High-Speed Chase Ends Badly for Tesla Police Cruiser Running on Low Battery

The last thing that Officer Jesse Hartman expected to receive during a high-speed police chase last week was a warning from his Tesla cruiser that the vehicle was just six miles from losing all power. Unfortunate for Hartman, that was the card he was dealt.

Hartman, employed with California’s Fremont Police Department, found himself reaching top speeds of 120 miles per hour on Friday, all while winding through Interstate 680 in an effort to keep pace with a suspect wanted by law enforcement officials.
During the pursuit, Hartman received a notification from the department’s Tesla Model S that it was running low on power and needed to juice up - an alert that subsequently prompted the officer to inform dispatch that he wasn’t going to be able to continue on with the chase.
“I am down to six miles of battery on the Tesla, so I may lose it here in a sec,” Hartman was heard saying in dispatch recordings obtained by local news outlet East Bay Times. “If someone else is able, can they maneuver into the number one spot?”

Note to self. DO NOT use a letric gizmo for a getaway car. Or a fire truck.
I can just hear that one on the radio:
"Comand, Engine 61. We must shut down due to low battery. Will need 6 hrs to charge."

Funny you mention that...

Battery runs empty in Tesla Model S police car in mid-pursuit

California police department says it's happy with EV overall, despite embarrassing mishap

by NICHOLAS MARONESE

A Tesla Model S police cruiser ran out of battery in the middle of a high-speed pursuit, the Fremont, California police department has confirmed.

Fremont officer Jesse Hartman radioed in that he was chasing down a “felony vehicle” but that his Model S cop car showed just six miles (10 km) of range before the battery would be empty, reports The Mercury News.

Hartman asked his dispatch to have another unit take over as pursuit lead after suggesting “I may lose it here in a second”; other gas-powered cars picked up the chase only to drop it shortly after due to the suspect’s driving getting way too reckless. The Tesla, meanwhile, had to recharge in San Jose before heading back to the station.

The terror is palpable.

It's just like the terror that went through them when. . . gasp!. . . Japanese cars started popping up in the NA market back around '70 or so.

Who is 'they'. Canada already has a company that dies that, for a lot more than mobile uses. Propane and NG also work and NG is 100 times cheaper and 20m times more accessible as you can refill at home. (most homes for the loco fuktards)

This I believe is the future of alternative fuels for mobile equipment. Solar and wind will for the most part remain with stationary low usage applications.
On the news this AM there was an article on a cruse ship that is a hybred green ship. Not sure how much use the batteries actually are aside from lighting sinc it didn't say how or when the batteries were charged. but they don't have single use straws and use such quaint items as water fountains where you can refil your water bottle. Much like when we were kids. Only hods about 500 passengers. Probably not cheap. But lifestyle choices comes with costs.

I drove one of those from Montreal to Toronto, once. I like driving cars like that, as long as they have manually transmissions. The automatic versions are as full as dishwater.
