Andreescu to be offered key to the city: Mississauga mayor

Bianca Andreescu was on top of the world Sunday — on the top of New York’s Rockefeller Center, at least — and Mississauga’s mayor couldn’t have been more excited about their homegrown tennis star.
Mayor Bonnie Crombie said she was “just so proud” with the U.S. Open winner — who beat tennis legend Serena Williams in two straight sets Saturday before an almost entirely pro-Serena crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
“She’s put Canada back on the international tennis map …and (I’m proud) that a Canadian girl could come so far so fast in her tennis career,” she said. “It demonstrates an enormous competency in the sport but also a compassion and humility beyond her years.”

Just 19 and on her first year of the tennis circuit, Andreescu expressed a typically Canadian sentiment after the win, indicating she was sorry for beating Williams and that she knew the crowd wanted her opponent to win. She conducted interviews Sunday from the top of the Rockefeller Center in New York.
Crombie said while timing is dependent on the tennis star’s schedule, she’s planning to offer Andreescu the honorary key to the city. She’s also meeting with city officials first thing Monday to discuss possible rallies and parades as well as a street-naming, which would have to be approved by council.
On Sunday night, the Mississauga City Hall clocktower was lit gold in honour of her championship.

Crombie said she first met the tennis phenom, who trained at the Ontario Racquets Club, at the Rogers Cup in Toronto this past June.
“I was very impressed with how composed she was and very focussed,” added the civic leader. “When you watch her play, you can see what a fierce competitive individual she is which also makes me very proud.”
Crombie said Andreescu also demonstrated a “compassion beyond her years” at the Rogers Cup when she showed empathy for Williams’ injury.
“She went and embraced Serena in a way that I thought showed great maturity and great compassion,” the mayor said.
Andreescu — now known as #ShetheNorth — was celebrated extensively on the Twitterverse after her win and coverage around the world noted that this was the second big win for a Canadians in the sports field following the Toronto Raptors’ NBA victory in June.

Meteoric-rising Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu is savouring her historic win at the U.S. Open — beating her idol, the legendary Serena Williams — by being a guest on popular American TV shows with her championship trophy in tow on Monday.
“You made history here … (in America). Let me just run through some things here,” said Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon to 19-year-old Andreescu, listing off the ways her championship victory is remarkable. “You started the year ranked 152, now you rank five. You’re the first teenager to win a major in over a decade. You’re the first player born in the 2000s to win a major singles title. You’re the first Canadian to win a major singles title. And this is the first time you’ve qualified for the U.S. Open in three years and you won the whole thing.”
A poised and precocious Andreescu told Fallon she hasn’t had time to let the gravity of the situation sink in with all the media clamouring for interviews.
“Everything has been pretty hectic ever since. So I never really got the chance to let things soak in, but yeah, the last year has been pretty crazy, I was going through really bad back injury, so now being able to hold this trophy is something pretty special — and playing Serena in the final, I’ve been dreaming of this moment for a pretty long time …”
Andreescu also called out Drake on the Tonight Show for not congratulating her like many other famous Canadians did.
The segment with Fallon was the top trending video on YouTube Tuesday, with her appearances on The View and Live with Kelly and Ryan near the top, too.
” … And you even apologized when you won, ‘I’m sorry, you wanted Serena to win,’” said Meghan McCain.
“Yeah, that’s such a Canadian thing to do,” Andreescu joked on the set of The View.
On Live with Kelly and Ryan Andreescu explained how the mentally prepared to win the U.S. Open.
“I started meditating and using creative visualization when I was about 12 or 13-years-old. My amazing mother … introduced me to it… I think it’s a very powerful tool to have, you can create your own reality with your mind. So I tried my best to feel myself winning this trophy and when I was 15 I did write a cheque — well back then it wasn’t $3.8 million — but every year I kept increasing it and for it to become a reality is crazy.”

WARMINGTON: Mississauga preparing to fete Bianca Andreescu

The Queen of the North will not only be fitted her much deserving crown Sunday, but also receive the key to the Kingdom of Mississauga.
“We are so proud of Queen B,” Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie said of U.S. Open tennis champion Bianca Andreescu.
And we will show her just how proud we are of her on Sunday.”
In fact there is a possibility that the She the North event at Celebration Square at Mississauga City Hall could see the largest crowds ever to gather in the square.
And that’s saying something, since during the Toronto Raptors playoff run the square was regularly jam-packed.
This is expected to be big, since many have been following closely the rise of the 19-year-old tennis phenom who not only was born here but learned to play the game here too.
This event is, in essence, Mississauga’s NBA championship or Stanley Cup parade — a gathering that will bring together the community, give great music and entertainment and some surprises.
“We are preparing for 30,000 people,” Mayor Crombie said Friday.
“But whatever it is, it’s going to be huge.”

This promises to be a giant party for a once-tiny young girl from Mississauga who first picked up a tennis racket at eight-years-old and took lessons at the Ontario Racket Club with big dreams that she has now fulfilled.
Bianca will not only be the second person to receive the key to the city of Mississauga, but will also unveil a road sign for a new street — Andreescu Way.
“People are telling us we should call it Bianca Court, but we don’t have many courts in Mississauga,” Crombie said with a laugh.
“But we don’t rule anything out.”
Celebration Square on Sunday between 4-6 p.m. will ceremonially be transformed into Celebration Court for this new tennis icon.
“We really want to honour her,” Crombie said.
”She is our girl from Mississauga but she is also all of Canada’s girl.”

