Russia Investigation: Charges have been laid

First charges filed in Mueller investigation

Washington (CNN)A federal grand jury in Washington on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment. The White House also had no comment, a senior administration official said Saturday morning.

Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.

DOJ gives FBI informant green light to testify on Russian uranium efforts
FBI informant allowed to testify on Russian uranium efforts - CNNPolitics

FBI informant in Obama-era Russian nuclear bribery cleared to testify before Congress

Nunes announces uranium deal investigation

The Justice Department on Wednesday night released a former FBI informant from a confidentiality agreement, allowing him to testify before Congress about what he witnessed while undercover about the Russian nuclear industry’s efforts to win favorable decisions during the Obama administration.

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores confirmed to The Hill a deal had been reached clearing the informant to talk to Congress for the first time, nearly eight years after he first went undercover for the FBI.

“As of tonight, the Department of Justice has authorized the informant to disclose to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, as well as one member of each of their staffs, any information or documents he has concerning alleged corruption or bribery involving transactions in the uranium market, including but not limited to anything related to Vadim Mikerin, Rosatom, Tenex, Uranium One, or the Clinton Foundation,” she said.

The committees are keen to learn what the informant knows about any Russian efforts to curry favor with Bill and Hillary Clinton, to win Obama administration approval for Moscow’s purchase of large uranium assets in the United States or to secure billions in new uranium sales contracts with American utilities.

“The FBI has informed me that they are releasing my client from his [nondisclosure agreement] so that he can testify to Congress about his work uncovering the Russian nuclear bribery case and the efforts he witnessed by Moscow to gain influence with the Clintons in hopes of winning favorable uranium decisions from the Obama administration,” Toensing said.

“He is now able and willing to talk with the congressional committees seeking his testimony, though I will be working with all parties to ensure his identity remains confidential to ensure his safety,” she added.

Russia’s uranium business drew controversy starting in 2015 when it was revealed that former President Clinton collected a $500,000 speaking fee from a Russian bank and millions more in charitable donations from those interested in the Uranium One deal while his wife Hillary Clinton served as secretary of State. Russia’s Tenex nuclear sales arm also secured billions in new American nuclear fuel contracts about the same time.

At first CNN citied unnamed sources leaked that charges would be laid.

They are desperate to be talking all weekend about the Russians screwing Queen Hillary out of her throne but I don't think they ever considered that some of her people were involved as well.....

Clinton campaign, DNC paid for research that led to Russia dossier

Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.

After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

House Panel Says Agreement Reached Over Fusion GPS Bank Records

The U.S. House Intelligence Committee on Saturday said it had reached an agreement related to its subpoena of a Washington research firm's bank records that would secure access to records for the panel's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The announcement came a day after a federal judge had given an unnamed bank more time to respond to the congressional panel's subpoena to Fusion GPS, the research outfit that hired a former British spy to compile a dossier on presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative online publication backed by billionaire Republican mega-donor Paul Singer, said on Friday it was the original funder of the Fusion GPS project to compile opposition research on multiple Republican presidential candidates, including Trump.

Trump and other Republicans have alleged that Russians paid Fusion GPS for research on their own dealings with the president and his campaign.

But the Free Beacon said all the material it was provided came from public sources and that the effort was separate from a former British spy’s dossier of allegations of Russian financial and personal links to President Donald Trump’s campaign and associates.

Known as the Steele dossier because it was compiled by former MI6 officer Christopher Steele, the document identified Russian businessmen and others whom U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded are Russian intelligence officers or working on behalf of the Russian government.

Mueller facing new Republican pressure to resign in Russia probe

More Russia bombshell revelations to come?
It was a bad week for Hillary Clinton and Democrats as revelations on their roles in the Trump dossier came to light and investigations began on the Obama-era Uranium One deal. Is this just the beginning?

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is facing a fresh round of calls from conservative critics for his resignation from the Russia collusion probe, amid revelations that have called into question the FBI’s own actions and potentially Mueller’s independence.

This week’s bombshell that a controversial anti-Trump dossier was funded by the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign has Republicans asking to what extent the FBI – which received some of the findings and briefly agreed to pay the same researcher to gather intelligence on Trump and Russia – used the politically connected material.

Hill investigators also are looking into a Russian firm’s uranium deal that was approved by the Obama administration in 2010 despite reports that the FBI – then led by Mueller – had evidence of bribery involving a subsidiary of that firm.

Critics question whether Mueller’s own ties to the bureau as well as fired FBI director James Comey now render him compromised as he investigates allegations of Russian meddling and collusion with Trump officials in the 2016 race.

