Curio ... first thing I did was make sure that wasn't a parody. I was hoping you'd made the same error I did. :(

That is horrible. Its the same as me being forced into an anti-gay parade. I can see the Chief "encouraging" people to participate but making it mandatory is just plain wrong. Obviously being gay is no innoculation against biggotry and stupidity. It is so disappointing that one of the first women in that sort of position makes such a big mistake.

Yup Cosmo -

My niece was on her way home to San Diego - and was staying with me after visiting her family in San Francisco - she was on the internet seeing what had been happening down there and ran across this story....she was fulminating over it and said whoever made that decision did some ( I think minor) damage to gay rights. I am inclined to agree on this one....it was a bad call from a person who doesn't understand choice apparently.

Gay rights shmay rights.

If the city wants to force someone to attend a gay pride parade, thats fine. Forcing them to be sexually harassed is another matter.

Even if the firemen were gay I don't think they would enjoy that kind of abuse. And as they were officially on the Job, I think the city owes more than few dinaro's to them.

One thing I did find interesting was the law firm chosen to represent the firefighters ... their rabid right wing ethics do make me nervous. I think I'll sit back and wait till the facts all shake out before making any more comments on this.

The Thomas More Law Center is a not-for-profit public interest law firm dedicated to the defense and promotion of the religious freedom of Christians, time-honored family values, and the sanctity of human life. Our purpose is to be the sword and shield for people of faith, providing legal representation without charge to defend and protect Christians and their religious beliefs in the public square. We achieve this goal principally through litigation, seeking out significant cases, consistent with our mission, where our expertise can be of service to others. We also defend and promote faith and family through media and educational efforts. Above all, the lawyers of the Thomas More Center seek to meet the highest moral and ethical standards of our Christian faith and our legal profession.

Our ministry was inspired by the recognition that the issues of the cultural war being waged across America, issues such as abortion, pornography, school prayer, and the removal of the Ten Commandments from municipal and school buildings, are not being decided by elected legislatures, but by the courts.

These court decisions, largely insulated from the democratic process, have been inordinately influenced by legal advocacy groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) which seek to systematically subvert the religious and moral foundations of our nation. Recent examples of the federal courts’ pivotal role in the cultural war are the cases of Stenberg v. Carhart in which the U.S. Supreme Court held Nebraska’s ban on partial birth abortion unconstitutional, in effect nullifying similar bans in 30 other states and Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe which prohibited students from leading stadium crowds in prayer before high school football games.

What's next? Parades to shame people of non-white skin? Different religions? Disabilities? It's hard for me to believe this actually happens in this day and age.

I believe everyone has a right to their opinion -- even biggots -- but to turn discrimination into a public fair and march a gay man out of town reminds me entirely too much of the old lynchings of Black people in the South. Can something like that be far behind?

Small Town Holds Annual Gay Shame Parade

Sheesh!! Um can we make one HUGE distinction here? You cannot compare homosexuality to racism, hating certain genders, being disabled or any other situation where you find yourself with no choice in the matter. It is in no way the same thing!

You may (or may not) have the choice to be attracted to the same sex. But you sure do have the option as to whether or not you act on it. Same goes with pedophilia, adultery, beastiality, etc.
You don't have the choice to be black, white, asian, etc. You don't have the choice to be male or female. Most disabled persons would not choose to stay that way.

If I have a wife or girlfriend I may still like women.I don't all of the sudden stop having a libido. But My ACTIONS decide whether or not i am a cheater. If I believe in a religion that's one thing. But if my ACTIONS based on my religion result in the suffering of people I am evil.

Homosexuality may or may not be a choice. But having a sexual relationship with a person of the same sex is.

So please stop comparing homosexuality to racism, sexism, etc.. It is in no way the same thing.

So then you think targeting religions is ok as that is a choice correct? You do have to choose to be part of a religion, you can leave at any time and join another one.

So if legislation criminalizing Judaism or Catholocism came into practice, you would not consider that as bad as racism?

Homosexuality means you can't have a happy sex life (pretty damn imporant) if you don't act on it. Religion is not any more important than that to most people, and for many many, far less important (hence the high adultery rates)

Edit:

As for being sucked in, the picture immediately tipped me into onion, thats their style, and im a big onion fan.

