A British woman has admitted she hasn’t eaten fruits or vegetables for more than 22 years. Now, Jade Youngman worries she could go blind because of the food phobia.
According to the Daily Mail, the 25-year-old suffers from extreme fussy eating known as avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
The disorder — which affects about 3% of the population — means she lives on a steady diet of pizza, pasta, chips and chicken nuggets. The mere sight of vegetables or fruit makes her wretch — and occasionally vomit.
Youngman said she has sought help unsuccessfully for her disorder. She fears she’ll end up like an 18-year-old man in the U.K. who went blind last fall in one eye due to his diet of french fries, chips and chocolate.
She said she’s been warned that starving her body of essential nutrients could lead to vision loss.
“The way I describe how I feel is that if someone puts a plate of fruit or vegetables in front of me, it’s the equivalent of putting a plate of dog poo down and saying, ‘Eat that,’” she said.
“It will make me vomit if I eat it. It will make me wretch and gag to have it in front of me. It’s like a physical reaction.”
