Peel teacher suspended for alleged support of terror groups
TORONTO - A gaggle of anti-Israel activists turned up at Queen’s Park Wednesday to defend the free speech rights of a Mississauga Catholic teacher suspended following her controversial comments at a recent Al-Quds Day rally.
The panel — consisting mostly of retired professors — claimed repeatedly that Nadia Shoufani is “under attack” and being silenced for exercising her right to freedom of expression about the Israeli “terrorists” who are forcing Palestinians to live “under brutal military occupation.”
“We are here to protest a campaign aimed at sanctioning and silencing her for having spoken on behalf of the rights of Palestinians who are living under brutal military occupation,” said Michael Keefer, professor emeritus of English at the University of Guelph, who admitted to never once visiting Israel or the West Bank.
But when I dared suggest their repeated anti-Israel comments were hateful, my right to free speech was attacked, jeered and treated with insults.
Shoufani, an elementary teacher at St. Catherine of Siena separate school, was recently suspended without pay pending an investigation following her keynote appearance July 2 at what Jewish advocacy groups commonly consider an anti-Israel hate rally.
(Oh that`s nice! OUR inclusive and tolerant society now thinks it is right to hire Mulsims to teach at Catholic schools! But would LIE-berals FORCE a Muslim school to hire a Catholic???????????? OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

In her 10-minute speech, posted on YouTube, Shoufani urges attendees — many carrying placards calling for a boycott of Israel and with a Jewish star crossed out — to “resist the occupation” of Palestine and to “support the resistance in any form imaginable.” She also expresses “glory to the martyrs” — one of whom, a member of the Palestine Liberation Front (a known terrorist organization), smashed the head of a four-year-old Israeli girl on beach rocks.
Shoufani did not attend Wednesday’s QP event. We were informed the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association, which is defending her, has told her not to speak publicly.
(It is indicative of the LIE-beral bigotry that has set in that a public sector civil service union would be involved in defending radical statements made by a union Hog member on her own time! There are lots of teachers in the world so why should a Catholic school be forced to accept a radical Muslim who considers Catholic values to be INFERIOR to Muslim values?????????)
Graham MacQueen, a professor emeritus at McMaster University, said Shoufani was correct to call on the rally attendees to resist.
“Does the (Dufferin-Peel Catholic) school board intend to investigate its teachers to see if any of them has publicly supported (Menachem) Begin, (Yitzak) Shamir, (Ariel) Sharon, (Ehud) Barak or any of the well-known terrorists Israelis have elected as prime ministers?” MacQueen asked.

When I asked whether espousing hate (and their efforts to enable that hate) was the kind of example we want teachers in our school system to set, Keefer called me “disgraceful” for accusing the panel of being disseminators of hatred and that I was both “insulting” and “grotesquely false.”
When I asked them if they comment equally about the atrocities of ISIS in the Mideast and elsewhere, Keefer told me I have the “perfect right to defend the indefensible” but that I don’t have an “unlimited right to be insulting and disseminate falsehoods.”
When I repeatedly asked the panel whether they consider Shoufani a good role model for students, MacQueen said my statement about Shoufani being a disseminator of hatred is “defamatory” (not that I said that).
B’nai Brith CEO Michael Mostyn said it’s “quite ironic” that the individuals who were preaching freedom of speech to defend Shoufani tried to “shut down” a reporter who asked them hard-hitting questions.
Whether Shoufani actually gives her “vile opinions” in the classroom is not relevant since in the age of social media, any student can “pull up her YouTube video” or her Facebook page and listen or see her “espouse her support for terrorism,” he said.
(In other words IT IS LIKELY Shoufani has been spouting off in class-and shutting down dissenting students!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Jordan Kerbal, deputy director of communications for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), said by referring the issue to the College of Teachers, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic school board has recognized that what Shoufani said is “deeply troubling and concerning” and there should be no place for this kind of language in a classroom.

Calling on people to support the resistance in “any form possible” (implying violence) is “deplorable” and “very worrying,” he added.

