A 23-year-old man stung more than 1,000 times during a quiet hike in an Arizona park might be the latest victim of Africanized killer bees.
Alex Bestler was at Usery Mountain Park with a friend on Thursday and hiking the Merkle Trail when he was attacked, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
His friend ran for shelter to a nearby bathroom.
Another man went back to the area to check on Bestler and found him lying on the ground, still completely covered by angry bees that wouldn't let him approach. Park employees were also forced back from retrieving Bestler because of the "aggressiveness of the bees," the police release stated.
A police officer was eventually able to drive through the swarm in a utility vehicle and retrieve Bestler, with thousands of bees chasing after.
Africanized killer bees have been migrating north from Brazil recently and have been blamed for a string of deadly attacks in Arizona and other states.
The area of the Merkle Trail has been closed to hikers while officials investigate.
The friend was treated for multiple bee stings and cacti punctures and has since returned to work, the release said.

I wonder if the 1,000th sting was as painful as the first or did the pain stop way before that? Legal suicide if it was relatively painless. Probably get insurance money if it is rather painful all the way through.
