I believe Toronto has taken a number of measures such as hardening areas where people gather - such as bus stops - with anti collision barriers - in order to try and reduce the likelihood of this happening again.
Sort of good to hear and sad to hear at the same time.
The world has really changed.
Actually, I was referring to the Armenian Church, not the ethnicity. It is just about the oldest Christian Church on Earth. It's so old, Paul mentions it in his letters.

Accused Christchurch mosque shooter pleads not guilty to all charges

WELLINGTON — An Australian man pleaded not guilty on Friday to 92 charges stemming from a massacre in two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch three months ago and will stand trial in May next year.
A lone gunman armed with semi-automatic weapons attacked Muslims attending Friday prayers in Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island on March 15, killing 51 people in the country’s worst peace-time mass shooting. The attacker broadcast the shooting live on Facebook.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern introduced tough new firearm laws banning semi-automatic weapons after the attack, which also wounded dozens more people.
Brenton Tarrant, 29, a suspected white supremacist, appeared by video link from a maximum security facility in Auckland while his lawyer entered not guilty pleas on his behalf. The accusations against him include one terrorism charge.
About 80 members of Christchurch’s Muslim community and dozens of media representatives attended the hearing in a packed court room, with many seated in another room watching by video.
High Court Justice Cameron Mander said the trial would begin on May 4. The prosecution expected the trial would take around six weeks, although Mander said defense lawyers believed it could take considerably longer.
Courts normally try to bring cases to trial within a year but Mander said “the scale and complexity of this case makes this challenging.”
Tarrant has been remanded in custody until Aug. 15, when the next case review hearing is scheduled.
Mander said Tarrant was fit to stand trial after the court ordered him to undergo a mental health assessment at a previous hearing on April 5.
“No issue arises regarding the defendant’s fitness to plead, to instruct counsel, and to stand his trial. A fitness hearing is not required,” Mander said in a minute released to the media after Friday’s hearing.
The court lifted an order last week suppressing the publication of pictures of Tarrant. An interim suppression order barring the publication of the identity of survivors also lapsed and will not be reinstated.

I have to agree with some people who replied in other places I read this.

This monster WANTS to drag this on. He wants his fame. He wants the headlines. The longer this is out in public via a trial, the better it is for him.

For him, I wish there was more than the death penalty. Torture would fit nicely...

I don't care about him and I don't care about his trial. I only care about him spreading his sickness

New Zealand launches 'buy-back' scheme for weapons banned after mosque attacks

WELLINGTON — New Zealand’s government on Wednesday launched a multimillion-dollar, six-month “buy-back” scheme to compensate owners of powerful but newly banned semi-automatic weapons prohibited in the wake of deadly attacks on two mosques in the Southern city of Christchurch.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Minister of Police Stuart Nash said in a joint emailed statement that NZ$208 million ($135.97 million) had been set aside to compensate owners of the banned semi-automatic firearms up to 95% of the original cost.
They would have until Dec. 20 to hand in their weapons.
“Police have detailed plans in place for the next step, which is the collection of firearms from the community. It will be a huge logistical exercise and is expected to get under way in mid-July,” Nash said.
Parliament passed the gun reform law – the first substantial changes to the country’s gun laws in decades – by a vote of 119 to 1 in April.
The vote came less than a month after its worst-ever peacetime mass shooting in which 51 people were killed and dozens injured in attacks on two mosques in Christchurch.
The new curbs bar the circulation and use of most semi-automatic firearms, parts that convert firearms into semi-automatic firearms, magazines over a certain capacity and some shotguns.
Existing gun laws had provided for a standard “A-category” gun license covering semi-automatics limited to seven shots.
Police estimated around 14,300 military style semi-automatics would be covered by the new legislation, though the government said it was difficult to predict the exact number.
Almost 700 weapons had already been handed in before the compensation scheme was launched and almost 5,000 had been registered by owners with police while they awaited collection.
“There is high uncertainty around any (costs), owing to the lack of information on the number of prohibited items, their type and condition,” Robertson said, adding that better estimates of the total cost would be available once the buy-back was under way and the government would top up the amount if needed.
The government has also begun work on a second arms amendment bill to tackle issues regarding a gun registry, among others. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told reporters on Monday that she expected the government to announce its plans for the law in the next few weeks.
With a population of just under 5 million, New Zealand is home to an estimated total of 1.5 million firearms, making it the country with the 17th highest rate of civilian firearm ownership in the world, according to the Small Arms Survey.

New Zealand doesn't have the gun mentality that the US population does, ie it's their security blanket/soother/stress relief in how to deal with the real world.

And considering it was a white piece of garbage that did the deed, I don't get why you're being a jerk about Muslims.

Well, then again...

Accused New Zealand gunman's letter from jail circulates online

WELLINGTON — The gunman accused of killing 51 people in New Zealand has written several letters from jail expressing his political and social views, prompting Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to say that should never have been allowed.
The New Zealand Herald and other local media organizations had images of the six-page letter and envelope from the alleged mosque shooter, Brenton Tarrant, sent from Auckland Prison, which was posted online on the controversial image board 4chan.

“I think every New Zealander would have an expectation that this individual should not be able to share his hateful message from behind bars,” Ardern was quoted telling reporters on Wednesday in Tuvalu, where she is attending the Pacific Islands Forum.
“Obviously, this is an offender who has a very specific goal in mind, in terms of sharing his propaganda, so we should have been prepared for that.”
Prisoners are allowed to send and receive mail, and prison directors can only withhold it in certain circumstances.
Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis said on Thursday that Tarrant has sent nine letters from prison so far, two to his mother, five to others, while two were withheld.
Davis, however, said he did not have details about who the other five letters were sent to.
“I’ve asked corrections to look at the content of those other letters, but what we have done is we have put an immediate stop to any mail sent or received…,” Davis told Radio New Zealand.
Tarrant also received “a couple of dozen” letters from around the world, Davis said, adding that some of them were withheld while others were sent through to him.
“We have made changes to the management of this prisoner’s mail to ensure that our robust processes are as effective as we need them to be,” New Zealand’s Department of Corrections said in a statement.
New Zealand site Newshub said the last two lines of the letter posted on 4chan could be read as a call to arms but blanked out what it said.
Tarrant, an Australian, pleaded not guilty to 92 charges stemming from the massacre at two mosques in Christchurch on March 15. He faces trial on May 2020.
