China retaliates with tariffs on additional $60 billion in U.S. imports after Trump administration expands showdown with Beijing

The Chinese response came after President Trump went ahead with 10 percent tariffs on a range of Chinese products, including consumer goods. Chinese officials pledged to fire back with 5 and 10 percent duties on $60 billion in U.S. imports.

They are insisting on it from Canada, Trudeau desperately wants a trade agreement with China, I want our crude to tide water more than China to sell to in the Pacific. We need one to the East Coast as well.

We currently have all of our eggs in the USA basket and clearly it no longer works to our favour. The US is becoming too capricious and unstable and if they are our only significant trade partner, we go down the drain hand-in-hand with them.

not really.

we did not go down the drain with them in 2008 because we were insulated behind a well run banking system

We should have been "diversifying" for some time. now. We have allowed ourselves to become too complacent and dependant on the US.........and now with a protectionist and erratic USA.........that is not to our advantage..and might be a vulnerability.

The US is on the edge of oil independence and
they're Canada's only real current customer at
this point....and they already get a HUGE discount
against the world price for Canadian oil.

What price will the US be willing to pay for our oil
when they really don't need it? I'm betting on about
half of nothing or something close to that.

The calculation of American "energy independence" includes Canadian oil as "domestic". They see it as their's. You have to wonder to what ends they will go to keep it as "their's"

With the improving technology, that big find in Texas a couple years back that it doesn't seem has really been touched since the Saudi's dumped the price of oil a few years back by opening up the taps, and the Bakken play....the US won't need to include Canadian Oil as "domestic" in the near future. Then what?

You and your company are free to trade with whomever you want . Why should other companies not be afforded the same ?

If there is even a hint to be Oil self sufficient in the near future Trump would have threatened tariffs on cheap Canadian Oil as leverage, or even threaten the cancellation of XL as a bargaining chip. None of which has happened it let's you know how dependent they are on Canadian Oil.

Yeah, Trump needs to watch himself - he's such a bloody egotist that he can't see that China is unlike no other and won't be bullied. He considers himself to be a good negotiator but I doubt the Chinese see him that way and are bullies like he is. It's going to be interesting (to say the least) to see where all this goes and I certainly hope it's not where some have suggested here. Isn't there someone who has some influence over the President or is he simply too stupid to take advice from others. Never mind, don't answer that ……

What has led to China's stock market crash?
Panic selling in markets across Asia has sent global shares tumbling, with China's main index down nine per cent.

China is the world's second largest economy and recent slowdowns in manufacturing and commodities - coupled with a weaker dollar - are behind the falls.

Trump’s Trade Threats Hit China’s Stock Market and Currency

SHANGHAI — Months of struggling with economic problems at home and bickering with President Trump over trade are starting to take their toll on China’s financial health.

China’s stock market has now fallen close to levels not seen since a crash shocked global investors three years ago. An elite Chinese think tank affiliated with the government warned this week that the chances of a financial panic had risen significantly, shaking markets even more.

Some people are too un knowing of what the actual facts are to have valid opinions.
