At least 2,250 of Canada’s veterans are homeless due to alcoholism, drugs and mental health, study finds

The federal government has — for perhaps the first time — taken a stab at estimating how many of the country’s veterans are homeless, but the report by Employment and Social Development Canada cautions the data is far from complete.

The study, dated March 2015 and released to The Canadian Press under access to information legislation, estimates that 2,250 former soldiers use shelters on regular basis, which represents about 2.7 per cent of the total homeless population that uses temporary lodging.

The figures come from a database which tracks 60 emergency shelters across the country.

Researchers found that veterans who end up homeless tend to be older than non-veterans in the same circumstances and that ex-soldiers are more prone to so-called episodic homelessness – meaning they are individuals with disabling conditions who’ve been on and off the street three or more times in one year.

The average age of homeless veterans is 52, compared with 37 in the general population and many ex-soldiers cite alcoholism, drug addiction and mental health issues as reasons for their circumstances.

The country’s top military commander, Gen. Jonathan Vance, says it’s shocking there would be homelessness among former military and says there will be a determined effort to identify those who need help before they fall through the cracks.

Sunny Ways does nothing for these people... but bringing in refugee looks good on the International stage..

I have to say, and this applies probably more in my country than yours, that i'll never comprehend a person sleeping on a cold sidewalk when there are so many lucrative churches sprinkled across the land,

This has everything to do with veteran affairs and nothing to do with refugees. Both the Cons and the Libs have been guilty of throwing our Vet's under the bus. Put blame where the blame belongs.

Actually it has very little to do with veterans as everything to do with substance abuse, mental health and the inability to force people to seek help or in many case to offer help. Homeless veterans are no different than homeless mechanics, homeless waitresses or homeless sales people.

It's time to cut all funding to mental health treatment so that we can eliminate the GST on alcohol, tobacco, the lottery, casinos, and sex workers.

That way, addicts of all kinds can finally put some money in the bank... hmmm... oh wait, they're addicts! More money in their pockets will just mean more consumption. Oh well, there goes that theory.

Considering I don't pull my opinions out of my a$$ like you and instead, base them on reality and considering I don't expound an opinion on things I do not understand yes, I am always right. That's what the silly folk find so frustrating when they disagree with me.

You can take solace in the fact that your not the first poster here that is in over his head. That's why you now have to make it about me instead of what I said. No worries, I'm used to it around here.

I would expect the numbers for the ex military to have higher incidense of symtoms than the civilian cohort.

Oh no no no, DB. cannuck is always right when he comments on a thread, because he doesn't comment on anything that he isn't an expert in. If he says it's the vet's fault, then it's the vet's fault and no one elses.

If you are suggesting I said otherwise, you are mistaken. The point is that homelessness is almost entirely caused by substance abuse and mental illness. It is also impossible to help somebody that is unwilling to help themselves until it is, for all intents and purposes, too late.

So does that mean that harper is not responsible for all the homeless vets since 1945?
