Once upon a time there was rail between Edmonton and Calgary and Regina-Saskatoon.

45 years ago there were doodlebugs on rural runs on the prairies.

If transit is hurting for cash and relying on subsidies they could be running freight at night and in the low volume daytime hours.

Not a lot of markets in Canada for that stuff right now.
Really? Draw a line from Edmonchuk to Winterpeg and onto the ocean and all those places need that kind of system. Seem like moves are being made to make sure the goods that get in are at 1930's levels, right under the towers that move people along at 300kph from the labs on Baffin Island doing mag/lev space launches through the holes in the Van Allen belt thanks to the ease to get to absolute zero.
If not for Ottawa the North could have already had have the stuff they need as Ottawa sells them shit that is always broken down of it just falls apart all by itself

My mistake. I thought the rail line between the two was similar to the LRT system for GO trains in the GTA. Mind you it's been almost 40 years since the last time I was there.
Every village in the north should have a public transportation system based on 'the cable car' and they do not get potholes like gravel roads and they do not need plowing and a lot of other shit. The 'local rail system' has many uses like home delivery of fuel and water and hauling away garbage and sewage.

The means to use local resources should be developed rather than reliance on material things being brought in from the outside. Peat logs compressed to the density of birch would be an emergency fuel system. A baked clay floor rather than vinyl as well as it being a fireproof siding that might save a place in a forest-fire event

An atv/hovercraft is more useful once you are past the last road in the 'fly-in village'.