This is why Crombie graciously also invited Toronto Mayor John Tory, who will also present a declaration and some other special kudos. In fact all of the GTA mayors have been invited.
“We want it to be a special day for Bianca and for her wonderful parents and family,” said Crombie.
Just as Bianca envisioned one day winning the U.S. Open grand slam, Crombie was thinking the same thing after she won the Rogers Cup in which the mayor was invited onto the court to officiate in a coin toss.
I know this because I was in touch with the mayor the day after that win about the idea of throwing a victory lap for the young star. Crombie was on board but felt Bianca would achieve even more and kept the notion close to her until after the U.S. Open.
“I had a feeling she would do well,” said Crombie.
She certainly did just that.
“It’s a tremendous achievement,” Crombie said.
It’s also an example to young people everywhere just what you can achieve if you work hard.
This is why she’s joining former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion as the only other recipient of Mississauga’s keys to the city.
“She has inspired other young players to play tennis or chase their dream,” said Crombie. “She has showed what you can achieve.”
And she’s going to get a raucous ovation and cheers from the people of the city she was born in.
But this time, unlike with what happened in New York where the fans were rooting against her, this boisterous, deafening crowd will be all for Bianca.

Bianca Andreescu hasn’t shared the stage with that kind of firepower since she faced legendary Serena Williams in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
And like she did at the U.S. Open on Sept. 7, Canada’s newest sports star crushed it in the heart of Mississauga on Sunday.
The number of politicians who showed up to mark the 19-year-old’s achievements on that stage at Mississauga Celebration Square appeared to surpass the tennis phenom’s age.

Still, cheered on by about 10,000 supporters, she really seemed to enjoy receiving a key to the city from Mayor Bonnie Crombie and having a street named in her honour.
“This is crazy,” Andreescu told the excited crowd. “I never thought I would have my own parade.”
For Mississauga, this part parade, part rally was a chance to have its own NBA championship or Stanley Cup celebration. This was one of Mississauga’s finest moments.
“You have made us so proud,” said Crombie. “We love you.”
The crowd showed that over and over.
“She the North,” they chanted.
And “Bi-anca, Bi-anca.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded her, noting the “young are not just leaders for tomorrow but for today, as well.”

In acknowledging her parents, Maria and Nicu, and family dog, Coco, Trudeau said “thank you as well for all those years ago, choosing Canada to start and launch your family because in this country, anything is possible.”
From the tennis court to courting votes, Trudeau turned this into a campaign stop. He posed for as many selfies as the young star who everybody showed up for.
No one seemed to be calling it out of bounds, though — including Bianca who embraced Trudeau and all of the political leaders, including Toronto Mayor John Tory, sports ministers Kirsty Duncan (federal) and Lisa MacLeod (provincial), and Mississauga’s legendary former mayor, Hazel McCallion.
The people who seemed the most emotional were her mom and dad who came to Mississauga from Romania years ago with two suitcases and dreams of a brighter future.

It happened. This special “She the North” day in Mississauga will be a scene in the movie.
But just to be sure he’s got it forever, her father just had to capture a lot of what he was witnessing on his trusty smartphone — completing a full 360-degree circle from the stage.

What an historic moment for Canada as we all watched Bianca Andreescu defeat Serena Williams at the U.S. Open and capture her first major tennis championship. I’m sure that this talented teenager will win more trophies in the future. So is there any medical advice to help her avoid injury and end a promising career?
One thing quickly caught my eye when the cities of both Mississauga and Toronto gave her a hero’s welcome. Her appearance in civilian attire gave us a chance to see her style off the court. But it was her shoes that shocked me. I wondered why a high performance athlete had not been warned of the hazards of high heels. One unfortunate misstep could cause severe injury.

For adolescent girls, high heels may seem like a step toward reaching womanhood. But the damage to their feet can eventually cripple them. Is the desire to appear glamourous worth it? An orthopedic surgeon once told me, “I rarely see men with foot problems. But I see many women who are paying the price for wedging their feet in high heel shoes that force all their weight forward onto their toes.”
Could high heels mangle Bianca’s feet if she wears high heels too often? Nature did not design feet for such an unnatural concentration of force. Stilettos and other high heel shoes produce three times more stress on the front of the foot than flat shoes. Sooner or later something must give from continual pounding and straining.
Aching feet are often due to metatarsalgia in which the long bones of the feet become painful and tender. The cumulative effect of standing and walking in high heels for many years can cause serious bone impairment. And it only takes a moment to lose one’s balance or slip and fall. High heel shoes are not a good prescription for a tennis star with many competitive years ahead. Bianca must remember Newton’s law that an apple falls to the ground because of gravity. This immutable law also means that gravity pulls the weight of our bodies into the cramped toe area of highly slanted shoes. Just as apples get bruised when they fall to the ground, punished feet can lead to bunions.
Gifford-Jones Law states that one medical problem leads to another and another. So high heels do more harm than just strangle feet. Aching feet and sore backs often go together. The height of stiletto shoes makes women lean forward, with a tendency to walk with knees bent. This in turn causes a tightening of muscles in the lower back as muscles must maintain more tension to keep the body upright and balanced. Bianca has already shown she is prone to injuries. Walking on high spikes also provides little support for the sides of the feet. So a sudden twist of the body or any misstep could cause the foot to lean outward or inward resulting in a bone fracture. What a tragedy if an unexpected move had triggered an injury on the stage in Mississauga.
Orthopedic specialists agree that it would be preferable for women to wear flat shoes. But they also concur that lowering the heal to two inches would save many feet. Wearing high heel shoes for years also shortens the Achilles tendon. So if a woman suddenly switches to flats, the tendon can become overstretched and tear.
My hope is that Bianca’s trainer will realize that the medical risk of high heel shoes is simply too great. And that Canada will see her celebrate more trophies – in flats.