“The federal code could not be clearer – Mueller is compromised by his apparent conflict of interest in being close with James Comey,” Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., who first called for Mueller to step down over the summer, said in a statement to Fox News on Friday. “The appearance of a conflict is enough to put Mueller in violation of the code. … All of the revelations in recent weeks make the case stronger.”

Outgoing New Jersey GOP Gov. Chris Christie, a former federal prosecutor and Trump ally, also suggested Friday that Mueller consider stepping aside.

“If the facts that you just laid out are true, then somebody with Bob Mueller’s integrity will step aside and should -- if in fact those facts, as you laid them out, are true,” Christie said on “Fox & Friends,” in response to various conflict-of-interest allegations.

“It is now commonly agreed, after many months of COSTLY looking, that there was NO collusion between Russia and Trump. Was collusion with HC!” he tweeted Friday.

That's considered Corporate free speech in America.

House Democrats don't want President Donald Trump's former aide Carter Page to speak before an Intelligence Committee hearing because he "might blow up their story" concerning Russian connections with the campaign, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday.

"I think the Democrats and the news media have a one-sided false story," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "I hope Carter Paige will be allowed to speak. If they refuse to let him speak, I hope they find a forum and speak without him."

Page has insisted, through a letter to the House Intelligence Committee, that he be allowed to present evidence refuting "false or misleading information" being presented about Russia and the Trump campaign, after he'd learned he may not have the opportunity to testify.

"The Republicans who run the committee ought to run this committee," Gingrich said. "This nonsense of letting the Democrats define everything when the Republicans are supposedly in charge, I don't understand it, and I think the Republicans ought to get a grip. If he wants to speak, bring him in."

Gingrich also spoke out against media stories claiming Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Kushner had tried to establish a back channel for communications with Russia.

"That entire story tells you how hysterical and deeply anti-Trump the elite media has become," he said. "The fact is, first of all, that informal communications is a deep part of diplomacy. Folks tend to forget in the Cuban missile crisis, it was an ABC correspondent meeting with the head of the KGB in Washington which created the back channel that helped us avoid a nuclear war. Nobody thought that was bad."

Obama also created back channels with Iran, and President Richard Nixon created one to China, said Gingrich, and he said he wonders if The Washington Post "has somebody with a sense of history who understands how stupid the stories have become."

"They use language like bombshell. Was it a bombshell when John F Kennedy did it? Was it a bombshell when Barack Obama did it? This is just one more symptom of the pathology of the left and the fact that they've frankly lost all touch with reality."

It is the FACTS that matter. Factual EVIDENCE is the important thing. It is not about personalities or personal"truths" which are usually biased from the tellers point of view.

In retaliation Trump inc has ordered investigations into Hillary , the email stuff again.....etc. No surprise as this kind of knee jerk revenge is his style. So Let the chips fall as they may. If there are casualties on BOTH sides.......so be it.

NO party in this mess is without flaws. What is so sad is that all this drama and the series of drams that have been the character of the current administration.......... has taken over any productivity that the government might have achieved by now. Hoping that whatever Monday reveals is FACTUALLY and evidence based.......and that Meuller will not be aborted from completing the job. (as that would be flagrant obstruction of justice )

In reality , Meuller has the real opportunity to "clear the swamp".....

Technically, Trump has not been and is not under investigation.......UNLESS the paths lead to him or some staff close to him.

The issue is that he is acting like he is.........instead of focusing on the job he was elected to do. He gets far too easily distracted by side issues and that interferes in accomplishing anything. His defensiveness is not doing him any favors .

At this point it matters little Which party will be affected ( or BOTH)......... as long as the FACTS come out and the results are evidence based.

Things could get even uglier as Trump is not concerned about how low he has to go to defend himself and his loyalists.
Totally fascinating to watch. and the world is watching too. This will indicate the amount of integrity /credibility that the US still has (as a nation). .......

Yes, that's the sad thing. You really do not want to ally yourself with him. Live and learn for her, I hope.

WRT avro, he should parachute in soon.
---

I was watching Anderson Cooper on CNN this morning and not much was mentioned about Hillary or the Dems generally. They said you could see that Trump was attempting to down play everything. The panel, citing Trump's statements about the investigation, reminded the audience that he (President Trump) believed they will not find anything.

I chuckled at the start of the show. John King said we don't know anything about the charges, what they are, who or how many were being charged, the circumstances about the charges, or even who they suspected would be taken into custody. But they managed to fill 30 minutes with speculative fiction. You have to fill your time slot with something.

I said to my wife, why don't they wait until tomorrow and deal with some facts? Surely there has to be other news to talk about. News about which they have some details, not guesses.

Apparently the protocol is not to have the news leaked. Someone on the inside let this out.

Trump has been busy with his Twitter smokescreen. He's tossing everything out there in a panic.
