Some people say that it was only bad during Stalin's regime and that the USSR had all sorts of good things as well and that that I was fed Western propaganda and the USSR wasn't really all that bad....... is that true?

The collapse encouraged Ukraine to be the first to secede, on 24th August 1991. This led to a domino effect: Belarus seceded the next day, followed by Moldova two days later and Kyrgyzstan four days after that. Several more left in the succeeding weeks. Russia left on 12th December followed by Kazakhstan on 16th.
There's a cautionary tale in this for the EU, with Brexit being like Ukraine's secession from the USSR. Ukraine was also the second largest member state of the USSR, just as Britain was the second largest of the EU.

My grand parents came from the Ukraine who was under the thumb of the USSR and things were not great! Starvation was the norm, labour camps were also the norm - you could be arrested based on someone else's complaint - even if it wasn't true. There was no "court" to determine your guilt or innocence - you were automatically guilty. Maybe a "bribe" will get you out of trouble but most people couldn't afford to pay anything.
I simply don't understand why people are too lazy to take the time to look up the Marxist ideology - which simply doesn't work because there is no incentive for people to work because they've been told that the "government" will look after you - NOT!! The only thing the government does is look after themselves at the expense of their citizens.
What needs to happen is the prosecuting "crony capitalism" because capitalism in and of itself isn't bad - it's the corrupt people who use it to advantage themselves and disadvantage regular folk.
Most people under capitalism do extremely well and have actually been "lifted up" under capitalism. I know because my family was extremely poor when I grew up but capitalism offered us a way out and all of us kids have done well under it.
People will NOT be better off under socialism; it's too bad they can't see what the future under socialism will yield. Not something they expected, that's for sure!!
One difference between the EU and the USSR, despite some similarities, is that the EU is anti-Socialist and large-scale governmental Socialist policies are illegal. That's why back in the Seventies and Eighties the British Left wanted Brexit. That's why Corbyn has long been a Brexiteer. Much of the modern British Left - Labour, Lib Dems, SNP - seem to have forgotten that inconvenient fact and didn't want us to leave, even though the EU would have prevented them from carrying out many of their Socialist policies. Now outside the EU, British governments are free to carry out whatever policies they are democratically elected to implement.
