Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that President Donald Trump staged a "political rally" at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's ceremonial swearing-in that "further undermined the image and integrity of the court."

"What was done last night in the White House was a political rally. It further undermined the image and integrity of the court," Clinton, Trump's Democratic 2016 election opponent, told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview.
"And that troubles me greatly. It saddens me. Because our judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government. So I don't know how people are going to react to it. I think, given our divides, it will pretty much fall predictably between those who are for and those who are against," Clinton said.
"But the President's been true to form," she continued. "He has insulted, attacked, demeaned women throughout the campaign — really for many years leading up to the campaign. And he's continued to do that inside the White House."
When Trump hosted Kavanaugh and his family at a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House on Monday night, he apologized "on behalf of our nation" to the newly minted justice for the difficult confirmation process.
"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure," Trump said. "Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation. Not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception. What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process."

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp on Tuesday dismissed Hillary Clinton's comments to CNN that Democrats "cannot be civil" with Republicans who want "to destroy what you stand for, what you care about."
"That's ridiculous," the North Dakota Democrat told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "Anderson Cooper 360." "I mean I can't imagine how you get anything done if you don't bring civility back into politics, and that goes for both sides."
"I hope that we can find common ground in this country that sexual assault is more prominent than people thought it was," she said.
Like all other Senate Democrats except Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who is also locked in a tight re-election battle in a state that President Donald Trump won in 2016, Heitkamp voted against confirming Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, including Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her allegations.
While Heitkamp stands by her decision, her opposition to Kavanaugh may not help her re-election bid in North Dakota. Recent polls show Heitkamp down by double digits to her Republican challenger, Rep. Kevin Cramer.
Cramer hit Heitkamp for her opposition to Kavanaugh and dismissed the #MeToo movement at large in a The New York Times interview Monday.
"They cannot understand this movement toward victimization," he said of the women in his family. "They are pioneers of the prairie. These are tough people whose grandparents were tough and great-grandparents were tough."
Heitkamp dismissed Cramer's remarks Tuesday as "a horrible message."
"I don't understand what he meant," she said. "Did he mean that if you're a victim of sexual assault you shouldn't talk about it? You shouldn't disclose it? You shouldn't report it? Which I think would be a horrible message. But it's the other message, that if you're a strong woman you aren't ever going to be victimized, because that's the wrong message too -- has nothing to do with the strength of who we are."
Heitkamp later told CNN that her mother, who died in April, had been sexually assaulted and "to suggest she's not strong because she's a victim was like a trigger for me. I just said she made us strong because she said don't ever let this happen, fight for your rights, don't ... this was a life-changing experience for her and she made us stronger because of it."
Despite the long odds of her re-election, Heitkamp reiterated that she had made the right call in opposing Kavanaugh.
"I knew the easy political vote would've been a 'yes' vote. But I also know that my parents raised me to do the right thing as I see it and experience the consequences of that," she said. "Whether it's re-election or not getting re-elected -- that to me wasn't the point."

The Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed Friday that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's security clearance has been revoked by her own request. The move comes more than a year after Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley requested the department to investigate if Clinton still had security clearance.
According to the letter released by Grassley, the State Department said that Clinton's clearance was revoked on Aug. 30. Five of Clinton's aides, who she had asked be designated as researches, had their security clearances revoked on Sept. 20.
Security clearances: How do they work?
During Clinton's run for president, lawmakers and investigators looked into her and her staff's security clearance as part of the investigation into her use of a private email server.
Retiring senior officials usually retain a basic level of security clearance, but the Trump administration has been "exploring" the possibility of revoking security clearances of several intelligence officials who have criticized the president.
Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in July that the White House is evaluating on a "case by case basis" the clearances of several of President Obama's intelligence officials, including former FBI director James Comey and former National Security Adviser Susan Rice.
In August, President Trump ordered former CIA Director John Brennan, one of those officials, be stripped of his security clearance.
The CIA "holds" former directors' security clearance and renews it every five years for the rest of their lives. But that requires former CIA directors to behave like current CIA employees if they want to keep their clearance, which means avoiding travel to certain countries and generally living in a manner above reproach.
Other former government employees can keep their security clearances if they move to a private sector job where they work with classified information, such as at a defense contractor. The company would then apply to the government for someone to keep or receive a security clearance. The security officers at the different agencies then grant or rule if someone can keep their clearances.
Hundreds if not thousands of private companies apply for their employees to receive security clearances. In an interview with Bloomberg earlier this year, the CEO of Lockheed Martin said that 60,000 of her employees have a security clearance of some kind.
