Shaw Communications is shutting down its Freedom Mobile call centre in Windsor, putting about 130 people out of work a year after the workers voted to unionize and only months after signing their first collective agreement.

“There’s no economic reason for them to do this. We consider this to be completely outrageous and completely unjustified,” Lee Riggs, TWU, USW National Local 1944 president, said Monday afternoon.

(Sadly, United Steel Workers union is NOT noted for its restraint or frugal ways when handling the bosses cash! So it IS possible the call centre is being closed because of the union contract! And call centre workers are generally poorly paid so maybe the closing IS an economic choice?)

The merged Telecommunications Workers Union and the United Steel Workers represent the 130 workers who will lose their jobs in three layoffs beginning Wednesday. The other layoff dates are Feb. 21 and March 28.

“This is going to have a devastating effect on the Windsor-Essex area, 130 jobs coming out of that area,” Riggs said.

(Yeah- Windsor is not a high employment rate sort of town! But then LIE-berals are studiously IGNORING reports that their booming economy does not extend out beyond the civil service union halls! MOST of Ontari-owe- outside the GTA HAS NOT recovered from the 2008 meltdown in spite of LIE-beral propaganda claiming otherwise!)

Shaw said it is moving the call centre to Victoria, B.C. which Riggs said would be more expensive and makes no sense economically.

(Oh now Riggs is just whining- how can he speak for company costs in other provinces? And of course he doesnt know what govt grants may have been offered to keep the jobs in country! A lot of these senior union Hogs have never had any real experience at the job! They MIGHT have done the job 25 years back and then jumped into union management for better money and easier work!)

Riggs said Shaw which owns Freedom Mobile took an antagonistic stance against unionization in late 2016 and early 2017 and at one point threatened to lock the workers out. The start of the layoffs come at the one-year anniversary of the workers voting to unionize, Riggs said. Employees narrowly voted to ratify their first collective agreement Sept. 20.

(IN other words the choice to close the call centre likely WAS an economic choice! The public wants LOW rates and unions want HIGH wages- something has to give!)

The average wage was $13.68 which got bumped up with the recent minimum wage hike.

An employee who didn’t want to be identified for fear she would be laid off immediately said workers were in tears and in shock Monday.

(No wonder! People cannot get work in Windsor- and they cannot afford to LIVE in Toronto! What are people supposed to do? And its mostly younger people caught in this crap!)

Following fast on the heels of using hockey arenas, hotels and buying $7-million buildings to house the homeless and refugees, Toronto’s shelter officials have come up with yet another bright idea.

I’d like to introduce you to Toronto’s version of a refugee camp — one which will cost $10-million and will be comprised of pre-fab structures erected on vacant city property.

This idea and the plan to add 1,000 more beds in 13 new locations- plus an additional 951 replacement beds- by 2020 — more bandaids to house the homeless — will be discussed at the city’s community services committee Wednesday.

There will be four such refugee camps in Toronto — two somewhere in downtown Toronto, one in the west end and one in the east end.

(I think we should expand on this talk of refugee camps! The reality is that LIE-berals are creating two classes of homeless! Illegals will be housed in actual permanent structures such as Radisson Hotel! While Cdn homeles- who are usually drug addicts or mentally ill - will find shelter in the windowless temporary structure bunkers that LIE-beral are erecting in parks!)

Although the addresses have not yet been divulged publicly, I can confirm that one such refugee camp will be located in Coun. John Campbell’s Etobicoke ward, and another in the Scarborough ward of Coun. Glenn DeBaeremaeker. According to shelter spokesman Patricia Anderson, the locations were selected based on the availability of city land and their proximity to transit and social services.

Anderson also confirmed Tuesday the four structures — costing $2.5 million each — will be insulated, have full plumbing for washrooms, showers and laundry facilities as well as electrical and HVAC systems that “provide year-round comfort.” They can be constructed in eight to 10 weeks and “repurposed to meet other community needs,” she added.

(Oh? AND WHAT OTHER community needs are there for “temporary structures” erected in city parks? This “repurposed” claim is LIE-beral B.S.)

Asked why pre-fabs, Anderson said the need for “low-barrier, 24-hour respite service” still exists and they are using the temporary structures because of cost-effectiveness and flexibility of use, speed of acquisition and installation.

(Considering the kind of budget blowing cash LIE-berals have wasted on “repurposing” permanent structures for the homeless- the temporary structures might be a bargain?)

(Though the practical solution is the one LIE-berals will not face- closing the border and tightening immigration policy so the only people who come here are ones who can stand on their owntwo feet!)

The idea was floated out last week on the day before the provincial election when few media were paying attention.

No surprise there.

I believe Mayor John Tory and the city’s shelter officials — in an attempt to manage a crisis partly of their own making- can we say Sanctuary City? — really have little clue how to deal with the influx of refugees into the city.

It’s kind of like the blind leading the blind.

(Actually city officials and their LIE-beral allies DO KNOW how to deal with illegals! The problem is they don’t know how to start- without admitting they are putting the rights of trespassing illegals AHEAD of Cdn citizens! How can LIE-berals drive our kids and our old folks into the poor house- while building up illegals?)

(LIE-berals expected their electoral reform garbage would paralyse our parliament and turn it into an out of control spending machine full if lunatic fringe parties that LIE-berals could dominate! Instead LIE-berals are being forced into an election with nothing but their dismal record of FAILED POLICIES to work with in an effort to win public favour!)

Heaven knows how much city money will be expended on warehousing them so the politicians and the mayor can virtue signal as to how wonderful they are before the municipal election.

(The sad reality is that LIE-beral policy designed to aid the homeless is actually CREATING EVER MORE homeless! The solution is less LIE-beral policy- not more wasted money used only to BUY votes for LIE-berals!)

Never mind how much impact any of these low-barrier sites have on the surrounding neighbourhoods. I’m sick to death hearing the stories of the lawlessness around the shelters on Davenport Rd. and 21 Park Rd., not to mention the Dundas and Victoria safe injection site and that our politicians have done nothing.

Coun. James Pasternak, chairman of the community services committee, said he was taken to see samples of the structure last week and was concerned that this is already a fait accompli without any input by the committee or council.

“They made a sole-sourced deal and did it without council approval,” he said. “I think this is going too far.”

No kidding.

Campbell, who also attended last week’s tour, said city officials certainly didn’t consult with him and he’d rather this pre-fab was somewhere else.

But he said he’s “accepting the reality” as long as it’s temporary short-term accommodation.

Good luck on that one.

I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating: If you build it they will come.

There is another answer, and that involves saying no more.

It’s time surrounding GTA cities took their fair share and that the mayor and council stop expecting property taxpayers to foot the bill.

But that means having the guts to do so and cojones are pretty much absent at city hall.

(LIE-beral fortunes are sliding so badly that desperate LIE-berals will do and pay ANYTHING in hope of winning more votes! We should be VERY CONCERNED about how many illegals will be allowed to slip into voting booths in the next elections!)
