FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST: The Bobbitt affair, 25 years later

It was the cut heard around the world.
Twenty-five years since John Wayne Bobbitt’s appendage was lopped off by his crazed wife Lorena, a new special on ABC’s 20/20 revisits the case.
What started as a bizarre local story ended up making international headlines and kept the gruesome twosome in the news for months.
“It touches every single Shakespearean theme. Love, lust, betrayal, conflict, drama. This had it all, including violence,” former tabloid TV host Maury Povich told ABC.
As Bobbitt slept that night in his Manassas, Va.home, Lorena attacked him.
Using a kitchen knife, she cut off his penis and tossed it into a snowbank, where paramedics found it. Doctors were able to reattach the discarded appendage.
“Initially the story was local news, kind of like a freak occurrence, but it became a sensation and quickly,” Vanity Fair contributing editor Lili Anolik said.
“The public couldn’t get enough.”
John Bobbitt, now 51, called the member mangling incident “a nightmare.”
“I cleared my thoughts, applied pressure. I went to wake my friend up to tell him to get me to the hospital,” he said, recalling his first moments sans penis.

When he saw his injuries, the former Marine said he started “going crazy.” At first, doctors thought he’d slashed his wrist.
But when they saw what actually had happened, their “jaws dropped.”
Doctors were able to reattach Bobbitt’s penis — kept on ice in a hot dog box by helpful cops — in a nine-hour operation.
They did such a good job that for a brief time Bobbitt starred in a number of porn films, including John Wayne Bobbitt Uncut and Frankenpenis.

Lorena Bobbitt claimed her husband was physically and sexually abusive. She now goes by the name Lorena Gallo and runs a charity that fights domestic violence.
“I didn’t want to teach him a lesson,” Gallo told Vanity Fair in August. “No, it was survival. Life and death. I was fearing for my life.”
She was acquitted because of temporary insanity and served 45 days in a mental institution. John Wayne Bobbitt was acquitted in another trial of raping her.
“I couldn’t believe it, how could someone get away with it,” John Bobbitt told ABC News.

John Wayne Bobbitt is opening up about making headlines around the world following a gruesome incident involving his now-ex-wife 25 years ago.
In June 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut her husband’s penis off with a kitchen knife at their home in Virginia and fled with the appendage. She then flung it from her car window. Luckily for Bobbitt, police tracked down his severed organ and it was successfully reattached.
Bobbitt, 51, sat down to talk with Dr. Mehmet Oz on the Feb. 5 episode of The Dr. Oz Show and share some behind-the-scenes revelations about the infamous event.
Bobbitt recalled how he “kinda walked into the hospital” after the attack.
“The doctor comes up to me and says, ‘Show me your wrist.’ And I said, ‘That’s not where I’m cut.’”
The doctor told Bobbitt to show him where he was wounded.
“So I pulled on my pants, and blood is all over the place, some guy’s putting towels on me, he kept putting all these towels on me and I was like pretty much suicidal at that point,” he revealed.

Bobbit continued: “I mean, I’m kind of mutilated in the most worst way a man can be mutilated and I was self-terminated, and I was looking for something that I can end it with.”
When Dr. Oz asked if he would have killed himself, Bobbit replied: “Yeah.”
Bobbitt later denied 48-year-old Lorena’s claims he sexually and physically assaulted her during their marriage. The two divorced in 1995.

As for his penis? Bobbitt recently told ABC’s 20/20 that it is “normal now.”
“I don’t want to mess with it… it’s been through the wringer,” he added.

It’s been 25 years since Lorena Bobbitt chopped off her ex-husband’s penis. Now, she said she does not regret the incident that went viral in the 90s.
In a sit-down interview that aired on TODAY on Friday, Lorena claimed she did not remember details of cutting of her husband John Wayne Bobbitt’s member with a kitchen knife in their Virginia home. She later fled the scene and flung it out of her car window.
Fortunately for Bobbitt, police tracked down his severed penis and it was successfully reattached.
After 25 years, Lorena claimed to NBC’s Kristen Dahlgren that “repeated verbal, physical and sexual abuse” motivated her to commit the act. She also admitted she has no regrets.
“Oh my god how could you regret something that was not planned?” Lorena told Dahlgren in the video shown above. “How could you? You have to understand, I wasn’t in my right mindset.”
As Radar readers know, Lorena was found not guilty of malicious wounding by reason of insanity. John Wayne also was found not guilty of marital sexual assault.
The ex-wife defined herself as a victim. In the midst of the Me Too movement, Lorena said she believes her story is a “gift.”
“If I can help change a life then my mission is worth it,” she said.

Lorena’s story will be told on a four-part documentary with Amazon. She said she hopes the series helps to “break that taboo” of domestic abuse.
“I think my story, the documentary, will actually push that conversation again on the table and say, ‘Look, yes, it happened 25 years ago but things are not changing much.’”
Lorena also claimed that John Wayne has since reached out to her over the years via “Valentine’s cards” and “love notes.”
The ex-wife’s shocking interview comes days after Bobbitt sat down with ABC’s 20/20 claiming that his once-detached member is “normal now.”
