Eyebrows were raised north of the border after an apparent gaffe made it look like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family endorsed an American excursion firm.
First noticed in 2016 and gaining traction Wednesday after photos were posted to Reddit, a roadside billboard advertising Mammoth Cave Canoe and Kayak in central Kentucky features a smiling Justin and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau — joined by children, Xavier and Ella-Grace — wearing life jackets and waving from a red canoe.

Heavily used by news outlets, a Google Image Search shows the photo was originally tweeted by Trudeau in August, 2013 to announce the impending arrival of the couple’s third child, Hadrien, who was born the following February.
As word spread of the billboard’s apparent accidental use of his family’s image, Trudeau tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the original image was taken in Yukon.

Google Street View images of the billboard along State Highway 225 which were taken in June 2015 suggest the sign was updated with the Trudeau family shortly thereafter. The Canadian Press reported Wednesday first mentions of it were posted to Facebook in 2016.
