Metrolinx not concerned about Ottawa LRT issues, despite having order in for the same vehicles

Metrolinx says it’s monitoring problems that have affected Ottawa’s new LRT in recent days but isn’t concerned the glitches will spell trouble for future transit projects in the GTA, despite the fact the agency plans to use the same vehicles here.

(Uh huh- Metrolinx and TTC have ALREADY done a REALLY CRAP JOB handling the purchase of TTC street cars from Bombardier!! Apparently NONE of our HOG rocket scientists noticed the SMALL PRINT in the TTC contract that allows Bombardier to deliver new streetcars basically WHENEVER they feel like it - without regard to the production schedule TTC THOUGHT was in place!!!!!!!)

(To make matters EVEN WORSE - those new Bombardier streetcars that have been delivered- will now BE SENT BACK to get shoddy frame welds repaired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Thousands of commuters on Ottawa’s Confederation Line were stuck waiting in overcrowded stations during rush hour three days in row this past week when technical failures with the vehicles, which are made by French multinational Alstom, caused major service disruptions.

(Yes- Bombardier has done such a fine job supplying street cars for San Francisco, New York and Toronto - in spite of the latest billion dollar BRIBE that LIE-berals offered - that Ottawa has wisely sought its new street cars from another source!! Its just to bad that quality seems to be such an issue with ANY govt purchase!!!!!)

According to OC Transpo, Ottawa’s transit agency, the delays on the Confederation Line Tuesday and Wednesday morning were caused by faults with the vehicle doors believed to have been instigated by passengers holding or prying them open, resulting in delays of up to 90 minutes. On Thursday morning, a train’s on-board computer had to be reset, leaving it stalled at a station and causing delays of 20 to 30 minutes.

(One must ask how cheaply made the cars are since the OLD TTC street cars and subway trains DID NOT HAVE such issues!! What is wrong with new age engineering - other than PENNY PINCHING CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The $2.1-billion line only opened Sept. 14, and the disruptions have prompted at least one local councillor to ask OC Transpo to consider shutting down the LRT until it can sort out the bugs.

(Is it not amazing how often trouble is purchased along with govt contracts?? TTC was specifically warned that its planned purchase of Presto rider cards was the most costly and least reliable of all options and TTC has proved the critics actually UNDERSTATED the unreliability of Presto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(With TTC now dealing with Fare payment losses in the multi million dollar range yearly because the machines so often fail that Presto card holders are now despairing and often riding for free when the card readers fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

The trains used on the Confederation Line are Alstom’s Citadis Spirit model, up to 46 of which Metrolinx, the provincial agency responsible for transportation in the GTA, has agreed to buy from the company.

(One wonders if French public transport companies had the same problem with doors jamming?? And was Metrolinx AWARE of the issue??????????????)

Metrolinx plans to run the Alstom cars on Mississauga’s Hurontario LRT and the Finch West LRT in northwest Toronto, which are expected to open in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

The 18-kilometre Hurontario line would connect the Port Credit GO station to Brampton Gateway Terminal, and its cost has not yet been finalized. The 11-kilometre Finch line would run between Finch West TTC station and Humber College, and cost $1.2 billion.

Metrolinx wouldn’t disclose how much it’s paying for the trains, but previous announcements suggest the 46 cars would cost about $400 million.

Agency spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said Metrolinx is keeping an eye on the situation in Ottawa, but isn’t worried.

“We’d be remiss if we weren’t watching what’s happening with other very similar projects. That’s our job, to look at and benefit from the lessons that they’re learning, and make any adjustments,” she said.

By the time the Hurontario and Finch lines open, the Alstom vehicles will have been in service in Ottawa for two to three years, Aikins noted, which will give Metrolinx the chance to “identify and address any issues.”

She said Metrolinx has faith in Alstom, which the agency turned to after encountering problems with an earlier order from Bombardier. But Bombardier disputed Metrolinx’s claims that it had fallen behind on the original order, and the two sides later reached a settlement.

(Uh huh- with Bombardier apparently thumbing its nose at Metrolinx thanks to those idiot contract delivery clauses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

“Alstom has a proven track record building LRVs (light rail vehicles) around the world and we have confidence in their work,” Aikins said.

(Bombardier ALSO HAS a “proven track record” - its just not one that is attractive to a purchaser!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Alstom is setting up a factory in Brampton to build the vehicles for Metrolinx and, according to company spokesperson Michelle Stein, assembly for the first cars for the GTA projects will start in March.

(Oh? Should we assume Alstom got the contract because they were willing to supply some jobs to Cdns?? In other news Bombardier blames its bad frame welds in TTC streetcars on poorly skilled workers in its Mexican subsidiary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(In other news - we should recall that Wynne-bag Ontari-owe LIE-berals grandly announced their great new Green deal with makers of solar panels and wind turbines - touting GREAT NEW GREEN JOBS we would be getting!! And of course several years later. LIE-berals collected several BILLION DOLLARS IN PENALTIES after it was determined the jobs and investments HAD NOT MATERIALIZED AS EXPECTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(However in order to prevent those wonderful green companies from giving up on Ontari-owe - LIE-berals were COMPELLED to give back a BIG CHUNK Of the multi billion dollars in penalties to the uncooperative companies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Chevron said that it would write down $11 billion in assets in the fourth quarter, much of which is tied to natural gas in Appalachia. The impairment is a sign that the waters are getting pretty rough for the oil and gas industry, due to a combination of supply surpluses, low prices, the struggling and unproven business case for large-scale shale drilling, and the looming threat of peak demand.
