It's not the first time a Royal has been involved in a tumble at the polo – but this time it wasn’t Prince William who ended up flat on his face, but his young friend.

The future King encouraged the energetic seven-year-old to take a flying leap over a knee-high Union Jack while fooling around at a charity event yesterday.

Ready: Prince William's young companion prepares himself for the challenging high-jump

Steady: Almost at the flag ... but the height looks daunting

Lift off: William lowers the bar to give him a chance

Crash: But it's all a bit of fun

Even though the lad had little chance of clearing the obstacle, he gamely gave it a try – and inevitably ended up spreadeagled on the grass.

The Prince and his aide laughed with obvious fondness as the boy got to his feet at the Ham Polo Club in South West London, where William had been competing in the Chakravarty Cup with his team Umbongo.

William – who fell off his horse in a polo match in 2005 – had been at Trooping The Colour to mark his grandmother’s official birthday earlier in the day.