The good news is, or rather was, that Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca was finally driven by repeated Metrolinx screw-ups to order a review of the province’s disaster-prone regional transportation agency.
The bad news is Metrolinx Chair Rob Prichard got in a snit about it and told the Metrolinx board he got Del Duca to substantially “soften” and limit “the breadth” of that review.
(Great-the Metrolinx HOGS are telling the guys that sign their pay cheques to mind their own business and not snoop into their wild spending habit!)
That letter having gotten out courtesy of the Toronto Sun’s Shawn Jeffords, spokesmen for Del Duca and Prichard now say everything’s proceeding swimmingly with the review which is supposed to be out in the fall.
In other words, instead of kicking down doors and taking names, which is what is clearly needed to right the listing Metrolinx ship, it sounds like this review will be little more than a whitewash of this “arm’s length” government agency as it stumbles from disaster to disaster.
Metrolinx ignored seven — SEVEN! — of its own detailed reports telling it the $27.50 one-way fare it was planning to charge for the Union-to-Pearson Express was too high to attract riders.
Metrolinx charged it anyway and riders stayed away in droves, until it finally lowered the fare to $12.
Then there was Metrolinx’s bizarre, costly and unnecessary promotion of new uniforms for UP staff.
Plus its pointless cross-promotion deals with everything from the Toronto International Film Festival to a Toronto, Buffalo Bills football game, which always seemed to end with Metrolinx staff being showered with goodies.
(I say Del Duca won’t want to admit it but Metrolinx Hogs are simply behaving like LIE-berals! All Hogs think they are ENTITLED-just like little kids in a candy store whose parents have told them they can have anything they want! Because they are SPECIAL! And LIE-beral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Ontario’s Liberal government created Metrolinx to take the heat off itself on major transit decisions — then overruled it anyway, when, for example, the Liberals decided they needed to back a Scarborough subway, instead of an LRT, to get a Liberal candidate elected in a Scarborough byelection..
(And now that a LIE-beral represents Scarborough, WILL there be a subway? Gosh NO! What is wrong with Ontari-owe citizens that any of them continue to BELIEVE LIE-berals-in SPITE of the roughly THREE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS in outstanding pension IOU`s that LIE-berals have offered up but cannot pay for!)
Then auditor general Jim McCarter blasted Metrolinx in 2012 for letting the budget for its “Presto” pass almost triple to $700 million.
(Hey-if EXCESS is good for ORNGE and E-health its certainly good enough for Metrolinx! Or is it? And PRESTO is now proven to be what its critics called it: the most costly and least reliable of several systems available!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
On Tuesday, Metrolinx awarded a $428 million contract to build double-decker Go Trains to Bombardier, even though the company is behind schedule on a $1 billion streetcar order with Toronto and a previous $770 million contract with Metrolinx for LRTs.
(And of course now 59 of the new street cars are being SENT BACK to Bombardier for remedial work on BAD FRAME WELDS!!With an additional 6 more of the new cars needing repairs after being driven into and stranded in rising flood waters during thunder storms!!!!!!)
(And this brings us to the issue of neglected city drainage systems!! Are the storms really getting that much worse or is the entire Toronto sewer system simply getting clogged with sediment and garbage? Or should we assume the drainage system is simply overloaded since most of it was built 100 years ago- with no expansion to deal with the growing city? Maybe global warming is a HANDY LIE-beral EXCUSE for LIE-beral neglect of infrastructure?)
(IN my suburb there is a street where people had flooded basements- full of raw sewage 3 times in 5 years- RIGHT AFTER several new subdivisions were built UP STREAM from the old neighbourhood! And the govt got tired of listening to voters whining and built several rain water retention ponds- and problem solved!!)
Maybe it’s time to put Metrolinx out of its — and our — misery.
(Oh-I would say its WAY PAST TIME! Metrolinx was created to get things done-and NOTHING is being done. The only thing being built is Eglinton LRT-and its being done because of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford-who recognized that the city had money for one thing - they could have either Hog gravy OR they could have money for LRT-BUT NOT BOTH-so Ford cut the gravy!)

February 11 and I have a foot of global warming to clear from my sidewalks . Ten years ago I was golfing in shorts and a t-shirt in early February . Proof positive of climate change .
2 winters ago it was November that was cold all the way through, long, long ago it was cold for 3 months straight. The dead of winter is not the danger zone. Late springs and early fall frosts are.
Wash. State is getting 'lake effect' levels of snow. Hills and snow that turns to ice when driven on, that is not a good combination. Power lines like wet snow even less than roads do.
