that's fabulous...u mad?
Raises of 3.8% quietly came into effect for members of city council at the beginning of the year, making Mayor Naheed Nenshi the highest paid in the country.
Nenshi now makes just over $216,000 a year while his council colleagues now make a little over $115,000.
“What we really need to remember is we don’t set those salaries, a citizen committee sets those,” said Nenshi.
“The other interesting thing about this is that last year the average wage increase in Alberta was 3.8%, city workers got 1.8%, council members got zero, so council tends to lag a little bit ... but when you look at the long term, civic employees always make less than the average increase in Alberta, almost consistently over the last 10 to 20 years.”
Councillors were slated to get a 4.6% raise last year but instead took 0% — a move spearheaded by Coun. Andre Chabot — to set an example while negotiating with the unions representing the city’s inside and outside workers, who settled with 12.5% raises over the next four years and will get a 3.2% raise this year.
“I think if you look at what raises have been over a period to time ... it’s been equal to or less than what administration or other areas have been getting,” said Coun. Shane Keating.
“It’s easy to to state when I left my (previous job) as a prinicipal, I made more money than I do now and I worked far less, so if you’re looking at strictly the raise, does the number this year match? maybe not but last year it was extremely low and when you take the average, it works out.”
Calgary doesn’t need to have the highest paid mayor in the country to attract high level candidates to vie for the job, said Scott Hennig, vice-president of communications for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
“I think you could get away with being the third highest and still be attracting good, quality candidates to run,” he said.
Nenshi has donated his raises and a portion of his salary to charity each year and a spokesperson from his office said he is anticipating doing that again.
Coun. Druh Farrell said Calgary’s mayor is worthy of being the highest paid in the country.
“It’s one of the bigger cities in Canada ...so I would say he’s worth it seeing the amount of work he does,” she said.
The raises are doled out automatically and are set by the average increase to Alberta workers’ salaries according to Statistics Canada.
Nenshi’s salary was just over $177,000 when he was first elected in 2010 and since then it has gone up about 22%.
Council also voted during budget deliberations in November to increase their office budget by $1.5 million, allowing each councillor to hire an additional staffer.
