What is more important in choosing a leader??........the party affiliation or the capabilities/qualifications of the person ??? Party loyalty has limitations and can foster bias.
Party. The leader is mostly a figurehead. Also the Prez does not have near the power our PM has. Trump pretty much paid his own election expenses, unlike any other prez in recent history. Most of them and our leaders as well owe big time to the high rollers in the party. Just to run for the leadership of the Conservatives was I believe $100 000 deposit. Most people don't have that kind of change laying around. Helps prevent the grassroots from taking over the party.

That's not correct. Trump LENT his campaign the money in the early stages, and effectively paid himself back when the money started rolling in. He spent about 60 million of his own money, out of a campaign expenditure in the neighborhood of half a billion.

The three prerequisites of being a leader are ability, ability, ability!
