NAPANEE—May this be the final nail that ensures notorious schoolgirl killer Paul Bernardo never escapes the coffin of life in prison.
It hardly compares to the horrific crimes he’s already committed but the violent psychopath will go on trial here in October on an allegation he was recently found harbouring a homemade weapon while serving life for the kidnapping, rape and murder of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French more than 25 years ago.
Sex killers Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo.
Bernardo, 53, was charged Feb. 9 with possessing “a homemade shank composed of a screw and a pen for a handle for the purpose of committing an offence.”
This alleged infraction certainly won’t look good on his upcoming parole application. The delusional man actually has hopes for freedom — and he doesn’t want this to get in his way. So Bernardo politely asked the judicial system to accommodate his busy calendar and move up his trial.
And so they did, of course.

It was strange to see him after all these years. Scheduled to appear by video from Millhaven Institution at 9:30 a.m to set his trial date, teleconferencing troubles almost scuttled that plan.
“How long have you been sitting there, Mr. Bernardo?” asked Ontario Superior Court Justice Geoffrey Griffin, once the technical difficulties had finally been solved.
“Over an hour,” the chipper inmate smiled in reply.

Poor guy, but what else does he have to do these days?
Seated at a table in a small room, the dark-haired Bernardo appeared heavier and far older than what we remember from the 1990s when we were rocked by the handsome blond accountant’s vicious crimes.
In 1995, he was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping, forcible confinement and aggravated sexual assault in the horrific deaths of Mahaffy, 14, and French, 15.
He was later convicted of manslaughter in the death of Tammy Homolka, the younger sister of his then-wife Karla Homolka. She was also convicted for her role in all three killings but served only a 12-year prison sentence in a plea agreement widely slammed as a “deal with the devil.”
Bernardo would not be as lucky. In addition to life without parole for 25 years, he was also declared a dangerous offender and given an indefinite prison term after admitting to attacking 14 women as the Scarborough Rapist.
Kristen French, left, and Leslie Mahaffy were murdered by Paul Bernardo.
“I do believe the chances of him getting parole are somewhere between zero and nil,” says Tim Danson, lawyer for the Mahaffy and French families. “He’s one of those offenders where life will truly mean life. Having said that, we take nothing for granted.”
In 2015, the sexual sadist became eligible to apply to begin the parole process — first with escorted temporary absences and working up to day parole — but Bernardo has repeatedly postponed his hearing, torturing his victims’ families every time they struggle to prepare for the cruelty of having to face him.
“It’s gut wrenching for them,” says Danson. “We’ve had six previous dates and every one of them has been postponed, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened a seventh time. He sees this more as entertainment for himself. Psychopaths are masters of deceit and manipulation.”
Being found guilty of a weapons offence would have a “serious negative effect” on his parole hopes, notes the lawyer. So when told his trial will be held Oct. 26, Bernardo asked a favour.
“I have a parole date in October,” he explained to the judge. “I would like to have the matter handled before that, if it’s possible.”
How can we accommodate you, Mr. Bernardo? Please, let us know.
The amiable judge agreed to move it up to Oct. 5. “There you go, Mr. Bernardo,” Griffin said. “You will be brought to court in person.”
“OK, thank you, your honour,” he replied ever so politely.
How lucky for the manipulative lifer — he can look forward to an outing in the fall.

I once had employment with the Federal Government where I needed to visit several Federal institutions across Canada. I have seen Paul Bernardo in his cell at Kingston Pen in 1995.. Believe me, he was not living a cherished life. So many inmates were spitting into his cell as they passed by that they had to put plexi-glass on the bars. He passed the time of day making cassette tapes of music recorded off the radio or from his collection of tapes. He probably needed the homemade knife to stab at the rats and mice which have invaded most jails across Canada. Pest Control is very hard to do inside prisons because of the poisons used. Hospitals suffer the same type of contamination.

Sounds like a perfect place for him. Too bad we couldn't make him pay room and board too.

But his wife is free and rehabilitated.

She is free because she lied and got a pass. Rehabilitated is yet to be seen. I wouldn't want her left alone with my teen granddaughter.
