WALTHAM, Mass. — The actor who played Luke Duke on the 1980s television show The Dukes of Hazzard pleaded not guilty on Thursday to groping a female member of the cast of a musical he was supposed to appear in.
Tom Wopat was released on US$1,000 bail and was told to stay away from the woman after pleading not guilty to indecent assault and battery and drug possession charges. He refused to comment outside court before driving away from the courthouse.
Wopat, 65, was arrested by Waltham police on Wednesday night on a warrant on the indecent assault charge. Police said that during a search of him and his vehicle they found “two bags of white powder believed to be cocaine.”
Wopat denied touching anyone inappropriately, according to court documents. He said he flirts but did “nothing that could be considered inappropriate.”
He told police that he buys cocaine “in large quantities and uses it over time,” the court documents said.
Wopat was supposed to play Julian Marsh in 42nd Street at the Waltham-based Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston starting Thursday. But the theatre announced Thursday that a different actor would play the role.
Wopat said in a recent interview that he has played the role about 500 times.
Besides his role on The Dukes of Hazzard” an action-comedy that ran from 1979 until 1985, he has acted in other television shows and movies, is a Tony Award-nominated stage actor and is a recording artist.

NEW YORK — “The Dukes of Hazzard” star Tom Wopat says he’ll be taking time to address his ongoing struggle with substance abuse following his arrest in Massachusetts on indecent assault and battery charges.
Wopat pleaded not guilty Thursday to grabbing the buttocks of a female member of a local production of “42nd Street” he was supposed to star in. Police said they found what they suspect to be cocaine in the actor’s possession.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Wopat expressed “his deepest regrets to friends, family, and his many loyal fans” for the “unfortunate events” but denied any wrongdoing. He said he hopes his “good name will be restored” after his team investigates the allegation.
He “will be taking personal time to address his ongoing struggle with substance abuse. While death and illness in the family, combined with the intensity of his recent schedule, certainly contributed to his misstep, Tom definitely understands that sobriety is the sole course for a successful future and will take immediate steps to achieve it,” the statement reads.

Former Dukes Of Hazard star Tom Wopat has been hit with new charges of indecent assault and battery amid allegations he acted inappropriately with a minor.
The 66-year-old actor stands accused of poking a 16-year-old co-star’s bare stomach during rehearsals for a production of 42nd Street in Waltham, Massachusetts over the summer, when he also reportedly complimented her on her “nice butt” and slapped her backside with his script.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, the underage actress, whose identity has not been revealed, had been trying to ignore Wopat’s advances after he allegedly told her, “I’m a creepy old man, you’re really talented and really cute.”
A complaint was made after the rehearsal incident, and now Wopat is facing two additional charges of accosting and annoying, as well as the indecent assault and battery counts.
The teenage accuser was interviewed by police just two weeks after Wopat was arrested in early August for an alleged groping encounter with a female member of the production team, who accused the actor of grabbing her backside and sticking his fingers in between her butt cheeks.
He pleaded not guilty to those charges of felony indecent assault and battery, as well as another for cocaine possession, and was released on bail.
Days later, Wopat’s representative revealed the troubled star would be taking some time out to tackle his “ongoing struggle with substance abuse.”
In the statement, Wopat expressed his “deepest regrets to friends, family, and his many loyal fans” for what he referred to as “unfortunate events.”
He has yet to comment on the new allegations.

WALTHAM, Mass. — A former star of “The Dukes of Hazzard” television show has pleaded guilty to inappropriately touching two women in the cast of a musical in Massachusetts in which he starred.
Prosecutors say 66-year-old Tom Wopat was sentenced Friday to a year of probation after pleading guilty to two counts of annoying and accosting a person of the opposite sex.
The New York City resident was charged last August with touching two female cast members while rehearsing for “42nd Street” at Waltham’s Reagle Music Theatre.
He also received a continuation without a finding for one year after admitting to sufficient facts on the charge of cocaine possession. The drugs were found on his person during his arrest.
Wopat played Luke Duke on the popular 1980s television show.
