Speaker of the British House of Commons, John Bercow, says he will step down

The speaker, who has been a colorful and controversial part of the Brexit debate, announced he would not seek reelection. He said he will stand aside on Oct. 31 if, as expected, lawmakers this evening fail to approve an early election. The date is significant because Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said Britain will leave the European Union by then, do or die.

A victory for the Leavers! Good riddance to this vile Remain Commons Speaker!

I thoroughly support Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle, the Labour MP for Chorley and a hard Brexiteer, becoming the new Speaker.

John Bercow says he will stand down as Commons Speaker and MP at the next election or on 31 October, whichever comes first.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Bercow said his 10-year "tenure" was nearing its end and it had been the "greatest honour and privilege" to serve.

If there was no early election, he said 31 October would be the "least disruptive and most democratic" date.

The ex-Tory MP succeeded the late Michael Martin as Speaker in 2009.

He has faced fierce criticism from Brexiteers, who have questioned his impartiality on the issue of Europe and claim he has facilitated efforts by MPs opposed to a no-deal exit to take control of Commons business.

Who is John Bercow?
He has also been criticised for not doing more to tackle allegations of bullying and harassment in the House of Commons.

Mr Bercow himself has been accused of mistreating several members of his own staff, which he denies.

In a break from normal convention, Mr Bercow was facing a challenge from the Conservatives in his Buckingham constituency at the next election - whenever it is called.

His wife, Sally, was in the public gallery as he made his announcement - which comes just hours before Parliament is due to be suspended or prorogued for five weeks.

Mr Bercow said he had decided at the time of the 2017 election that this would be his last Parliament as Speaker.

Brexit delay
If MPs reject calls for an early election later on Monday, as seems likely, the Speaker said it was important an "experienced figure" chaired debates in the final week of October leading up to the UK's possible exit from the EU.

The period between 14 October - when the Queen will open the new session of Parliament and the government announces its new legislative programme - and 31 October is likely to be among the most eventful and unpredictable in living memory.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he will not ask for a further Brexit delay and the UK must leave the EU on Halloween.

Mr Bercow received a standing ovation after his announcement, although not all Tories joined in

It's 11:16pm and MPs are still debating and haven't even voted yet on whether to grant Johnson the snap election that he wants.

We all know which way the vote will go, of course. There are a shitload of Remainer MPs who are shitscared of facing their constituents.

Johnson has just told the Commons again that he will NOT extend Article 50 beyond Halloween.

The debate on an early election is still going in the Commons, approaching midnight.

Johnson has just said:

"I will not ask for another delay."

"The people of this country have had enough of the delectable disputations of this House and I must warn members that their behaviour in thwarting the will of the people is undermining respect for this House in the country."

Slimeball Remainer SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford has just said:

"We want an election, but we don't want it on the prime minister's terms."

Remainers have been calling on Boris to call an election for weeks - now that's he's called their bluff they are all in a dither. In reality, they are too terrified to face their constituents.

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson says after 21 MPs were effectively thrown out of the Tory party, "it is time that others in the Conservative Party also examine their consciences about what they can do and the role that they are playing in all of this".

Jo Swimsuit should examine HER conscience. A quarter of her MPs weren't even elected as Lib Dems.

Yet how many of these Remainer defectors have called for by-elections?

The answer is: zero.

Liberal UNdemocrats.

Examine your conscience, Jo, love.

Remainers are too scared to face the electorate!

The government has been defeated on a motion pushing for an early general election because not enough MPs supported the PM’s call.

Under the 2011 Fixed Term Parliaments Acts, Boris Johnson needed the support of at least two-thirds of the 650 MPs - at least 434 - to trigger an early poll.

But only 293 MPs voted for an election – with 46 against.

British Parliament again rejects Johnsons call for early elections, further narrowing the beleaguered prime ministers options

Parliament is scheduled to be suspended tonight until mid-October. Boris Johnsons political opponents are concerned he will somehow defy a new law that seeks to avert a no-deal Brexit on Oct. 31 and effectively compels him to request another three-month delay.

Johnson accuses Corbyn of being a "yellow belly" and states that "Hell will freeze over" before Corbyn lets the people decide on Brexit.

Watching all this in the background....on BBC.............

What happened to the Brit decorum, proper protocol , tact and diplomacy??

Name calling!! such heavy handed verbosity.

They might want to remember that whatever they come up with.......the EU must go along with.. ..if they are going to get along with the EU in the future. Don't think the UK can go it alone.......in an isolationist fashion. No nation can ....not anymore. Complicated process made more difficult with personality issues.

Jeremy Corbyn and Remainers ever since Boris became PM: "Boris needs to hold an election to give himself a mandate."

After a few weeks, Boris: "I want to hold an election."

Corbyn and Remainers: "Oh no, you're not!"

That's truly how things have panned out. Bizarre!

And then you've got the Labour Party saying they want to negotiate a new deal with the EU and then vote AGAINST that deal.

Bizarre!

Brussels BREXIT Negotiator ADMITS: Boris and Farage Together Will DESTROY the EU!!!

Well this could be a darn good show.

Putin, Johnson and Farage will destroy us, warns EU chief

The toxic combination of Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage, populism, the rise of the far right and Russia will destroy the European Union, the chief Brexit negotiator in Brussels has told The Times.

Guy Verhofstadt, the former Belgian prime minister who leads Brexit talks for the European parliament, compared Mr Johnson, the favourite to be the next Conservative prime minister, to Marine Le Pen, the French far-right leader, warning that they both represented a “huge” threat.

The Remainers chucked it out of the window.

I DO think that.

What's isolationist about not being in the EU? Almost 90% of all countries aren't in it, you dimwit.
Well.....good luck going it alone.

Calling posters names reflects BADLY on you........

The EU has been shitting itself ever since Boris became PM. He's no May, weakly surrendering to every EUSSR demand. And just imagine the bricks that Brussels will shit if Boris teamed up with Nigel.

Still, my reckoning is that the EUSSR will shitf£ck itself to death before Britain destroys it.
