The unions’ desire to set the rules for hiring is part of a creeping takeover of management and government responsibility that began during the Liberal years

(With some comments of my own in brackets):
For months, Ontario’s elementary teaching union has said its unwillingness to sign a new contract is all about protecting children and public education. That argument deflated rather seriously when the union walked away from the latest round of bargaining, with its president complaining about the province’s plan to normalize how teachers are hired.
(Previously teacher HOGS went to war with Ford govt over the sex education curriculum - which many parents considered taught to much to kids who were too young - and which too strongly promoted “alternative lifestyles”!! As a parent I say that an 11 year old is too young to decide much about anal sex and that trans-gender issues are rather vague and unformed at that same age!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(I suggest that kids who are in need of advice on such subjects as anal sex and oral sex at age 11 - ARE IN GREATER NEED of responsible parental supervision - which is difficult for many parents due to the relentless need to dig up gravy for LIE-beral govt and greedy HOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Thworst of it is that teacher HOGS told us they would not have taken legal action if Ford had not ordered them to use the altered Ford curriculum - so again - WHO RUNS THE EDUCATION SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Of all the things the union could choose to cite as a deal breaker, this was probably the weakest. What union president Sam Hammond was defending is a bizarre 2012 provincial regulation that does nothing for students and acts as an impediment to hiring the most qualified teachers.
(Some Cdns will recall a phrase made popular some years back - “Passing the trash”!! Meaning BAD TEACHERS got passed on to other school boards!! This meant there was a certain amount of DECEPTION involved in giving the “Trash” good job reviews - and avoiding the reason for the layoff of the trash!! Such teachers SHOULD NOT be allowed to remain in the system simply because of union greed and seniority!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Those who don’t follow arcane education rules carefully might assume that new teachers would be hired on merit, perhaps with a nod to expanding diversity. Not in Ontario. In 2012, the Liberal government decided that hiring should be based on how long applicants had been waiting to get a job, not on principals’ judgment about who was best qualified. One union wanted this because of perceived nepotism. Now, it’s an entitlement.
(Merit is an OBSCENITY to any union since BASIC union philosophy dictates that ALL dues paying members ARE EQUAL!! Thus to single out one member for being inferior VIOLATES every value the union stands for!! It is this elephant in the room that is crippling ALL govt performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
While the idea of seniority is common once people are hired, it’s difficult to think of any other workplace where it is used as a hiring tool. The Ford government wants to fix this mess, but Hammond and his union will have no part of it. It’s not the only remaining issue, but apparently it’s more important than getting children back into schools.
(In the private sector - seniority is equated with TALENT and ability demonstrated to the BOSS!! Our union HOGS turn that basic value on its ear as they DEMAND grand new gobs of gravy from the most indebted province in the world - even as Ontari-owe student test scores DROP STEADILY!! Teacher HOGS now demand MORE GRAVY FOR LESSER PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The idea is offensive to the union because it re-introduces the idea of merit. For an old-school union like the one that represents the province’s elementary teachers, merit is a concept to be avoided at all cost. It’s all right for some teachers to get paid more than others, but only because of years of seniority or completion of courses that are said to upgrade their skills.
The idea that teachers would earn more than their colleagues simply because they are better teachers is abhorrent to the unions. That’s why it’s important to stamp out the cancer of merit at the earliest possible moment, the day of hiring, before it spreads through the whole system.
The unions’ desire to set the rules for hiring is just part of a creeping takeover of management and government responsibility that began during the Liberal years. Unions have also gained a measure of control over spending priorities and the way learning is delivered.
(TRUE DAT!! Under LIE-beral Wynne-bag - the education budget GREW FIFTY PERCENT FASTER than the health care budget - and yet THERE ARE LESS KIDS NOW IN OUR SCHOOLS while there are way more hospital patients!! Our teacher HOGS are so greedy - they are FORCING govt to ration health care!!!!!!!)
The union determination to control spending is evidenced in the other issue cited by the elementary teachers when they walked away from negotiations. They said the government is offering “less than half the priority and special education funding negotiated in 2017.”
That makes it sound like big special education cuts, but the money in question isn’t even part of the special education budget. That stands at $3.1 billion this year, up more than $90 million over the previous year. Rather, the issue is an attempt to restore a temporary sweetener the Liberals gave unions to help secure the last contract. They provided money for two years only and last year the amount was $230 million a year, to be used for special education, helping children at risk or adult education, according to boards’ priorities.
(Ah- ADULT EDUCATION- meaning money NOT SPENT on our kids - but instead lavished on illegals that many Cdns DO NOT want to come here!! Such spending is the usual LIE-beral back door approach to both HIDING and imposing policy that Cdns generally DO NOT WANT to pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The government is clearly willing to restore much of that money and has already committed $60 million to the two unions that have signed deals. There will be money in the ultimate elementary deal, too, but for now, the union is willing to close schools over a fraction of one per cent of overall education spending.
Not content to seek control over spending and hiring, unions also want a veto over how learning is delivered by rejecting the province’s proposal that two of 30 credits be delivered online. One would have thought that would be up to school boards or the education ministry.
(Unions wish to control every aspect of education - after all there is a chance that those who deliver online courses MAY NOT be part of the union and thus not be paying union DUES!! And of course numbers count - HOGS want the largest union presence possible during strikes and elections!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(In other news- Ford govt MUST start to micro-manage much of the school system in order to ensure HONEST USE of govt funding!! Ford govt is giving cash for the REPAIR of our ramshackle schools - and DOES NOT intend to stand by - as LIE-berals did - while repair cash was shunted over to the HOG GRAVY TRAIN while schools fell apart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Nor is Ford govt happy with the UNFUNDED EXTRA teacher assistants who infest the Toronto school system!! LIE-berals made allowance for a specific number of teacher assistants and one reason for TDSB fiscal problems is AN EXCESS of hired assistants as they try to booast flagging EQAO test scores!!!!!!!)
(Toronto school board is well aware of the huge BRIBES Wynne-bag LIE-berals gave to Toronto and Ford is reducing that grand gravy - so TDSB and Silly Hall allies are fighting tooth and nail to claw back every undeserved penny!!!!!!!!)

Sixty-thousand Ontario students already choose to take online courses and the number is going up by about 17 per cent a year. The provincial plan is for courses created by Ontario teachers and Ontario teachers will be able to assist students electronically. Some people are concerned about lack of internet access, but the government will have all secondary schools fully connected by September. Students who don’t have good access at home can do their work in school.

If teaching unions don’t like something, they think it’s their job to prevent it. One can see the same kind of thinking in strike actions that eliminated teacher training for an improved math curriculum and disrupted standardized tests.
(Teachers are hugely short sighted - they are prepared to produce an ill - educated generation of kids as the HOGS fight for more gravy NOW - without considering the long term employment and tax revenue situation for future dead broke tax payers!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The unions say this labour dispute is about the kids. The government says it’s about money. Really, it comes down to who should control the school system, the people you elect or the people teachers elect?