Sigh... here we go again...I love how people just fill your mouth with words... Where did I say targeting religion was ok? In fact where did I mention targeting of anyone? Where did i mention Legislation of anything?

Ummm and as far as sex is concerned. Most religions consider spiritual things to be of way higher importance than physical (that includes sex). It kinda has something to do with the whole beliefs, values and doctrine thingy that religions have.......................... If someone doesn't believe in that that is their prerogative. If someone wants to act on their homo/hetero sexuality I could really care less. Do whatever you want.

My point was.......well I already explained my point.

In my words...so yer gay ...if you decide to not act on it it's like denying yourself a sex life... someone who was forced to have sex with the same gender and being heteral i can tell you if i had to go along with lilthp idea of gays making choices then you can say i should have enjoyed it..even though men repulse me sexually.....

does that make sense....you have a gay person and you are expecting them to not enjoy sex..they have to settle for revulsion for as long as they live....

thats like bigotry with sadistic qualities tagged onto it ......

Lithp, my bad, I read too much into it.

But you do agree that targeting homosexuality is worse than targeting religion?

Homosexuality, even if you choose not to have a sex life, still has a physical component. Religion on the other hand is usually about free will.

Therefore, by your logic, targeting someone for being jewish is not the same as racism or sexism, as you choose to be Jewish, correct?

now onion should do a follow-up story on how the Gays are retaliating with a Shame The Homophobes Parade, with acted out scenes on stage floats on various themes, like good hetero/bad hetero and such, and perhaps even recognizing one's right to be a homophobe, they could also do a good homophobe/bad homophobe skit too, with the good homophobe, of course, keeping his/her unsolicited opinions to his/herself.

re 'dike', it may have been/be a derogatory remark to some, but I agree that it's all part of reclaiming the language, just as blacks have done with the n-word.

Just as I'd like to reclaim 'gay' in its God-intended original sense, because, man, it makes for a happier life all 'round!

:?D

Ya ya Mercury ... hadda bring up that Onion thing again, didn't ya!
(hee hee)

"Gay" as in all our guy members skipping around redecorating the forum and the chicks wearing Daytons and riding Harleys? That would make for some good entertainment!

I admit I have to face the whole "gay is a choice" thing with humour. I've been down that road so many times here at CanCon that I've worn out the pavement. Search the topic here and you'll have reading enough to get you through till Christmas. Now I just enjoy the funnier side of the issue.

I'm not gay, but I respect all various sexuality .. I think that gay people is very good person .. I think so ..
Yes ... I figure that what a person does between the sheets matters less than what they do out in the world. How they treat the people around them, their sense of humour, sense of honour ... those things matter much more than what they do with their private parts! Of course some of us gay folk can be just as annoying as the heteros ... or so I've been told! ;)

I've never understood the need or desire to be "proud" of ones sexuality. Why would anybody feel proud of something they have no control over? I mean, it's not like being proud of your PhD, Superbowl ring, the 56 'Vette you remodelled or some other thing you've actually "accomplished"

As a side note, I am married and have never had a man's genitalia in my rectum nor have I ever had the desire to experience it. I have also never jumped out of an airplane with a parachute on my back nor have I ever had the desire to experience it. Who am I to say I wouldn't thoroughly enjoy either one or both.

It's too bad more people don't feel this way. In todays world so much emphasis is placed on how much of a man or how much of a woman someone is. To me this is kind of a shallow superficial attitude. Aren't we defined by more then our sexuality. If we define ourselves by our sexuality what happens when we get old and are no longer the alpha male we once were? I think the whole thing about coming out would be much much less of a deal if the world didn't place so much emphasis on what we do in the sac.

I would like to quote Paris Hilton 8O
"Some day we will all be ugly"

That Paris ... she's a font of wisdom! :lol::lol:

I so agree that everything would be simpler if we, as a society, changed our attitude. Your comment about coming out is exactly right. Because it is currently such a huge deal, coming out remains an enormous milestone for most gay people. That explains the whole "Pride" mentality. As long a there are people who want to see us go to hell in a rainbow coloured handbasket, we'll be celebrating being Gay.

I hope that in my lifetime we see "Gay Pride" move forward to "Gay Culture" or some such. I love the parades and celebrations of the individuality of the lifestyle.

Well said. Although, I have jumped out of an airplane (as well as being a dyke) and highly recommend both! ;)
