So what are your thoughts on US subsidies to US milk producers? Do you favour free markets or do you not, comrade?
It should be a fantastic opportunity for the Canadian dairy farmers to ramp up their production and flood the US with our "untainted" milk, complete with an agressive advertising campaign about the advantages of the pure Canadian product ... with Rocky Mountain streams, clear blue skies and other subliminal clap-trap to pull the less than brilliant.

Do you really think Americans favour the free market so much that they'd cut tariffs to their dairy industry? In many respects, they're commies in all but name.

Who cares? We offer a different product that lacks a possibly dangerous additive. We should be out-competing them in the open market.

Most Us farmers do not use the hormone; but apparently they're not allowed to advertise that, which means the consumer has no way to know which is which. If the label is Canadian though, then they know it better respects animal rights. Apparently those hormones don't hurt the milk itself but cause all kinds of health problems for the cows later.

What makes your post so sad is that it was a serious attempt. It appears just another capitalist pig is about to roasted.

AT A gathering in Beijing last year of Interpol, the body that promotes co-operation between police forces from different countries, the group’s Chinese president, Meng Hongwei (pictured, above left), warned of “political black-swan incidents” that were plaguing the world. He was probably not thinking of his own organisation. But in late September Mr Meng disappeared from public view. Not until days later did China confirm that he had been arrested at home on suspicion of taking bribes and inform Interpol that Mr Meng had resigned. It may be that the cop himself has been caught up in a political storm.
The Chinese government has released no more details of Mr Meng’s alleged crimes. But the way it has handled his arrest suggests that there may be more to it than a suspicion that he was involved in corruption. The Ministry of Public Security, for which Mr Meng still technically works as a vice minister, issued a statement on October 8th saying its Communist Party committee had held a pre-dawn meeting that day. Apart from condemning Mr Meng’s alleged graft, participants stressed the need for “absolute loyalty” (to the party, presumably) as well as “resolute support” for the country’s leader, Xi Jinping. It was agreed that attendees must “maintain a high level of conformity with the political stance, the political direction and the political principles of the party centre with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core.” Had Mr Meng erred in this respect, too?

It started off as the opium hub for the Brits into China after the first Opium War. When the Chinese tried to stop the opium trade a second time, the British started the second Opium War. A former governor general to Canada later led a battle in that second war, participated in the pillaging of the Old Summer Palace, and ordered its burning to the ground because the Chinese hesitated to sign a second opium deal.
The Brits were well acquainted with opium by the time the discovered the poppy fields near China.

c.3400 B.C.

The opium poppy is cultivated in lower Mesopotamia. The Sumerians refer to it as Hul Gil, the 'joy plant.' The Sumerians would soon pass along the plant and its euphoric effects to the Assyrians. The art of poppy-culling would continue from the Assyrians to the Babylonians who in turn would pass their knowledge onto the Egyptians.
c.1300 B.C.

In the capital city of Thebes, Egyptians begin cultivation of opium thebaicum, grown in their famous poppy fields. The opium trade flourishes during the reign of Thutmose IV, Akhenaton and King Tutankhamen. The trade route included the Phoenicians and Minoans who move the profitable item across the Mediterranean Sea into Greece, Carthage, and Europe.
c.1100 B.C.

On the island of Cyprus, the "Peoples of the Sea" craft surgical-quality culling knives to harvest opium, which they would cultivate, trade and smoke before the fall of Troy.
c. 460 B.C.

Hippocrates, "the father of medicine", dismisses the magical attributes of opium but acknowledges its usefulness as a narcotic and styptic in treating internal diseases, diseases of women and epidemics.
330 B.C.

Alexander the Great introduces opium to the people of Persia and India.
A.D. 400

Opium thebaicum, from the Egytpian fields at Thebes, is first introduced to China by Arab traders.
1300's

Opium disappears for two hundred years from European historical record. Opium had become a taboo subject for those in circles of learning during the Holy Inquisition. In the eyes of the Inquisition, anything from the East was linked to the Devil.
1500

The Portugese, while trading along the East China Sea, initiate the smoking ofopium. The effects were instantaneous as they discovered but it was a practice the Chinese considered barbaric and subversive.

China already knew the drug was addictive, the Brits bringing it in by the ship load was similar to giving infected blankets to the Indians in NA and the Blacks in South Africa.

And then we wonder how the Communist Party could have attracted so much support. We created that party however much we may want to deny it. Had it not been for the opium wars, China would probably have evolved into a prosperous constitutional monarchy today.
The 2 WW's and the sanctions in the last century replace the damage creating addicts did. It is a good primer of what happens everyplace the Brits move into. A sharp sort with little to zero morals. The Brits called their wars and the Jewish Banks financed them. After the English Stock Market crash of 1815 it was the Banks that were telling the Brits which wars to fight and which places needed colonies. Bringing as many European diseases along as possible turned out to be pretty effective 'first shot' in the the places they wanted all for themselves. The Brits did the rest of the killing and then forts with business men took over the conquest after that, again it was recorded enough times that there is a pattern to how it works. I/m wor5king on that but it is for a different thread.

