

You cannot approve it without considering the maritime impact.

Let the scientists perform a proper investigation and make a decision based on the findings.

The appeal widened the scope it set new precedent

If we can tap the hydro power of lefty tears and the wind power of right-wing blowhards, we'll be off fossil fuels tomorrow.

Did not widen scope or set any precedent.

Merely said the process wax incomplete.

What are they supposed to appeal?

Piss you off that there isn't something called. 'a permit to talk', lol. Gas would be $0.12/gal if corporate greed was taken out of the mix. Let's be clear about who is the fuktard here, . . . fuktard.

Don't forget all the taxes to be removed for that $0.12/gallon, and in Alberta not 1 Social program would be financed without the tax, never mind the low income kickback from the Carbon tax you said you enjoy.

A single adult earning up to $47,500 per year will receive a rebate of $200, and a couple making a maximum combined $95,000 per year will get $300.
Parents that qualify will also get up to $30 per child, to a maximum of four. Rebates will rise in 2018, in tandem with the carbon levy, to $300 for singles, $450 for couples and $45 per child.
Full rebates will go to an estimated 60 per cent of Albertans. Partial rebates go to another six per cent.
The other third – those who make more than $51,250 a year – receive no rebate at all. The rebates are calculated and disbursed based on income tax returns.

Notley unhappy no appeal on Trans Mountain

Quote:

EDMONTON - Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says she's not happy with Ottawa's decision to let stand a court decision that has stalled the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
The federal government has instead appointed former Supreme Court justice Frank Iacobucci to oversee a new round of consultations with Indigenous communities.
Notley says she understands Ottawa's view that this is the best way to break the logjam over the multibillion-dollar project aimed at getting more Alberta oil to tankers on the B.C. coast.
The Federal Court of Appeal put a hold on the expansion in August and said the government needed to assess the project's impact on marine life and further consult with Indigenous groups.
Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi says the government does not intend to start the consultations over again, but will use them to address the weaknesses the court identified.
Notley says the government should keep all options — including an appeal — open.
"Our government does not agree with the decision of the federal government to not pursue an appeal of the original decision," she said Wednesday.
"We understand that pursuing an appeal is a longer-term path towards a solution, and we understand that the path that they are pursuing right now is one that is likely to be more effective and faster.
"Nonetheless, until that path succeeds, as far as I'm concerned their job is to keep all options open."
Notley said she welcomes the renewed consultations, because they need to be done, and understands arbitrary timelines can't be imposed on them — even if that means further delays on resuming construction on the pipeline expansion.
"We expect that there may well be a delay past this summer coming up," said Notley.
"I'd like to see construction resume next year at some point, but at the end of the day we know that the constitutional obligation to consult with Indigenous people is such that it must be defined by the consultations."
Jason Kenney, leader of the Opposition United Conservatives, said Notley has failed to follow up on her promise to hold federal "feet to the fire" and get the court decision appealed.
"What is her response to the federal Liberals? Nada. Nothing," Kenney said in Calgary.
"Albertans should think there's been a failure of political leadership. There's been far too much talk and not nearly enough action."
