Harper is out at the conservative party fund who funneled the money to Scheer for his kids education

He also announced his candidacy on Twitter today. Can't say as I am surprised at the news. Personally, I don't think he's the guy to unite the party............though none of the other candidates fit the bill either. I am fast losing hope that Rona will run.

The eastern red Tories and the western conservatives really have little in common , it has been thus since at least Joe Who .

Kelly McParland: Canada could use a PM like Rona Ambrose

Just in case no one has made it clear to her yet, which seems unlikely, there are compelling reasons Rona Ambrose should quit stalling and seek the leadership of the Conservative party. She has been under pressure for some time, and is obviously torn, given that she hasn’t rejected the idea yet, even if it may not be exactly what she had in mind for the next decade or so of her life.

There’s the obvious possibility that she could become prime minister. If Andrew Scheer with all his self-imposed baggage could win the popular vote and reduce the Trudeau Liberals to a minority, a more skilled and engaging leader like Ambrose would have every prospect of toppling Trudeau and taking his place.

That wouldn’t be just a personal accomplishment, but a significant historical one. Liberals talk loftily of gender equality while measuring out cabinet seats as if producing a fudge cake, but when it comes to actual sharing of power it’s an altogether different recipe. In five Liberal leadership races over 30 years the best result for a woman is 11 per cent of the ballots cast, which Sheila Copps managed against Jean Chrétien in 1990. Copps tried again against Paul Martin in 2003 and fell to six per cent; Martha Hall Findlay drew 2.7 per cent (behind seven male candidates) in 2006; the tally fell to zero per cent against Michael Ignatieff in 2009, when no one bothered to challenge what was a done deal.

Justin Trudeau’s coronation in 2013 attracted four female hopefuls, but the most successful of them, Joyce Murray, couldn’t match Copps’s total from 23 years earlier. Talk is cheap, and Liberals have been offering debased platitudes for years while carefully harbouring power in male hands.

Canada’s only female prime minister was a Tory: Kim Campbell, chosen by the party in 1993. Ambrose would be the first woman elected to the job, a significant achievement for her, for women and for the party, enabling it to establish itself as the party that treats women as more than token pieces in a rhetorical game.

What’s more, her candidacy would be a moment to settle a question that has afflicted Tories for three decades: who are they, what do they want, where do they want to go? In Ambrose and Peter MacKay they have two quality people, one from the east and one from the west, representing distinctly different camps within the party. The two wings have co-existed uncomfortably since Stephen Harper brought them under one tent, but Scheer’s departure has re-opened the divide. MacKay, who appears to have the best shot should Ambrose decline to run, is a Nova Scotia red Tory from the Progressive Conservative school of thought; Ambrose is Alberta-born with a western perspective but free of the anchor of social conservatism that (among other things) dragged down Andrew Scheer. Both are comfortable on camera, have years of experience and proven abilities. Should Ambrose decline to run, she’d be ceding the contest, and likely the party, to a wing with the eastern roots and outlook the west struggled for years to overcome. After wanting in for so long, and working so hard to get there, do they want to surrender so much without a challenge?

Ambrose is uniquely well placed to dispose of another outdated image: that of Albertans as oil-soaked rednecks with pick-up trucks and a gun fetish, and western leaders as scowling white guys with several chips on their shoulder. She sounds nothing like Stephen Harper or Andrew Scheer, or Jason Kenney for that matter. As minister for the status of women in 2013 she channeled … wait for it …. Hillary Clinton! … in relating her views on abortion: “Mr. Speaker, let me be clear. Stealing a quote from someone I admire very much, Hillary Clinton, I believe abortion should be safe, legal and rare.”

Three years later, as interim party leader, she released a video on International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, declaring: “it’s a day on which all Canadians are encouraged to stand up against the prejudice and fear that harms so many around the world … Who you love, or how you identify should never be cause for fear or anxiety.”

How would Liberals find a way to denounce that? Imagine the prime minister arguing he’s more pro-choice than a pro-choice woman, though she’s the only one who would ever have had to face the decision. Picture him striving to out-march her in Pride parades, or dragging Ralph Goodale from retirement to post a dusty video of her voting on some same-sex issue he could denounce, even though he voted the same way?

They’d try, of course, but in Ambrose’s case they’d be striving to take down the sort of candidate they’d kill to have in their own party: accomplished, able, articulate, personable. And a woman.

Should Ambrose answer the call, it could be the catalyst to force Liberals to finally follow suit. A threatened Liberal party could soon find itself casting about for its own woman leader, and who else but the heir apparent, already designated by Trudeau as deputy prime minister in charge of all the difficult things he doesn’t want to handle. A contest between Rona Ambrose and Chrystia Freeland would be something to see: a potentially game-changing event against two women from Alberta with the opportunity to forever alter the political dynamic of a country that has long since fallen into a rut.

It would obviously be a sacrifice for Ambrose to give up a comfortable life and career for the uncertainty and strife of Ottawa, but one reason men have long monopolized power is their willingness to do so. Women won’t get the biggest jobs if they don’t put up a fight for them. And in this case the job begging to be taken.

Speaking of homophobia one of the candidates said being gay is a choice and the rest of them are outraged.

Still not sure why a so-called conservative party member can't even talk about marriage being between a man and a woman without being attacked.

Not allowed to bring anti abortion legislation forward - not allowed to say being gay is a choice?

Why would a white natty vote for these guys?