Canada moves to block foreign steel

The Canadian government says it will impose a 25 per cent surtax on some foreign steel products in a bid to head off dumping.
The Finance Department said "excessive imports" are harming the steel industry, prompting it to impose a surtax on seven products that range from rebar to wire rods.
The surtax, which begins Oct. 25, will be in place for 200 days, pending an inquiry by the Canadian International Trade Tribunal into whether longer-lasting safeguards are necessary, the government said.
The announcement comes more than three months after Canada imposed tariffs on $16.6 billion worth of American goods in retaliation for hefty U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
The government also announced Thursday that some Canadian manufacturers can now import those products from the U.S. without paying the surtaxes that have applied since July 1. A portion of the relief will be temporary, offered until Canadian producers are able to adequately meet domestic demand.
The exemption applies on a case-by-case basis to companies that applied for it, and pertains to American steel, aluminum and certain other products.
The products affected by the fresh tariffs go into structures from condominiums to dams and bridges, "which encompasses a heck of a lot of steel," said Jesse Goldman, a lawyer representing the Canadian Coalition for Construction Steel.
He said the surtax puts the construction steel industry in "a very dire position" because of Canada's limited domestic steel supply.
"Because of the actual quota amounts for this type of steel from non-U.S. sources, U.S. steel is going to come into Canada at record high prices. They will simply pass on the 25 per cent retaliatory tariffs to their Canadian customers."
The surtax on steel plates and other products could "jeopardize" mega-projects in Newfoundland, which relies almost exclusively on foreign steel, primarily from Europe, Goldman said.
A lot of imported structural steel has been put toward the refurbishment of the Parliament buildings, he added. "It's more ironic than intentional, but it gives you an example of the importance of imported steel in Canada."
The country's geography deters West Coast buyers from purchasing from central Canadian mills. It costs more than four times extra to ship a tonne of steel to Vancouver from Ontario than it does from China or Korea, said Richard Lyall, president of the Residential Construction Council of Ontario.
With rebar an essential component in residential towers, the new steel tariff could boost the price of new condos in Vancouver by up to $10,000 per unit, Lyall said.
"Housing affordability got thrown under the bus on this one," he said.
Finance Minister Bill Morneau is slated to address the Commons international trade committee Tuesday on its study of how tariffs are impacting Canadian businesses and workers.

Forcing the East coast and the West coast to buy steel from Central Canada just like Gyprock, National security? Lol

Forcing central Canada to buy forest products from BC, natural gas from Alberta and grain from Saskatchewan is our national duty.

You get a lot of wood locally and from Maine, only gas available for decades was from the West, now most of your gas comes through Spectra lines from the States, the only grain from the Prairies is what can't be grown locally. But you already knew that

The problem with a free trade agreement with Mexico is the vast difference in standard of living. Now if government employees were prepared to take a 90% cut in wages and zero bennies we might be able to level the playing field a bit. Probably have to cut pensions at least in half.Bring in a few million TFWs while we new at it to force wages downward. Yeah that should be good for the country.

I'm good with scraping taxpayer subsidies for all media. ANd supply management farming.

All of the wood that I see in our stores is from BC, Ontario, Quebec but not Maine. Besides, the American stuff would be too expensive because of the tariffs. I'm trying to remember where in Ontario and Quebec we have rolling fields of wheat and Canola. I'm sure that they are here and there but mostly we see corn and soy planted around here.

Our gas comes from the Inter Provincial Pipeline, mostly. A small bit of it is produced locally.

Where to you live, Twin? Not around here, apparently.

Some (cough, Coldstream, cought) think we need a 'dirigiste' government that will make us buy oranges from Nunavut too.

It isn't like they are short on NG to warm the green houses, sell the produce to buy the parts needed to turn the top of Baffin Island into an R&D facility for things that need absolute zero as a working temp so a mag/lev rail is how things are launched into space so the Van Allen belt is by-passed. We would have to sell it before that level of development would be allowed on something that can do launches at the rate ofr 1/hour 24/7 and park them in orbit past the belt where it they are not in danger of a collision.

The only hope Canad has is if the US annexes the lowest 300 miles of Canad as a 'buffer zone' between them and somebody that would have the nerve to suggest free trade with Cuba

Yes, Hong Kong is a part of China, but an autonomous part with its government. That is another reason to trade with Hong Kong before the fifty years is up.

At present, Hong Kong's Basic Law (essentially its mini-constitution) entrenches the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. That is threatened once the fifty years are up. At present, Hong Kong can negotiate its own trade agreements. Canada could unilaterally adopt an act granting unilateral free trade with Hong Kong on the condition that Hong Kong continue to respect the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. While it might seem hypocritical on the surface given how the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms itself violates that Covenant with its separate schools, a simple solution would be for this act to not expect reciprocity until Canada meet the sane standard (which would be a mostly symbolic clause given how Hong Kong already imports freely from Canada as it is to its own benefit).

If Canada truly cares about promoting human rights abroad, that's one practical step Canada could take.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hong Kong and Singapore are AUTONOMOUS from China in the same way that Nazi occupied Poland was autonomous from Berlin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
