Mikayla Raji never met her dad.
He was a cop, killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver.
But the eight-year-old proved she had true blue blood when she saw a police officer picking up dinner at a New Jersey diner.
Mikayla Raji was eating with her mom Mimi Jimenez-Raji at the Helmetta Township eatery. The big-hearted little girl spotted Officer Joseph Quinn picking up his dinner.
“He engaged in conversation with the little girl (and) unbeknownst to him, the little girl ... wanted to buy him dinner,” Chief James Craparotta of the Jamesburg Police told Inside Edition. “Mom agreed, and quietly went and paid for the dinner without the officer knowing.”
But when the waiter wouldn’t tell Quinn who paid his tab, his inner copper went into overdrive and discovered it was Mikayla.
And he found out something else.
Mikayla’s dad was Perth Amboy police officer Thomas Raji who was killed in 2008 when a drunk driver slammed into his cruiser.
“Mikayla wasn’t even born yet. Mikayla’s mom was seven months pregnant at the time,” Craparotta said. “This was just such a kind gesture by such a sweet little girl, that we felt like we needed to do something to pay-it-forward.”
And the next day, the kind cops started a GoFundMe page to raise money for Mikayla’s education.
“She said that her favourite store is Barnes & Noble, so she likes to read ... I think she’s a pretty good student and I think she’s going to go far,” Craparotta said.
Mikayla will also lead the cops on their Memorial Day parade to honour her - and her dad.
“She’s real excited about that,” he said. “She has a great deal of pride that her dad and her mom were both police officers. She supports the police and she’s just feels like we’re a part of her life – it’s part of her family.”
