McDonald’s restaurants across Canada are celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary in Canada with an offer of cheap hamburgers for a large part of Wednesday.

This may be the only event of the summer that isn’t trying to hitchhike on the Canada 150 parade.

The red-and-white announcement does look a little like a Canada 150 event. But really, this is a McDonald’s event — the 50th anniversary of its arrival in Canada, when a restaurant opened in Richmond, BC.

A classic hamburger (not a Big Mac, not a Quarter Pounder) costs 67 cents, since the chain came here in 1967. But the tax is extra. Symbolism must bow before the HST.

The deal is on from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. There’s a limit of three to a customer.
